HELLO ! You obvisously do not know that PRINCE gave an interview where he answered that question. We have to admit that this interview was given before Hannah joined the camp. PRINCE: "Sheila E." I think his best drummers were Sheila E., Michael Bland, & John Blackwell. I have a hard time with Bobby Z, because for one, most of the stuff on the albums between 1980-86 is drum programming, with prince still playing the actual set on most of those albums. I can’t really name one song that is Bobby Z actually playing on the studio track. Bobby Z is like the Ringo in the group, Well known drummer, but not the most technically skilled.

John Blackwell and Michael Bland. Michael is my personal fave and played in my fave band (NPG95), but, unfortunately, he was forced to play over loops and such. Absolute Friggin Beast. I've said it b4 in comments on someone else's posting; I saw JBJ on tour with Cameo around 96-97 when Cameo released that live album. Up close to the stage. If you know anything about Cameo, Larry Blackmon was merciless/ relentless on drummers. If you didn't cut it then you were sent home. Sum stories can get exaggerated over time but this is vetted regarding LB. Being Cameo's original drummer LB knew what the band needed. I believe at the time their original drummer, legend Jonathan Moffet was out on the road with MJ. JBJ ..was BRUTAL. With a dose of craZY.

I knew John Blackwell when we were students at Berklee College of Music. While attending Berklee, I did a Prince tribute concert that he begged to be a part of. I had already committed to using another drummer, so John didn't play in the tribute show that I led. Blessedly, he got to play for the man himself!! I was fortunate enough to meet up with John during the Musicology Tour. He got me backstage, but unfortunately, I didn't get to meet Prince. Still, it was a fantastic show and he was definitely a phenomenal drummer! Even when John was a student at Berklee he would twirl his drum sticks around. I was proud of his success and saddened by his passing. R.I.H.

Bobby is the first one that mix it from electric to acoustic drums and it made it sounded so unique. Sheila E and Michael Bland to me it's like the power of rock mix it with funk. OMG!! I really liked this one!! While Prince could definitely play drums, the drummers he had in his bands out did him in that lane. I think John Blackwell Jr. was an amazing drummer that complements Prince so well and was just raw and fierce in his delivery. I saw clips from Musicology and Montreoux 2009 and I was very impressed by his skills. RIP brotha John. Michael B. is a stellar drummer, and he was one of the reason why I love early NPG. His ferocious sound and the funk in his playing was effortless. Shhh alone that drum sequence was just masterful!! He was great and Prince's best band drummer. But, hands down Sheila E. is the best ever. Her drumming and percussion skills are a masterclass!! Her sense of sound and urgency and how she attacks a song is just mind blowing. Working with Prince only brought her playing to a higher level and she's still doing it. The best and baddest drummer/percussionist on the face of the planet!!

Thank you for doing this it's delightful awesome fun and with a great funk panel. Who did The Ballad of Dorothy Parker drumming? Whenever I listen to this it's the drums I hear 1st and throughout the song. Without a doubt, to me the best Prince drummer is Prince himself. My favourite instrument of his to see him play. Next to Prince is John Blackwell whenever he plays Shhh ... He's got that Jazz feel that he turned me onto. Then Michael Bland is superb and yes very distinctive. I know he did Shhh 1st but John did it better *ducks* (runs and hides😁). Sentimentally love Hannah and Josh on the cowbells they look like they love what they're doing. So thank you all. Prince was good but he knew his limits Susan Rogers kinda makes note of that very well but I've heard I'm yours was actually Santana drummer who played on that song and I heard Bobby Z did some work on Prince 2nd album maybe the slower song's to be exact Bobby was a 6 imo average not bad but okay Sheila definitely a 9 everything she touched was amazingly funky she did drum fills on diamonds and pearls and some other stuff, Michael B a 10 he was closest to Clyde Subberfeld (James Brown Drummer) he kept the groove and a heavy hitter Kirk is a 6 average in some regards imo not bad really not , John Blackwell a 10 right off the bat the way he played like he had extra 2 arms so fast and soulful Cora Coleman doesn't get enough props she deserves a 8 excellent drumming Hannah gets a 8 very impressive and funky, for honorable We gotta mention Morris Day though Prince studied him his work on The Time project's is highly funky there's some talks that Morris might of played on Controversy song a few others he gotta get a solid 9 but the list itself it's Sheila and Michael B for me This Video was really good 👌

This is a hard one to answer! It’s a toss up between Michael Bland and Sheila E. John Blackwell is in the mix too!

Prince and Sheila have the most flavor. They have a very similar groove. Michael B is my next fave...I prefer him to Blackwell. Sorry.

Michael B all day long. Home grown, powerful, funky, jazzy; Priince knew how 2 pick his talent. Kirk was his worst drummer in my opinion...

Other than Prince himself Sheila E . She had the chemistry with something which despite the talent of others . She has a style very distinctive she has sensuality . Fusion and Latin , funk , she could also give also a run for thrash drummers of the era s money ..see solos on 1987-1988 era .

I was blessed to see Prince in Concert 11 times across the country and stadiums, then the smaller venues as well in the after shows, and I’ve seen a couple of different drummers performing with Prince, I also own quite a few different Prince tours on DVD/BLU RAY, I would have to say John Blackwell is #1 by a long shot, not only because Prince admitted that himself in a interview, but also cause he played with him consistently for the longest, and held down entire shows without fatigue or ever missing a beat! #2 was definitely Michael Bland and although in my opinion John Blackwell was the 2nd coming of Michael Bland, he literally took that style, technique, pocket, and flare when needed to the next level. Sheila E, Kirk, and Bobby Z were all next in line as well as the future variations of drummers. As Prince evolved so did his quest for great drummers and musicians

Great job guys! It's very hard to do a list like this for me. I have to disregard favorite songs, for favorite solo performances which is tough. Then theres separating dynamics from understated performances, that suited the song best. Dont even get me started on sheila. I have to totally disregard her non prince contributions, which by itself, is freaking insane. I know it's a cop out, but I have to go with prince. I liked the pocket he left himself to play around. If the next round is rhythm guitar player, the answer is Dez. I love wendy but at the time, Dez could do shit Prince wouldn't do til later.

The top 3 John Blackwell, Prince, and Sheila E no particular order. Not taking nothing away from the other drummers they are very talented and deserve recognition.
