I received mine a couple weeks ago. It seems simple enough, but it’s a lot. The one thing I hate about these big crowdfunding campaigns is the amount of unnecessary waste that is produced. If they didn’t sell this with a ‘base game + expansions’ model, they could have consolidated all of the expansion boxes into one big box. All of the expansion campaign books could have been combined just to one, with better binding. There are duplicate crafting tables/cards for each element, because the updated tables accommodate the two new characters. All of the old tables are useless and go in the trash. I have a mountain of waste, duplicate content, and extra booklets (not consolidated) for no good reason.

Also, as unthinkable as this is, plenty of people dont go all-in because the "true waste" is the expansions you don't even play. I wish expansions wouldn't even come out for Kickstarting until after the base game was published, but that's a risk on a bad game getting bad reviews most of these studios aren't willing to take.

Primal is amazing. Art is beautiful. Gear progression and deck management feels satisfying. Miniatures are epic and well sculpted. Game mechanics are stellar. The game is not easy. The only knock is that the storytelling is well written but not as immersive as something like Oathsworn. Wish it had a forteller narration.

The rulebook introduces the game through an intro prologue and tells you exactly what you need to know. It gives you an good rudimentary understanding of the game without overwhelming with all the full rules. Also , a big chunk of the rulebook is setups for one shot adventures called expeditions. Overall, the first 30 or so pages is like 95% of the rules. The rest is glossary, expedition setups, full component list, and index.

I am very excited for this one, have been waiting it for a long time since usually Alex seems to enjoy the same games as me. Nonetheless I heard during the unboxing the typical sound of miniatures being hold by plastic tips, making it hard to store those when painted without damaging the base of the painted miniature. I was hopping them to use a similar insert making process as Destinies for exemple. With void shaped insert.

Im wondering if we can fit the board (or mat) and tokens in the card box and then fit some extra monsters into the core box to condense it some. Still waiting on the expansions to arrive to test that out. The issue with all the minis is those dang vacuum formed trays take up so much space
@protoman504
6 ай бұрын
We are going to need a video of when you take all the miniatures out of the plastic trays and throw them in a box loose so you can condense everything 😂. Honestly it scares me how you do that and others too. How many miniatures have you broken/had to glue back together because of it?
@Urek968
5 ай бұрын
I've never had any miniatures break throwing them all in a box. You just have to be careful not to but the game sideways or jostle it around harshly. I also paint miniatures but I have to add extra varnish to them so they don't scratch which is the worst part of having them all together. I like to sleeve my cards and a lot of games simply don't support that without throwing out inserts and bagging the components. I also only have so much space I can't keep all those boxes.

@noraptorshere8206

So, if you're running the campaign, it's not like KDM where you're fighting the same thing over and over again. After the first prologue fight, you're given a choice of 2-3 quests (depending on if you have the expansions) each of a different monster than the first. And then each chapter you finish, unlocks more, so you've always got multiple monsters to pick from. But also, yes. The monster behavior deck changes slightly as you level it up, but overall learning how to fight the monster most effectively is enjoyable by itself. Beyond that, the 4-6 (again, expansions) classes all play VERY differently, and different team compositions as well as character builds will require different strategies. Which monsters you've fought beforehand and which ones you didn't will even change things up, as the gear crafted from fighting any given monster can vastly alter your strategies with a given character (for example, the Fire-based Sword & Shield allows you to cancel monster effects, whereas the Lightning-based set wants you to take damage so you can charge up and unleash a big burst of damage back at the monster.) However, there's also the Expedition mode where you just pick a particular monster, pick a level, then build a deck appropriate for that level and fight it. Also fun for the above reasons with all the knobs on your character/team you can tweak between fights.

Unfortunately for me and my group Primal has been the biggest disappointment this year. We so really wanted to love it, waited anxiously for the boxes to arrive, we sleeved the mammoth and we got into it. The game balance is way off, the deck management is boring between campaigns, the forge is also a huge letdown. It just feels like you need to work a lot to play the game, the immersion is bad, you only move a bit, turn the monster, go back and forth, turn the monster... For us it missed the mark of just being "fun and amazing". It's a very beautiful game, components are very good although there are multiple printing mistakes we noticed while crafting higher level weapons. I'm so sad this came out to be such a bad and beautiful game. 😢

I'm three games into it and loving it. The game is actually an easy one to learn, but still with a learning curve as you drill into your head the reaction system. The rules are well laid out with lots of examples, so not that much and it contains one lots of one shot and glossary pages so not a lot for actual rules.
@ntmetroid

How grindy does it feel for gear upgrades? Thats always my biggest worry with campaign board games
@DumahAtreides
6 ай бұрын
@@ntmetroid I don't feel the point is the grind but testing yourself and builds against the various monsters. The 12 game campaign just gives you a number of upgrade choices between each fight. There's also one off and a 3 game campaign which can give you the firehose of build options instead. I would not say the strength of this game is the campaign itself. That's just a way to guide you through the content with a little story to read that sets the stage without interaction. The settlement phase is very slimmed compared to KDM to the point it's hardly there. The game is mostly about the gameplay of the battles and that's exactly what I wanted.
@noraptorshere8206
6 ай бұрын
@@ntmetroid Its not grindy at all. For an example, after clearing the Prologue, you get enough resources (no randomness) to make 2 pieces of Fire gear + craft 2 potions. This isn't a game where you are expected to battle the same monster over and over again in the campaign, but weave your way through a bunch of them, as there are multiple monsters of each element and that's the important bit in terms of what you can craft--there's no "parts" of specific monsters needed to craft gear except for their element. Bone/scales/whatever are all generic, so what monster you get them from doesn't matter. With gear + unlocked character cards, you'll be capable of tweaking how your character plays every fight if you want.
