The AussieOffsider attempts to smelt copper in a crucible using coal and charcoal. Taking a year to put together the various elements (clay soil furnace, making charcoal, clay and claysoil crucibles, air supply solution) he finally has a crack at it. The end result is finding out he's not getting the temperatures he needs, but it has confirmed what works and what needs to be improved for next time!
Copper ore was donated in northwest Australia by a kindly mine foreman. I have no idea if there's any copper ore in the southwest where I live, so it was a fortuitous chance that I was able to get some whilst working 1,400km away!
Sadly the air supply is a sensible battery powered blower, as opposed to some cool archaic setup involving the Lister stationary engine and some belts.
