Primitive cane arrows look great with self nocks. In this field tips episode, Clay Hayes shows you how to make self nocks for primitive cane or wood arrows using simple and enexpensive hand tools. For this arrow making all you'll need is a hacksaw, sand paper, and a small file or blade like the one Clay shows in the tutorial.
Cane shafts differ from wood shafts like dug fir or cedar in a few ways. Wood arrow shafts have grain orentation that has to be taken into consideration when placing the arrow nocks. Cane shafts like Tonkin or native river cane doesn't have growth rings like wood so the shaft can be oriented in any direction that gives you the spine you need.
These self nocks reinforced with sinew or thread will work well with any primitve bow, longbow or recurve. These are the type of nocks that native americans like Ishi used on their arrows. These are great skills to have for self reliance, survival, or bushcraft. Check out the other traditional and primitive archery videos on my channel.
