This stunning meditation, originally written for organ, has been gaining popularity recently as more attention is paid to issues of racial equity in music programming. Florence Price (1887-1953) was a barrier-breaking composer, pianist, organist, arranger, and teacher, whose career saw frequent collaboration with other pioneering Black musicians such as Marian Anderson and Margaret Bonds. She is primarily known for her symphonic writing, and has the distinction of being the first female African American composer to have a work premiered by a major American orchestra (her E minor Symphony, by the CSO). Price also made significant contributions to the piano and organ repertories.
This is an at-sight arrangement of the original organ score.
