Fractures and cracks on the primary sheave of a Yamaha Vino 125 Scooter. As seen through the v-belt air filter element housing.
Symptoms:
Transmission shuddering while accelerating from a standstill. It felt a bit like the clutch is 'catching' a second too late.
Potential cause:
In my unqualified noob opinion, I believe that a dirty v belt air filter element caused overheating of the primary sheave, which then caused the fractures you see.
I could not clean the air filter element because I had stripped a screw holding the plastic damper cover. I only recently was able to remove it by borrowing a friend's cordless driver and using Alden's Grabit Pro bits to remove the stripped screw.
Potential next steps
Replace the primary sheave. I'm concerned though because I don't know what I'll find inside- will there be heat damage to other components as well; belt, rollers, secondary sheave, clutch etc? The primary sheave is relatively inexpensive, costing about $30 at established online retailers. Costs will quickly mount if I have to replace other components.
I'm also not looking forward to draining the oil each time I need to remove the crankcase cover.
