Except for the English accent, that makes Gaudete sound like Gaurethe to my Romance ears, it's fine. In a proper Romance/Mediterranean pronunciation, T is not as aspirated as in German and English, and D is dental. It should sound more like this: kzitem.info/news/bejne/wIuFxayFnWmXoWk
@joukoniemi9250
2 жыл бұрын
@@luizfelipe5399 It should not sound like that. Latin was like English today and it was pronounced in many ways depending when, where and for what purpose it was used. This is the originel Finnish way for Piae Cantiones (pronounce "cantiones", not canziones): kzitem.info/news/bejne/omebnqGFpWeKqIY

@@joukoniemi9250 I did not know it was Finnish. So you're right about hard G and T. However, I was responding the original comment, not yours. I was showing how it should be pronounced in modern Church Latin, not in the Finnish pronunciation. Hope you understand.

@UCI8bLUo7rz-TwkrkiiczKEw I ment the link you sent "It should sound more like this ..." Christmas songs from the USA and England have different English pronunciations. If you have an old song, maybe traditional instruments ang clothings, why not to use the original pronunciation. In the choirs I have song renaissance songs are song by the old Latin and more modern songs by modern Latin. Old Italian Latin has been different than German Latin and so on.

Actually, it's almost impossible to define how medieval music "really" sounded like... What you could have said is that is how YOU think it should sound... And yes, it's very nice, but maybe not the true medieval way to sing it...

There are a slew of versions of this song on KZitem, but I really love this one for how it cleaves to the raw simplicity and sincerity with which I must imagine the song was originally performed. These other versions have a huge range of inventive instrumental and even vocal embellishments, but to me, they too often veer into the theatrical and incohesive. This version proves my suspicion that by and large, any ornamentation of this beautiful song is really gilding the lily.

So LIVE, and the 'hang time' on that reverb! Fully agree. Pretty sure any group singing there would produce sounds they'd not heard before. We used to sing in a fairly live four floor large spiral staircase 'room' to do little 'pop up' mini concerts at church and it was very live, but junk compared to this acoustic environment.

There's always a different quality to the music when the singers believe the words coming out of their mouths. You all seem to have that. It's not strictly speaking part of the musical art, but it certainly comes out in a more beautiful sound. I know this was a few years ago, but this is one of the better performances of this piece that I'm hearing this Christmas(now epiphany)tide. Rage and scheme though the nations will, the scoffers still cannot mimic the beauty that comes only from above. Keep singing, for perhaps in those words they will hear and believe and share also in our Joy. Gaudete fideles! Christus vivit.

The piece is not medieval. So if they do use proper medieval harmony its not accurate, but fair dues to them for being so radical.

ANÚNA I looked it up and it said that, despite being compiled in written form in the 16th century, it probably originated from a Medieval monophonic chant.
@crystallise700

So, whether it was written in the exact medieval time period or not, it can't have been that radical or inaccurate to include it.
@anunachoir

You said that the Medieval bit was your favourite. Its not Medieval so therefore it is inaccurate. that doesn't diminish the quality of the singing .
