Honoring Pete Buttigieg
As a child of two college professors, Buttigieg is a graduate of Harvard and an Oxford Rhodes Scholar. During his time in college, he became active in politics, working for a consulting firm that worked on John Kerry’s presidential campaign, later volunteering on Barack Obama’s campaign as well.
In 2012, he successfully won the mayoral election in his hometown of South Bend, Indiana, making him the youngest mayor to ever serve a city of over 100,000 people.
A U.S. Navy Reserve Officer, Buttigieg was deployed to Afghanistan for a time while he held office as Mayor. His experiences overseas helped him decide to be true to himself and come out as a gay man in 2015.
After announcing his Presidential bid in 2019, he would be the first ever openly gay candidate of a major party to receive delegates in a primary election. This would gain him national political attention. In 2021, President Biden appointed him as Secretary of Transportation, making Buttigieg the first openly gay cabinet member.
During his time in charge of the Department of Transportation, his priorities have been rebuilding infrastructure across the U.S. and seeking racial equity in commissioned projects as well.
