Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) First time watching thanks for the info very helpful. I had a couple of question can I use lime on my pepper plants last year all my pepper plants had end rot. Does liquid fertilizer affect tomato plants that are blooming or already have tomatoes? Thank you for your time.

Hey gary!!! Im sure you know now but you can get tons of free 2-5 gallon buckets from store bakeries. They are food grade because they are usually full of frosting. The bakeries throw them out daily and i just ask (jewel bakery usually) and they are happy to get rid of them. Saves tons of money. Thanks for all you do to help us learn. Take care 🌿

As a brand new gardener... I know NOTHING! Your videos are SO very clear, concise and very well explained. *You don't go on and on with a story and you don't gloss over important parts. I live in an Apt & will be container gardening... and I have a disability so I will be creating raised platforms for my containers. Have you done a video on the merits (or down-sides) to top watering vs. bottom watering... should I create snorkels or just put water in the lower container and let it leach upward, etc.? Do you have videos on air pruning (slotted pots with retaining cloth or grow bags) vs. closed pots? Since I am just getting started now is the time I have to make some rather long-term decisions. (I've already found the affordable options for both containers and plenty of free 5 gallon buckets. I'm also doing plenty of worm farming to create lots of castings. Do you have any videos to explain what my soil mixture should be - or why I shouldn't use 100% casting, etc.?

After past attempts I just thought I was bad at gardening but I decided to give it another try after watching many of your videos over the winter. In the US they always seem to recommend 5 gallons or bigger but where I live you always here that 10l (3,3 gallons) is fine for tomatoes. I tried it last season and yes it works and is a great method if you are interested in trying as many varieties as possible rather than having a very high yield from each plant.

Yes, watering on hot days can be a problem. I think smaller pots are an option when your space is very limeted, so you'll most likely have not as many plants and be able to water them daily or even twice a day...

another great video Gary! I'm doing most all of that, although I think I'll head to big lots and grab some of those larger trugs like you have there. Also, I hadn't been doing any side dressing so I think I'll add that in this year too. I'm learning so much each year now, this fall will be my second half of my second year growing in containers completely by myself, and enduring the "interesting challenges" of doing my gardening and most everything from sitting on a medical scooter, lol. My goodness, such lessons in patience, :) But I thank you for this video, I don't know why, but you always come out with exactly what I need to learn from or "bone up on" at exactly the exact time I'm needing it! It's nice seeing your face too, besides noticing your really nice tan it's also nice to be able to look you in the face when you're talking to us. Teri Ruiz Thanks for watching! Yeah that video I needed to be in the picture. I think I would use the powdered lime the same way or a tad less. You will have more going into the soil or on top of the soil as a powder. But I dont think it will matter in the long run.

@406Steven

Tropical fish are especially sensitive to any pollutants in the water, anything that is safe for them I feel safe with in my own food. But there can be a build up of "salts" over time, which are basically the byproducts and unused portions of the fertilizers that you use which is why you need to have soil that drains well (flush it out of the system) or, in a hydroponic system, flush out the old water periodically. I use an EC meter on my hydro plants and compare used water to fresh tap water to determine when the nutrients have been used up and the salts are starting to build up in the water. That goes down the drain for the next organism to consume and process and I refill with fresh water and nutrients. People spend too much time on social media getting freaked out by false information and buy into hype and buzz words and not enough time researching what they're actually talking about.

Thank you for the great video and excellent info. Just a little FYI. The reason for people screaming about organics is... The chelating agents in the chem fertilizer known as HEEDTA or EDTA will cause the plant to uptake heavy metals if present in the soil and those metal end up in the fruit. It truly is fine for the plant even if questionable for human consumption. Again, great video.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN

+Endorfen2011 Thanks for the info. One of the main reasons is many people say the are SALT verses understanding they fall in a group called chemical salts. Over use is a problem. Any idea how HEEDTA or EDTA causes the plant to pull in heavy metals. That is interesting.

Just watched your post about growing tomatoe's in containers or Tubs but I have been growing tomatoes' for quite a while and the thing is to keep it simple and not to worry about the container size the compost or the.feed that you use we are not growing on commercial size here so so the thing to do is use a normal size container tub or even a bucket or a thick plastic bag and fill with a multipurpose compost and you can put your plant in that and when you get your first fruit use a liquid feed and it will carry on do it's own thing(that is providing you with fruit for your table)very happily as long as you water it regularly.

A plant cannot tell the difference between organic and chemical fertilizers. However the soil biology can. The soil biology is key to nutrient breakdown, ph, and keeping the plant free of diseases.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
2 жыл бұрын
True but soil biology can based on the quantity of use. Chemical over use is a problem. And diseases are still present no matter what. Soil biology fully fix problems they would have gone extinct. @@THERUSTEDGARDEN Chemical fertilizers are like steroids. The have their purpose. They are also easier to produce and are cheap. That is why they jave not gone extinct. For example a nursery will not use organic fertilizers because of how long it takes to produce them and the costs associated with that. Throwing chemical fertilizers in the ground can and will eventually permanently damage soil biology unless proper drainage is present to wasj away salinity ect.

I think the drip system would be worth it. Helps in the hot hot days of summer. Yep any fertilizer works and if you use compost and other things in your beds, the chemical ferts will do no harm. Awesome video Gary..... Lots of great info.... I have 20 tomato plants 5 containers are 3 gallon all the rest are 5 gallon I really see the difference in the growth of the 5 gal verses the 3 gal. All my plants are at least 5 feet tall which is a problem. When they get that high some of the branches will start to sag and eventually break. So I got some fence from Lowes and cut them into sections rolled them up to fit the diameter of the pail to make my own tomato cage. Im using a rain gutter system fed by a 500 gal rain water container. Have you had any luck with cucumbers or melons in containers? Do you have a video ? Most of my plants are doing well but a few (5) tomatos the leaves started turning yellow and then went to brown mostly at the bottom of the plants but are still producing tomatos. I don't understand what happened... its possible that like you mentioned in the video that the container dried out... Any suggestions??? I'll keep an eye out for you next videos..... Please respond if you have time thank you

Hey Gary ; I’ve watched both your videos on container tomatoes & peppers & am curious as to why you add lime to tomatoes but not peppers, since they can both get BER??
@THERUSTEDGARDEN

You can but I have found watering to be the issue and peppers tend to be less demanding. Tomatoes often get BER because roots get damage from lack of consistent watering. Great video as always! Any tips on what to do for your tomatoes (or peppers or ____) when you get too much rain? Here in Central Texas I've gotten 19" over the past 3 weeks with very little sun (plenty of heat!) and I'm worried that my plants are not only getting too much water but that all of the soil nutrients are washing away. In addition to growing in raised beds this year, I've got a few plants in Wal-Mart bags as an experiment and figured I'd have to fertilize or side dress with compost more often but all this rain has me thinking I need to be more aggressive. Any suggestions?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN

+aix2379 We are getting rain like 15 days now. Not that much. Wow. But I would give them a shot of liquid soluble. Organic or chemical, whatever you prefer. Just for a boost. The foliar feed is best. Right bags and container need ongoing feedings.

great videos. Chock full of info. Can I plant indeterminate tomatoes in a large container? 5 or 10 gallon etc?
@RusAlkaPraff
7 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for such educational videos! This is probably the best informational source I could find so far. I am growing my first ever container cherry tomatoes, and I have a question regarding fertilizing. Right now I have my seedlings in three stages: ones that I just put in the soil three days ago which just broke a surface; 2-inch seedlings that have their first true leaves; and one 4 inch seedling of indeterminate dwarf cherry variety called Husky Cherry Red. As far as I understand from your videos, I should start fertilizing the two latter seedlings. However, I find it a little bit confusing: in the other video (KIS, I believe) you are stressing that it is important to keep fertilizer digits in 5-5-5 range. But in this video you are talking about 10-10-10 numbers. Could you please clarify that? Does it mean that I should use 5-5-5 numbers for younger seedlings (which is quarter strength chemical fertilizer) and 10-10-10 for tomatoes that are just placed in the large 5-gallon container? Or should I continuously use 5-5-5, but more frequently? Thank you in advance, Ala
@lebensschueler

Ala Mahilianskaya the numbers are just a ratio. So a 10-10-10 fertilizer is exactly the same as a 5-5-5 fertilizer.

Hello Gary and thank you for the informative video! I planted tomatoes from seed for the first time this year. My tomatoes grew very healthy. I bought an organic fertilizer that is 3-1-4 Everything was great my tomatoes are very nice and big, but noticed the brown spots as you mentioned in your video. Then I checked my fertilizer did not have any calcium added even-though it is for all vegetables including tomatoes. My pepper is just starting to flower and unfortunately the flowers are falling off, but also the flower stem is shrivelled and there are some dry ones as well. I feed them too with the same fertilizer as the tomatoes. I have 16 “ pots for tomatoes and 14” for peppers. I bought dolomitic lime (they only had that in the store)and put about 4-5oz on top of tomatoes and 2oz on the peppers because I didn’t know how big your pots were in the video. Will that be enough for my plants? And how often do you repeat the lime on top? P.s, I didn’t know about putting lime on the bottom of the pots when transplanting...so all I’m left is with putting it like you say. Please help me! I’m a Newby at this. Thank you!😊

So heat caused flowers to drop. You can just sprinkle some lime (as you have) or gypsum around your plants. Not too much, to give hem calcium. The tomatoes and peppers typically like a higher Phosphorous number over time when flowering and producing. If you have a chance look to up the P. Lime just 1x. Too much changes the pH. It is a mirco nutrient so you need very little. Those pots are about the size of mine. I wouldn't add any more lime as you put on plenty. Just keep them evenly watered now. This might be a case I use 1/2 strength fert like Miracle Gro, 1x. Gives you plants all they need to get back on track.

Thank you Gary! Do you think I put on too much lime? I went a little less then what you put on yours. Also, half strength would be 12-4-8? And you would put this on only one time? Sorry, just want to make sure I read it right.😊 thanks for all your help!!!

Another reason to use the lime is that peat moss is really acidic (mine is 4.2), and would probably lock out nutrients.

I found this channel while looking for videos to help me with my vegetable gardening. Great info. This will be my third year growing tomatoes, peppers, and green beans. The last 2 years I have used some of the more expensive soil mixes on the market with not the greatest results. This year, I want my grow to be successful, and I want to try building my own soil. Please let me know what you think of it: peat moss, black kow composted manure, bone meal, blood meal, azomite, garden lime, and use alaska fish fertilizer. If this is good, how much should I add of each? Are there any changes/additions/deletions you would make to this? Right now I have tomatoes and peppers already started and growing indoors under a cmh light. Once we get past the last frost, usually around mid april, they will go outside. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for responding Gary. I watched alot of your videos last night. Thanks for taking the time to educate people about how to grow properly. I actually have the azomite already, from last year. What I was going to do with that is put a small amount of that in the bottom part of the container. Once the roots start to grow and expand, they will get to the azomite, so they don't hit it right away. I will be planting in containers. You said the fertilizer choices are effective, should I be doing something different? Is the lime a good choice? How would you mix this? Would I need any other calcium supplements? The last 2 years I have had issues with blossom end rot. And the normal issues with birds chewing holes in the tomatoes, and deer eating just the leaves from the pepper plants. Also, do you ph the water you use to water the plants?

As always, you provide superb information Gary! Have a question on applying mulch to container tomatoes. Presently, I have a couple inches of mulch in my container tomatoes. Should I pull the mulch back from the tomato stems so that there is a 2-inch space between the mulch and plant stems? I read that mulch resting against the stem can cause rot or disease problems due to trapped moisture in the mulching material. Thanks for responding!
