My all time favorite Prince song. When I visited Paisley Park after his death. I was determined not to leave until I heard this song and I was in the restroom when I heard the beat drop and ran straight to the dance floor.

My daughter (32) asked me what it was like back then so I told her. 10 years, 10 albums and he shocked and surprised us every time. He didn't bother to plan, over promote and focus on hits like MJ. He simply grabbed us by the collar and dragged us kicking and screaming lol.

See...THIS is why you win the day!! No one is on this YT reacting to "If I Was Your Girlfriend." At best, they're listening to his hits. Ya need to hear "Shockadelica" and "La La La, He He Hee." Try some early stuff with "Ronnie Talk to Russia" (it was as political as he got) and "DMSR" (Dance, Music, Sex, Romance) both classics. Hell, the man never made a bad song. There's just an ORDER of greatness!! If ya want funk tho, "Tambourine" is a James Brown-style shoulder shake.

Prince wrote the song about his ex fiancé, who happened to be his guitar player Wendy Melvoin’s twin sister, Susannah. He wanted to let her know that he wanted to be as close to her as her twin sister was. Like you’re reaction to this song. You’re neglecting prince’s talent by putting them in the same category. Prince was a master musician on a few different instruments. as far as I’m aware, Michael wasn’t.

@@HitTheLofi Agreed Louis. Prince to me was more the complete artist, he was an unbelievable musician as well. Just to clarify, I wasn`t comparing their talent as such, I meant it more in the sense about them being equal in their superstar status. I think Prince was just as big as Michael, that`s what I was trying to get across.

Prince changed the conversation with each new album. His style would change, his hair would change, the music would change. It was so exciting. Also this song is about his relationship with SusannahMelvoin, twin sister of his guitarist Wendy Melvoin, to whom he was engaged at the time. He wanted the romantic relationship with her but also wanted the same closeness she had with her sister and her girlfriends. Back then dummies made the assumption that he was singing about a man🙄

FACTS about PRINCE ROGERS NELSON creativeness NOBODY compares 2 him. I've been a fan since his 1st release on 8TRACK "FOR YOU" the single was "SOFT and WET" I was 12yrs old I played it morning noon and night 🌃 I equally purchase the PRINCE album the single was *(I wanna be your lover) My personal PURPLE RAIN long before the storm of fair weather fans was "DIRTY MIND" this was my *(PURPLE RAIN) DIRTY MIND was my teen favorite way before PURPLE RAIN ☔ I got to see PRINCE ROGERS NELSON live in concert with VANITY 6 and THE TIME when I was 15...I still sorry to this very day I miss his DIRTY MIND tour 15mins away from my house. I was 13yrs Old I hear about the tour because it wasn't advertised like nowadays basically. I seen PRINCE LIVE about 8 times RICK JAMES twice, once with Tina Marie. I seen Michael Jackson live OFF THE WALL tour Don't Stop till you get enough was the single. I seen Luther Vandross with Anita Baker. Janet Jackson RHYTHM NATION tour...Plus several more NOBODY TOUCHES "PRINCE ROGERS NELSON" RESPECTFUL NOBODY was better. I knew without any doubt this was truly a serious performer when I was young. From the very beginnings 8TRACK player days. It basically didn't take PURPLE RAIN ☔ for me to know he was the "TRUTH"🙏🏽

If you think about it, that one line "would you tell me all the things you forgot when I was your man" hits hard. It implies that you talk to your girlfriends different than you talk to your man - you don't let him see your true feelings all the time.
