It's slate or some other rock similar to slate, It contains clay minerals, which when combined with Calcium Carbonate, creates Cement. Then you just need to add something for which the cement can attach itself to, aka a non cement particle, such as dirt, sand or clay, or silt, or gravel. Did you notice that I wrote clay, yes you can skip adding something to the mix or add more clay, doesn't really matter, then just add water and you got Concrete mix. The darker stone, is either Slate or Schist. It's mud that's due to pressure and heat turned into shale(mudstone) and then into slate or schist.

Very entertaining to watch, nicely shot, composition and story is high quality. On the project itself, it would be nice to have more info on what types of stones he's roasting, and what are the details on his recipe for the quicklime, slaking it, etc. Like, what are the proportions, and also I've heard there's a time limit on that quicklime being usable in concrete, it won't keep for weeks, etc. Perhaps some captions in the CC button could be added? Also, I'm not sure what purpose is served by filling the trench with concrete first. It's good for cementing stones to stones, but on the bottom like that, it's only cementing stones to dirt. One might say it's a leveling agent, but the bottom course of stones don't really need that, they're not going anywhere, or indeed moving once they're cemented to the next course, or once the concrete is added between them, as a mortar. Could save some work by omitting the bottom layer of concrete, just an idea.

Quick lime and stones. If you have any volcanic ash (as you should there) and smaller sand and pebbles - you can make the historic Roman concrete that gets stronger the older it ages (!) - some architecture is nearely 2000 years old - and better than modern concrete (lasting barely 50 years before wearing out).
@lucasriley874
5 жыл бұрын
He mixes the lime with sand to make his mortar. The volcanic ash usually takes mining of some sort to get at and would be a serious undertaking for one person alone with primitive tools, dangerous too. Lime mortar is good stuf, not quite as strong as Roman concrete but it lasts a long time, pretty much every European castle is made with it.
@occo9072

My stone house will be 200 years old in 2020. It has lime mortar. Cement and stone houses don't go together to well; as the cement damages the stone. Its a mistake people make when repointing and think cement is better, but it ruins the stone. Stone houses need to breathe and lime doesn't hold onto the moisture like cement.
@lucasriley874
4 жыл бұрын
@@occo9072 We were both talking about (ancient style)Roman cement, not modern portland cement. Roman cement at it's most basic is very high quality lime mortar with some pozzolana (volcanic ash) substituted for sand/gravel. Modern portland cement is a different product and, as you say, not a good idea to use it with stone construction.
