This month's President's Challenge has given me an excuse to get back to a project that has been sitting on the shelf for several months. Although scoops and spoons can be fun and useful to make, the idea in this project is to make a scoop that has the accurate volume of a measuring spoon to make it even more useful in the kitchen. With Thanksgiving just around the corner, perhaps this is even an apropo gift and token of appreciation for the chef tasked with preparing your Thanksgiving Dinner.
Although I have only made an (American) tablespoon so far, I have calculated some other sizes:
Tablespoon: 1/2" spacer; 2" rough cylinder; 1-7/8" bowl diameter
Teaspoon: 1/4" spacer; 1-3/8" rough cylinder; 1-5/16" bowl diameter
And for my friends on the other side of the pond:
15ml: 12mm spacer, 51mm rough cylinder; 48mm bowl diameter
5ml: 6.5mm spacer, 36mm rough cylinder; 34mm bowl diameter
Tools:
1/2" spindle gouge
1/4" spindle gouge
1/8" (bedan) parting tool
1" skew
1" skewed negative rake scraper
Woods:
Hard Maple (spoons)
MDF (spacer)
Baltic Birch Plywood (collet jig)
