Many don't realise that PIK was the transatlantic hub .My grandparents would come across from Toronto in the 60's and 70's and I remember just how busy it was.Even from this video, watching the HS748 , you get an idea how loud those Rolls Royce Darts were. I have tinnitus now, in part because of them.

Wonderful to see that Worldways DC8 which I flew to Toronto in in 1982 brings back great memories, used to spend a lot of time at Prestwick in the '80s. My favourite aircraft at the time was an Air Canada DC8 62 stretched which was noisy , smokey and brill!!!! Thanks for posting

If this is the day I think it is, I was at PIK with my sister and parents as guests of Flying Tigers. We were taken on board the 747 for drinks and a look around the plane when Concorde landed carrying the golfers taking part in the open championship. Remember it well. Thanks for the blast from the past.

I grew up near Prestwick airport. Remember seeing the FAA's Lockheed Jetstar (reg N1), an L1049 Super Constellation and loving watching/listening to F-104s training. God I'm old.

Love the sound of the 748.... Fantastic memories. My dad would take us to Turnhouse every other weekend, if not, we drove down to PIK for a wee change. Great days... (RIP Dad)

AVRO 748's, the RAF flew a number of these, their 'civvy' name was ANDOVERS,finally ended up being used for carrying Royal Mail around UK. They did have a Door Problem and at least two crashed as the reult of a door opening in flight. They were in competition with the twin engined F27 and of course the Handley Page Heralds.

The MILITARY name was Andover. The 748 was originally an Avro design but was later rebadged as the Hawker Siddeley HS748 and ultimately the BAe 748.

HS748. The Andover was the military variety in 2 types, with or without parachute ramp tail.

Concorde flew to Newcastle in the 80's too after the 737 was briefly grounded being utilised on the Heathrow shuttle. Needless to say all the tickets sold out instantly!

Hi John, first I'd like to say that I really enjoy your aviation collection showing past operations at Northern UK Airports! Thank god, someone was documenting civil aviation ops with film instead of boring photos (I was also a photo shooter until I got smart and realized that loved commercal aviation and wanted to preserve it as close to memory as possible = video). But I must ask this question...why (I'm also asking another shooter from northern UK) ..why did none of you manage to capture any of the CP Air Canadian Pacific Empress 747s? They were unquestionably the most colorful jumbos of their day - aside from Gatwick served-Braniff International! It seems no one bother or even cared! Just wondering..your thoughts on this issue?

Hi there, I’d have loved to have filmed them, they were my favourites when going to pik back then, think they must have gone bust by the time I started filming, that’s the only reason I can think of🤔

@@johnstewart5363 ah! Happened on this end too! To have had today’s support systems back then…luckily, CG graphics are improving rapidly, it won’t be long before the very images can be re-created down to the rivets.
