Another correction: 2024 has been the worst Novak's since 2017 - not 2006 or 2007 (2007 was very good, by the way, 2 masters titles and USO final by 20 years old). After Wimbledon run this year there's no doubt 2024 is already much better than 2017.

Regarding potential retirement, we need to listen closely to what Nadal has actually said.. He is very happy with his level in practice, but he has just not brought that level fully to match play, and this explains his recent results. This suggests that he believes that his practice level is good enough to win at his own standard, and that bringing this full level to his matches is only a matter of time, nerve, etc. Given that, why would he even consider retirement at this point? He is moving very well. He seems very fit. He learned how to win points more quickly (to address the fatigue issue) years ago. He had the requisite match level in his first tournament in 2024. He has to believe that he still has it in him to be high level Rafa Nadal. IMHO the only thing that would make him think of retiring is if he comes to believe that he has lost the will or the nerve (something mental), so that he just cannot play any longer at his highest level in matches. And that seems to go so strongly against his mental and emotional and competitive makeup that one match early in his latest comeback won't make the slightest bit of difference. If he loses, even badly, that will mean, to him, only that he still is not yet match tough and able to bring his best level in match play. It is an open question whether, having lost his natural ability to fully translate practice level to match play, which was never previously a question for him, it can ever be regained. But it will take much more than one match to convince him of that.

I fear you have become delusional. Nadal went to Sweden to play a clay court to a tournament he’d not played in 19 years. Were he not terribly hobbled there is no way he’d ever step a foot in that town of Bastad. Borg’s kid gave him a good battle…Borg’s kid is ranked like 579.

@@kjtarr1788 perhaps its not so much delusion as it might be a hope that he will continue. Based on yesterday's match - fitness is lacking I observe. That does not mean that he cannot get it back. match play and practise are always different. arguably Djokovic did not have a tough draw in Wimbledon this year. this served as a major disadvantage in the end. still I have the feeling that Djokovic is fitter than Nadal at this stage. Nadal lacking strength translates into half court balls we have seen yesterday. Djokovic wont leave those unpunished. in any case Nadal has shown enormous comebacks in the past. Loosing this match is honestly a wake up call for whoever losses (if its a blowout anyway). Both players are not close to where they were in their prime (Novak is in better form obviously but still nowhere near) and loosing to your longtime rival, who is way out of his prime, kinda gives you the idea that you are even further away from prime. The only way I see a looser not feeling too bad after this match is if they play an amazing match on both sides and Novak wins. I think Rafa would be ok with that and see it as progress after coming back, although it would shatter his last chance to equal h2h. As a Nole fan i hope he wins in whatever way, as a tennis fan I hope we get a crazy good quality 3 setter.

Good analysis, well done. My personal opinion is that Rafa's deteriorated movement has affected everything. It's much harder for him to shift tactics, especially on defense, which has put way more pressure on his offensive game. The equilibrium is just not there anymore. I somewhat agree with you. He played really well today on the first set, and that high level could even lift him to win a set against Novak. But he doesn’t have the legs and physical stamina anymore to sustain that level. On top of that, Nadal comes into this match with less than a day of rest, and coming from back to back intense matches, vs Djokovic who is just focusing on the singles and is well rested with an extra day of rest and after a practice match against a doubles player. I agree that Djokovic is the favourite. My glimmer of hope for Rafa is that he's generally improving, whereas Novak is generally declining (from a very high level). It seems like Rafa is physically ok but patchy in matches compared to his practice sessions. Novak losing a step is everything to his game. Rafa has probably lost way more speed but he still has his weapons. I totally agree that Rafa has struggled mentally and not become clutch again. He definitely has a mental block against Novak outside clay. Tactically, I think Novak wins those Ad court cross-court exchanges when Rafa over protects against the DTL back-hand and leaves a gap on his forehead side. Interested to see how much net play will be on show. Good luck to both. I hope it's competitive.

Good comments and analysis Gil Look, this is simple I would liken this to a car race where both cars start out with a full tank of gas and both will be quick and sharp; for about an hour to an hour an a half because Rafa has a hole in his tank! Novak is rested and relatively healthy. Rafa is not. Could Rafa make the first set competitive and even win? Sure. It’s clay. It’s on his home court and he is the king of clay. At the end of the day, there is nobody in history who has been better than exacting a physical toll on the body than Novak because he is so good at pushing his opponents side to side and deep over and over again. Will Novak be nervous? Yes, an Olympic Gold is on the line but I would expect him to be more focused and dialed in more than he has been the entire year.

After the match, Nole's atrocious form in the 2nd set is already an alarm to him. Dropping two breaks in a row, serving under 50% first serve, playing some of the worst shots in terms of selection and managing to barely edge it out with a break is big sign that he is far from his best. With this form and current state of the game, he's already not a favourite against Zverev, Alcaraz will wipe him out as in Wimbledon. He really needs to take a big rest after the Olympics, not sure if he should even play US Open since he already didn't want to skip grass season. Recover the knee fully, gain confidence in your movement and then try to get ready for the next season. He is moving alright, but still slower it seems then it was before the injury (may it be age or the injury), which is noticeable against the current top players in Sinner and Alcaraz. But let's be real, he will play USO, try to qualify for the ATP finals and we'll see if he can recover his body and mindset in this period.

Those who give big edge to Novak are naive in my opinion. Nadal can't stand Novak nor the fact that he holds all those records over him. He is gonna play his best match of the year and give everyhing he's got to make h2h even and stop Novak from winnig the only trophy he is missing. I sincerely hope Novak won't have one of his slow, unfocused starts, and manages his nerves better than at W finale.

Give people something to play at Olympics 😂😂😂 What? How about get a local singles playe ( i am sure plenty live around Paris) who will probably gladly sit and wait for a chance ro play, especially if they are young. There's solution. This isn't a slam....nonpay, the privilege is just getting to say you had or almost had a chance to play to your kids or grandkids some day 😊

@@GillGross Please, i just counted 36 French players on the atp site ranked 100 to 400 (meaning not including top 100) for singles. I am sure some of them are from Paris. They probably could have played singles better than Ebden. I just don't see why someone needs to incentivize players to have a chance to play at the Olympics. That's why for a long time people felt it should be for the very young, and not pros that are spoiled by earnings elsewhere.

@@joannemoore3976 My bigger point, to the extent there is one, is that sports are unique in entertainment because their outcomes are in doubt, and the greater the doubt, the more hype is warranted. Sure, Rafa and Nole are legendary players, but this was never shaping up to be a legendary match. After this match, I’m not sure how many people in the crowd are going to enthusiastically say “I was there.”
