Like baseboard trim, never price by the foot always price by the cut… •For instance a 12’x12’ room has just as many cuts as a 2’x6’ closet with the same amount of measuring. •$8 per cut is fair… That’s 2 cuts per corner and 2 cuts per door or cased opening per side. •So a 12’x12’ room with a bumped out 2’x6’ closet would be 10 corners with 3 door openings (count closet twice, inside & outside) for a total of 13x2 cuts per each =26x$8 per cut= $208 labor •If adding shoe moulding double it.

Make hay while the sun shines brother! Who knows how far this economy will tank. Nothing wrong with cabinet stuff so keep at it. I've got content for a small cabinet build that I may do a video on. Cheers, Scott

@@scottearlsmithFTC I don’t do full kitchens in Calif our work comp laws mandate full coverage and you need a small loan ( thousands of dollars for a part time worker) . So I work alone until I partner with another sub contractor or GC ? I am really stacked some customers hv waited over a year? But it’s custom cabinetry like credenzas counter top ext , pullouts. I finally wised up and will outsource the big stuff add 20% for me sometimes more if difficult to get done. The rest I do ! So far it’s slow cabinets are very difficult once you start making big cabinets !! It’s fine for now! I hv my own stairs to re-do eventually involves railings, steps, risers, Newell posts ! Got it all !

@@zephyr1408 California sounds similar to Ontario. So many rules and expenditures for contractors. Makes things so complicated. Good luck, Scott

Great info Scott. Coming from an automotive background where everything is broken into tenths or hundredths of an hour increments and the time studies have already been done, transitioning into my new trade I started tracking the time it took me to do even the smallest task and loading that into a spreadsheet. Over time you build a deep reference library to at least have a base to start. Nice to see you also add travel and material time. Sometimes customers or business owners don't stop to think at it's core what they are buying/selling is your time + your accumulated skill set. Take care.

Thank you for this Jay! Your spreadsheet idea is something I should have done. That is such a wise thing to do. I bet it's really handy when you do a task that you haven't done in a while, or have only done once before. Cheers, Scott
