March 16th 1984.
The signing of the Nkomati Accord, a non-aggression pact between Mozambique and South Africa. The "Agreement on Non-Aggression and Good Neighbourliness between Mozambique and South Africa" was signed by President Samora Machel of Mozambique and Prime Minister P.W. Botha of South Africa.
The focus of the pact was a bargain in which Mozambique would withdraw support from the military wing of the African National Congress (ANC), in return for which South Africa would stop supporting RENAMO, and anti-FRELIMO guerrilla organisation.
While Mozambique stuck to its side of the agreement, South Africa continued its covert support for RENAMO.
The Mozambique civil war finally ended in 1992 via the the Rome General Peace Accords.
