+Steve Kovacs The producers would never try to bring this game out of retirement; to the best of my knowledge, this was the only time a contestant and home viewer shared the full $15,000, but other than that, I don't know of any other contestant and home viewer who shared more than $12,000. The defunct Game Show Central site had a picture of a $12,200 win from one of the final times the game was played, but again, to the best of my knowledge, this was the *ONLY* time a contestant and home viewer split the full maximum amount ($15,000). Another reason why they would never try to bring it back is because of the low win percentage it had during the game's original run (1983-88).
@EricEbac22

+Steve Kovacs Actually, I think you may be right about that. The game, just like several other retired games (Super Ball, On the Spot, Penny Ante, et al), took too long to play, and as I mentioned, I believe this playing of Phone Home Game on June 30, 1988, was the *only* time a contestant and home viewer split the full $15,000.

You said earlier that Barker never had a game retired. Now you say he did. At 20 years of age, I dont think you know any more than anyone else. I remember that mistake and Barker had it retired for that reason. However, the excuse given was mechanical failure - not Barker failure. There was nothing wrong with that game and there would be nothing wrong with it if it were returned out of "retirement." Barker is the only one who should stay "retired.

This was a celebation of his 50 year career. There was no need to have pricing games or showcase. Normally, there would be clips of that career with people who shared those years with him. Namely, the living members of TPIR family, but most of them were discarded - Janice & Anita who started with him; Holly, Kathleen, and some of the other models from the years. But no, Barker made sure he got rid of all of them, so he could say he was the last one remaining from day one.

I don't think it was Bob's decision to begin with unlike banning fur products and offering export cars. Besides not all games were retired because Bob disliked them; in fact, none were because Bob disliked them. FYI: Finish Line debuted February 21, 1978 and Cliff Hangers debuted April 12, 1976; therefore, Finish Line wasn't retooled to become Cliff Hangers, since it debuted after Cliff Hangers. Also, I like Pick a Number. It's a quick but enjoyable game to watch, unlike Double Prices.

You are right about the dates for Cliff and Finish line, however games were routinely retired because Barker disliked them. If someone is telling you otherwise, they are covering up for Barker. He disliked Super Saver supposidly because of electronic failure. This was the 20th century and you telling me they couldn't get the game to operate properly? Bull. Barker just got tired of some games or felt they weren't fun enough for HIM. It was all about HIS ego the last decade.
@EricEbac22

Unfortunately, twotonedearly, after the end of season 16, the show's producers decided they would retire Phone Home Game, because rarely, if ever, did anyone win much money playing the game. In fact, this particular playing was the *ONLY* time a contestant and home viewer shared the full maximum amount a team could win ($15,000). There were a few who won about $12,000, maybe $13,000 tops, but again, this was the only time a contestant and home viewer shared the full $15,000. Also, the game took too long to play, plus, there's no way, even if it was brought back, the producers could find any other medium, aside from a home phone, to make it work. There's no way it would work on a cell phone, much less Skype or any other video calling website.

I didn't say Bob never had a game retired; I said Bob never retired a game because he disliked it. It is a common misconception that mechanical problems doomed $uper $aver (just like it is a common misconception the end of the show is called the Showcase Showdown or that Money Game & Give or Keep debuted on the same day or that Grand Game was won on its 1st playing or that the name of the cash game with the hole punching is or was at one point officially called Punchboard).

TPIR wouldn't be the same without its basic concept of pricing game & Showcases; there should be no reason for there to be a show without them. The reason Janice, Holly, and Kathleen (to name a few) weren't there was because they hated Bob and were fired by him (directly or indirectly). Even if they were asked back, I doubt they would come. Any guest stars would not be ones that hate Bob. (Also, the model's name is Anitra.) You said you were a member of Golden Road. What is your username?
@mitmfan
16 жыл бұрын
I will agree with you that Bob's ego got in the way during his last several years. However, it was NOT mechanical problems that doomed $uper $aver. Bob made a mistake explaining the rules. He forgot to say it was still mathematically possible to win the game if a contestant picked the marked-up item. A woman picked it, thought she lost, and put no effort into winning the game. She told Standard & Practices about it, and they decided to award her the prize.

I don't think the Play Along feature from c. 1986-88 applied to the SHowcases. It would appear in various pricing games and in the SCSD. If it appeared in the SCSD, they had three postcards drawn. If someone spun $1K, the name at the top of the stack of cards won $1K and whatever the in-studio contestant won in the bonus spin. They then read the second card in the stack. If the first two contestants won $1K, they read the third card.

Perhaps now that Barker no longer has a say in what happens, the "tradition" of not bringing games out of retirement because Barker grew to dislike them, will also be discontinued. Phone Home was great, as was Super Saver, Split Decision, and Penny Ante. Bonkers and Pick A Number are awful. Finish Line was a good game that was never really given a chance.
