it's hard to describe how big this album was when it came out. it topped the charts for about 6 months and all genres embraced it (rock, R&B, soul, pop, etc.). Back then, albums were played all the way thru when people got together for a party. So I was kinda waiting to hear 'the beautiful ones' after your reaction ended, haha. Now I'm gonna listen to the full album. It's perfection.

The female lead vocalist who's singing with Prince is his co-star on the movie, Purple Rain, is actress Apollonia Kotero. But Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman do played keyboard and bass guitar. By the way, this song did peaked at the #25 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart during the early winter of 1985. A definitely banger song indeed!!!

@Eric4471066, By the way you're partially right in saying Apollonia is credited as co-lead singer with Prince as a duet on "Take Me With You." However, Lisa Coleman also laid down a lead vocal track on this jam doubling Apollonia's vocal tracks in the studio. And, Jill Jones sang a ghost track initially to help Apollonia so she had something to follow. As you said yourself Apollonia was an "actress" & didn't know how to sing at all when Prince first threw her in the vocal booth. Just saying... ++Peace, Funk & Rock n' Roll 4 Your Soul My Friend++ 🤘😜🤘

When we look back at the iconic albums, it's so easy to think that they achieved such exalted status by capturing the sound and spirit of the time. But of course, they didn't so much capture it as define it. It is albums like this that made the 1980s what it was, an era that so many of us who were there would relive right now if we could. But even more so, those that were not there yearn to experience. Incredible then to think, that this album, as with so many iconic albums, manages to be both completely of its time, but so undying in its appeal as to be timeless.

This is actually in my bottom 5 songs in Prince’s entire catalog…and I think I have something like 1,800 songs of his on my phone. It’s just way too poppy for me. And Purple Rain isn’t even in my top 25 albums. 🫣 Don’t throw rocks at me! 😂😂😂 Apollonia Kotero on co-lead vocals with Prince on this one. Lisa plays keys and Wendy plays rhythm guitar during live performances. Up to this point, synthesizers were used for string and horn sounds in Prince’s music, but you’re right, this song contained cello, viola, and violin parts. He continued using a lot of string arrangements on the next two albums as well - Around the World in a Day & Parade.

I think this is an excellent song with a unique string arrangement by claire fischer. that's an extreme take, very unusual to consider this in the bottom 5 considering a lot of the stuff he did with npg/by himself in the 90s and 2000s.
@smh93
10 ай бұрын
@@romulus_ See, the stuff later in his career gets so much unwarranted hate. If you look at the merit of the music alone without accounting for nostalgia or the marketing machine behind the original release, the music itself is way better later in his career. I really love Computer Blue and Darling Nikki on this album, but Take Me With U just sounds like a song any artist could have made. I don’t think Clare started doing the string arrangements until Parade; it would have been David Coleman for Purple Rain and ATWIAD, if I’m not mistaken.

Prince was amazing. I have a reaction recommendation that would likely get a lot of views. It's by a recording duo most people in younger generations are completely unfamiliar, but they went from being unknowns to their 1989 album going 6X Platinum (sold 6 million copies in the US) with 3 #1 US charts hits, a #2 US chart hit, and a #4 US chart hit. They won a Grammy for one of the songs. They were later embroiled in the biggest scandal in Grammy history when it came to light they did not sing a note on the album. They were lip-syncing. There is a great documentary out about them recently released. One of them (Rob) spiraled out of control and died from a drug overdose years after being stripped of their Grammy award. The other (Fabrice) handled it much better and is currently married with kids and still performing. Apparently Fabrice took some voice lessons and sounds pretty good though the crowds now are much smaller. If you haven't already guessed the name of the duo / band, I'm talking about Milli Vanilli (Fab Morvan and Rob Pilatus). Blame It On The Rain is the song that won the Grammy. Girl You Know It's True and Baby Don't Forget My Number are the other two #1 hits from the 1989 album entitled Girl You Know It's True. The songs were fire. Their look and dance moves were fire. This would be a great reaction video!!!

Let's face it: on the whole, Prince's entire career is, pretty much, "a masterpiece!" 🤘🤘😛😛 Prince DID like to track the drums himself ...and I don't know the specifics of this song 🤷 ...but "Bobby Z" [Robert Rivkin] WAS The Revolution's drummer, however (and he could slay). Bobby went on to Produce Wendy * Lisa, when Prince's dissolution of The Revolution made them leave and break-off as: Wendy & Lisa {That band was GREAT! ...but their 3rd album: EROICA (NOT "erotica," no. Eroica: Greek for "heroism"-approx.) is EXTRAVAGANTLY underrated. ...And the band on THAT is **mind-blowing**🤯🤯🤯 ...SO great it's illegal to describe! Carla Azar is the drummer on that --actually, I believe she was the primary drummer for ALL of Wendy & Lisa's albums🤔🤔 ('80s-early '90s albums) [She had had a mild, scant, form of success with the band: Ednaswap, before (They were the band who wrote and originally recorded: "Torn" which became a hit for Natalie Imbruglia several years later). She is, currently; in a band (which she founded) called: AUTOLUX; who you would do yourself proud to check out! Excellent!🤘🤘🔥🔥, Carla, also, tracked the drums for some of Jack White's solo albums (I believe that it was the first 2, actually🤷-but I might not have that, entirely, correct🤷). At any rate: Carla Azar is one of the underappreciated MONSTER behind the kit! EVER! (Much like: HEART's Michael DeRosier -whom I have mentioned to you, numerous times!)!] -Anyway!: Bobby Z was The Revolution's drummer, but, yes: PRINCE DID track a LOT of drum parts himself! I am not certain "who, specifically, plays what;" on THIS song. 🤷 Wendy Melvoin is the guitarist. She played rhythm AND lead (although, certainly: Prince was "the shredder" of the band and I can't name individual solos cut my Wendy. 🤷) -Dual solos/harmony solos, Prince would, generally, double them, in studio; but: live, definitely, you would hear he and Wendy playing the parts together. Lisa Coleman was, primarily, a keyboardist ...but she did also play some stringed-instruments and horns. BOTH Wendy & Lisa sang background/harmony vocals. ...Wendy's twin sister (who was staring a relationship with Prince, around this time): Susannah, also, sang and was, in fact, the person whom the song "Nothing Compares 2 U" was written ABOUT, as well as, first recorded by (She was: "lead vocalist, female;" for another side-project band of Prince's, in the '80s: The Family. ...Naturally: it wasn't until Sinéad O'Connor's brilliant cover of that song that it became a worldwide hit and known to everyone!-💜💜💗Sinéad! 💔💔 SO beloved! SO missed !- ...As far as I am aware, Susannah did NOT become a regular performer in The Revolution until: Parade ...but: she, definitely, was, consistently, "in-and-out" of the studio (🤷 ...and may have, also, contributed to this, or other songs, on Purple Rain. 🤷♀). ...as someone else (I believe) mentioned: around this time Prince's "protégé-du-jour" was: Jill Jones ...and it is, definitely, possible that she was, somehow, involved, as well 🤷🤷 (but: I have no "proof" or "assurances of such an idea."🤷♂). As mentioned by others: Appolonia Kotero (who was cast as "The Kid's" "love interest" in the Purple Rain movie) was listed as the co-lead/female lead vocalist, on this cut. Appollonia COULD sing, but: she had no, real, experience doing so, at this period. When "Vanity" retired (felt driven to move away from music, for newly, religiously-driven reasons as I recall ...but: more than "possibly," manipulation or "asserted control" by: Prince himself, as well 😕🤷) and "blew-up" Prince's "secondary unit": Vanity 6, Apollonia gave him the opportunity to "...see? ...You don't, really, matter, Vanity" Miss Vanity; by, subsequently, re-creating "the Vanity-6" as: Appolonia-6 ...and, continuing the same ideas/"attitude," going forward. (I believe that: because of his [Prince's] focus being split and "wormed away" by: all of the issues with Vanity 6, following THAT up with: Appollonia 6 (recreating the idea), his "on-again-off-again" struggles with: Susannah Melvoin, his not appreciating, fully, everything he HAD with a band as tight and gifted and COOL as: The Revolution; his being unable to "make peace with"/"resolve" issues with his father (which, of course, Purple Rain, at the VERY least: REMINDED him of or, possibly, brought into more intense focus...🤷🤷); et al.!; that Jill Jones, actually, SUFFERED! She deserved more of his focus and more guidance. She was THAT good ...but🤷 ...can't change the past, anymore 🤦🤦....). While numerous people in the outfit (including, of course; Prince himself!) COULD, in fact, play bass, the bassist (and one of the most consistent members of Prince's band, as far as: amount of time lasted and: degree of skill!) was: "Brownmarc" [Mark Brown]. Wendy Melvoin did NOT play bass with The Revolution. Brownmarc, basically, was "the next guy in line" after: Andre Cymone (who was a H.S. buddy of Prince's and part of the ealry bands he put together, before WB signed him and brought him out to Cali. to do an album.). The Revolution DID, also, have another "keyboard player," besides Lisa Coleman. "Dr. Fink" [Matthew/Matt Fink]. Dr. Fink, basically, stuck to synths., samples/loops and such (Lisa sometimes did play piano and some other things, as well as singing). "Dr. Fink" was the cat with the stethoscope. ...Fink was, also, one of the earliest members of the band which was (in Fink's case: became!) The Revolution, he joined Prince in the '70s, at some point (I think I remember it being: 1978. 🤷I may be off by a year, either way🤷) and stuck through the time that the band became The Revolution!

B.T.W.: "The Beautiful Ones" and "Take Me With U" are/have long been, pretty much, my favorite songs on: PURPLE RAIN (if I "had to choose" which I DON'T and don't, actually, WANT to!). Most "biggest albums of their career" are NOT "their, actual, best" or "perfect" albums; by MANY bands (I would say: a majority!). THIS one: definitely IS!

The song's barely started and there's more ideas than is reasonable for a top-whatever pop song.

Personally this isn’t one of my fav. Tracks from the Purple Album. But I’m glad you guys are checking out his catalog. He has so many good songs to discover. And his live performances eclipse anything laid down on vinyl. He is my GOAT. He’s our modern Mozart. He does it all.

Back in the day, if you played your cards right, this is a song that could straight up get you laid. Sinatra x 10.
