There is more to it. The port might not be talking to a particular switch possibly because of failing to negotiate speed. This happens when the switch port starts failing but remains reliable on other ports. It's a very annoying switch failure and I see it in the field. It sometimes manifests as switch port light pulsing but obviously acting differently from other ports. In that case, the lights on Ethernet port will not activate and you will think the printer port is dead. It should be tested with a crossover cable to a computer with a port set to not auto-negotiate speed and possibly with a loopback adapter. Also, there are USB hubs. The printer should support their use, which solves the "I need another USB port" issue.
