Hello, is it possible to restrict file types for home drives? I have a file server and I want to restrict *.cmd and *.exe file types in my home drives. The problem is I can't find the home drive when browsing it in file resource manager as it is not a shared folder. Each user of my server has their own home drive so I'm not really sure whether file resource manager is the suitable way to restrict file types in my home drive.

Hi Eli, thank you for these wonderful class videos. It has been a great resource for me in my learning windows server. Is it also possible if you can add exchange server on the topic or on the lab? I want to learn it from you thanks!

Then it will be saved. Unfortunately this only checks the file extension... (The ".mp3" file I used in the demo was actually a .txt file that I changed the extension of)

Wouldn't you just be able to save the file with a modified suffix and then the folks who want it just access it, rename the file suffix for running it, and then run it?

What happens if you implement this filter on a share that is already in use, and where users have already saved .mp3 files etc.

in my test environment, i came to find out that placing that audio file in a new folder, then copy the folder into the "file screened" folder can bypass this security feature,,, Microsoft should come wit a "write scan" to scan a folder being saved onto a shared file with file screens applied

So, this works by file extensions only though, right? If I change the file extension, Windows can't figure that out (like Linux or Mac OSX can based on file signature header, right)? Never mind. Just got to that part of the video. :)

hi i have a problem at one of my client place i work as a IT guy in some company i have recently supplied a new HP Ml 10 server to my client with windows server 2012 standard edition OS installed on that server i have created domain added few systems to domain in that office they have like 6 to 7 computers including laptop on one server i am now facing strange problem like some times all word or excel file opens in read only mode on server where files are stored but then i have removed sharing permissions for whole drive in which routine work data was stored and then given sharing to particular folder full access after that word or excel files saving very slow a long saving bar pops up and stays upto 1 to 2 minutes and save files. this problem was also there before adding any client to server. please help me in this as its a new server with genuine OS and i get to see this problem i have tried both sharing methods like sharing with advanced sharing option and even added it into security section full access i have no restrictions for Quota cause they dont need that stuff. even folder which they access is not restricted it should be accessable by EVERYONE in network. even turned off firewall in all PC's. please help me eli on this or any other geek out there. i am just a newbie in this.

Thanks for the info DasBeatz. But as an IT and PC Repair student, I was really curious to find out, if there was another way to solve this problem, besides Reflowing and Reballing. I think I'll take your advice and "hopefully," get another motherboard. Hopefully that new motherboards GPU, doesn't "konk," out on me again though. Lol!

Does this only work for shares on that server - or can it work for any share on the network like on a NAS?

If it's the integrated GPU, you might as well take it to a professional or just replace the motherboard.

Hello, Eli! First of all, thank you very much for the video instructions and I hope you're alright. I don't expect you to know this, but I have a question regarding a much bigger problem that I have encountered in real life. A time ago, my company was "hit" by a ransomware which renamed all the files in a shared directory/folder to "filename.ransomeware.extension". Fortunately we managed to roll back the files as we have backups running every night. Basically what happened was that a user with read/write rights to the shared folder, managed to get infected with the ransomware by clicking on a disguised "zip-file" sent by malicious senders per e-mail, opened it and thus infecting the mentioned location (shared folder). Now my question is... If I do create a "file group" to filter common ransomware extensions, will the "File Screening Management" be able to prevent the renaming from happening or prevent the file-hijacking from happening to the shared folder again? BR & HNY! :-) DC.

So what to do to prevent a user with (R/W permission and pc administrator) accidentally opens a potential email that contains a script to encrypt all the files from his pc and the shared folder?

Hi..I just implemented File Screening Management on server 2008 R2 on a shared folder. I've restricted the users from putting all files excluding word files. But i recently released that the word files in that shared folder can not be saved if its been edited. Why??

Luis Ohene Darko I believe what is happening here is microsoft office creates a temporary file when you edit a file, and you haven't added that to the list of "accepted files" I believe it maybe a *.docx file type (was just quick google search)

When I think hacking; I don't think saving music files to the network. I'm more concerned with people accessing or trying to transmit proprietary information. How about a video going over the different types of misconduct you experienced? Comparing music savers, vs other kinds of misconduct?

Hi Mr. Elithecomputerguy. Great tut. But Could you do a Vid tutorial, on How to Fix Laptop GPU chips, that are not working. Alot of Laptops have been going through this problem, for the past 6 or 7 years. Sadly my Laptop is going through this too. Nothing is appearing on the screen. The battery light and back screen LED lights are on, except for the Hard drive light. The Hard drive and everything else is working though. And is there any other method beside, reflowing and reballing.
