I must admit that given the film's glowing reviews, I expected "Spencer" to be something other than what it was, a portrait of Princess Diana as an almost insufferable neurotic. That was certainly not the fault of Kristen Stewart, who had to work with the script and storyline she had in front of her and did her very best with what she was given. But in my personal opinion, both the actor and the late princess herself really deserved far better than this rather tawdry spectacle of an entitled drama queen who appeared at times to revel in her own perceived victimhood. The real Diana Spencer likely married too young and as a result, found herself living in an anachronistic institution. Nevertheless, she persevered. But you'd never know it, watching "Spencer."

She didn't seem neurotic at all, but someone suffocated by the environment and reacting in a reasonable way to the circumstance.

Don’t know why you perceived it that way when the rest of the world saw it as the awful way they treated the Princess of Wales.

I’m no fan of Kristen Stewart, but I commend her for pulling out all the stops in her limited repertoire to gamely attempt the nearly impossible task of portraying the inimitable Diana. Far better actresses then she have struggled to meet that bar. Given that absolutely nothing about her physical person, voice mannerisms or demeanor suggest Diana, she was starting with a lot of obstacles. I’m interested in the thought processes of the casting Director who immediately thought that this American grunge waif could embody the People’s Princess better than anyone else. Stewart scrubs up well… But they couldn’t even give her a wig that looked convincing. She tries hard for Diana’s cadences in speaking but her voice is far to husky and deep And with all the whispering and hitching and gasping she sounds like an asthmatic. I can appreciate that she’s trying really really hard though and giving it her all since she lacks entirely the kind of substantial theater training that would’ve covered accents. I think this movie is best enjoyed as an alt reality spoof of Royal life Featuring people portraying caricatures of some actual famous people in the royal family. To try and accept it as a traditional biopic just can’t happen. The manic accompaniment music to this clip perfectly suns up the kind of clockwork Orange circus Funhouse feeling of this project.

I have not seen the movie. However, I've read a number of articles about Diana's mental health. Before the wedding, Diana pretended to be easygoing and cooperative. The honeymoon was a disaster. Diana had unrealistic expectations and was disappointed and angry. She was binge eating and purging multiple times a day and crying. She was combative and had a physically destructive outburst and Charles was alarmed. He found a therapist for her before the honeymoon was over. Diana refused therapy. Charles had a number of doctors see Diana trying to help her. Sir John Batten, the queen's physician, believed Diana had borderline personality disorder (BPD). It's thought that BPD is caused by childhood trauma and genetic factors. Batten was concerned that Diana's children would inherit the genetic factors. Diana was traumatized by her parents fighting and divorce. Diana was 6 years old when her mother left. Diana talked about her unhappy childhood and said she felt unwanted, abandoned, and unloved. Diana struggled with emotional anxiety most of her life. She was diagnosed with insomnia in 1983. Long-term lack of sleep and prolonged use of sleeping pills promoted irrational thinking. She was increasingly paranoid. I believe Charles was sympathetic at first but became irritated and disgusted by Diana's bulimia and other self-destructive behaviors. Especially since she refused professional help. Charles was turned off by the smell of vomit. There relationship seldom worked. Diana said they had fleeting moments of happiness. Their relationship was increasingly toxic and both were miserable by 1985. They informally separated in 1986.

There are articles and books written about Diana's mental health. One of the books is Diana in Search of Herself by Sally Bedell Smith.

It was a depressing movie. Nice to see now that there were some funny parts in it. I see complaints on the actress. I think her acting is good here , shes just portraying Diana as the script described her.

“The People’s Princess”? That sounds Communist- like “The People’s Republic of China”! “The Queen of Hearts”? That’s a card in a standard deck! And don’t forget the character in “Alice In Wonderland” that wanted to lop off everyone’s heads! She was just popular because she was young and pretty and didn’t act like a Royal! Now she’s up there with Marilyn Monroe, JFK and Elvis Presley as the stuff of conspiracy theories!

Diana put those words in everyone mouths People's princess and Queen of their hearts. Oh my stars! How corny was this air head? All she did was vacation, vacation, vacation. Vacation from what? It certainly wasn't from WORK! Princess Ann is a hard worker.
