I think that both Fabiano and Magnus represent chess well. As an American, I would love to see Fabi go on the talk shows and raise public awareness of chess. Interest in chess is growing fast and a champion or even a charismatic well known runner up would inspire many players in the USA. I don’t know how well Fabi matches up against Magnus, but I was very impressed with his ability to finish strong at the end and come back from a tough loss.

FIDE (or world chess) really need to replace the press officer. How can such a valuable time with the players is wasted with such a horrible format and questions? Fabiano just won the most important tournament of his careers and the press officer's first question is about the world championship match?? Come on. Let the winner enjoy and talk about the moment!. A good press officer steps up with good (well-prepared) questions of his/her own. This press conference was completely improvised, non-informative, etc. What a waste of time.

Kramnik used to be a very aggressive player when young. His style evolved a lot during the years. Saying that no one imagined Kramnik could play exciting chess actually means "no one not knowing Kramnik". That being said, I really didn't expect that much fighting spirit, there was even too much, unfortunately for him. Like some kind of lack of lucidity in some moments (thatgame against fabi?). But he created great games throughout the tournament and never stopped going for it, he likely is the player I enjoyed the most following during this event.

Can't wait. It will be an interesting match however, I really don't like the WC process. I would prefer an annual series of competitions involving ALL top players. Roger Federer doesn't just play a final match against a challenger that has to earn the right. Maybe the top 64 players by rating divides into eight eight-person double round robins. Eight winners would compete in a final double round robin. IMHO the old inter-zonal tournaments and 6-game matches of the 60s and 70s was better but include the current champ like other sports.

Fabi will win if he transitions into endgames and convert. Fabi has a eye for seeing drawn and winning endgames. I like his chances seeing as most of his wins against carlsen are 40+ moves.
@JohnSutcliffe1988
6 жыл бұрын
You think Caruana is better than Carlsen at endgames? Endgame play is Carlsen's strongest asset, he usually plays them almost like an engine. Caruana does have a very nice win in the Berlin against Carlsen. But that was a really weird exception. And many chess games between top players last 40+ moves on account of the fact that they don't typically just get mated or blunder heavily in the middle-game. I think Fabiano has better chances in sharp middlegames, which typically would involve transitioning into winning endgames. But hard to believe he could outplay Magnus in equal endgames.

Itachi3040 that makes no difference. If he is an American citizen, he is representing America. Simple as that. Just like Boris Gelfand is from Belarus, USSR but is an Israeli Grandmaster now. Just like Kasparov started representing Croatia in 2014.
@CGoody564
6 жыл бұрын
Djudju x technically speaking, that was the FIDE World Chess Championship, and not the (now undisputed) World Chess Championship, as the titles were split at that time thanks to Kasparov. The title that Kamsky challenged for was not the same title that Fischer challenge for and won, nor is it the same title that is active now. So in a sense, Bobby was in fact that last American to challenge for the World Chess Championship.
@knighterrant5772

Right, and I don't think that's just a technicality. In my eyes, that was *not* the world championship of chess. The two top players -- Short and Kasparov -- played their own championship. FIDE was a joke.
