I have been printing some of my prints on Epson Metallic Paper, they are great for astro sunsets, and water prints but are very shinny. I watched a video Nico did last week from Nebula Photos channel, were he used Transparency film to print and then back lit it, It is a great effect. Since I have my own print shop at home with 4 large format printer I ordered a roll on the stock and have been working with it the last week to see what I could do. I have to say the effect is very cool. My wife asked me to print a photo of a stained glass window from a local church, I did mounted it to a piece of diffusing film paper and put it in our kitchen window, It looks great, I am working to enlarge it to fit the whole windows to see how it looks

I’ve been printing some of my best images lately, so this is a timely video. My printing is all on A3+ sized paper (13”x19”). I’ve been considering a larger format, but there’s more info needed before I go up in size. I like the way the Canon Lustre papers show off the images without a lot of reflection that happens with glossy stocks. So far the images I’ve hung have really garnered positive attention. Really good video Joe!

Nice Joe! I've printed out a number of images.. mostly on paper using Amazons service. I do have a few metal prints too. Glossy looks so cool.. but the reflections make it hard to actually see anything, lol. I've started doing prints in matté. That seems to help the colors and deal with some dynamic range better than Glossy. What I usually do is order a bunch of prints from amazon with the 4x6 size to see how they look before ordering the larger print. Your project sounds interesting. I wonder what it could be. :)

Good introduction to AP printing Joe. While I've not had much of anything complete enough to print the last couple of years, I now finally have an image I want to see printed. It's more of a milestone really to get my a$$ in gear and moving forward with my hobby. I'm a little late seeing your video. Just yesterday I ordered my SH2-101 image in a 5 x 7 metal print. I'm fully expecting it to be a little on the dark side but it will be a week or so before I see it. I am thinking a good test would be to process our image as we find pleasing on our calibrated monitors, then make a copy and stretch it out to what we think would be a better "printed" image. Next I'd crop each image in half then put them back together. I would expect to see contrast and color differences on the same plate or paper etc and you want to instruct the printer to NOT edit or enhance your image. After all it's out image and we are the editors right? 😀 One thing you can do at metalprints.com is order a sample pack of 3 or 5 small images. This is more to decide the background or base properties of the metal prints. Hope your weather improves soon!

Hey Joe. :) Great video! I think it's really nice to print some of the older pics as well...,so many memories how you started ...and how far you've come - and especially when it was your wife's present to you. The shiny/ glossy acrylic one (2nd/3rd pic) looks also really cool, ..although I'm more a fan of matt prints because I find it easier to see. Unfortunately, Amazon does not offer the print service in Germany - as far as I know... The Image of your APOD-NGC 6888 looks amazing printed on metal. So far, I used the print service from a drugstore (on paper) and I added some image description in the lower part.- Besides brightening up the image for printing, do you also increase the colors/saturation? I never know how it will come out printed with regard to the colors, brightness etc... cs 👍🏼

Our APOD looks great on metal as well 👍 Completely agree with you about bumping the brightness and colours for printing. Never got an image I'm happy enough to print, hopefully sometime soon... I've worked using wide format printing a few times, gloss give you a darker blacks (at the expense of more reflection), matt is safe but can look flat and lifeless. if in doubt, I'd always recommend a semi-gloss or satin finish. If you can find somewhere that does 'UV printing' you can choose any flat substrate, glass, metal, plastic, slate, wood and can also print white - always liked the idea of doing a starless nebula image on the back side of a piece of glass and the stars on the front - would give a slight 3D appearance !

Nice! Thanks for the comparison. I’ve found that matt aluminum (dibond) is the best for larger prints. A glossy print will make it hard to put on most wall because of all the glare. Glossy prints tends to get more depth into the image though, but if you can’t look at the print from disstance and enjoy the depth then it really doesn’t matter. If you have the money, I would have chosen pure aluminum print. Meaning, no carbonara nor a dibond. Just the primer on the metall surface to get that matt finish with texture and then the print itself. Because of the thickness of the metall, the price is high. Dibond is very thinn…

I'm just now starting to get into printing. I don't have a printer suitable for photo printing. I've had the ink clog and congeal too often because of infrequency of use, so I got rid of the color printer and opted for a plain laser printer. I am going to use a printing service. I am likely going to go with MPIX. Have you used them since you posted this video? Have you used a different surface medium, or any kind of finish coating? I'm also interested in whether or not you've experimented yet with boosting the exposure values. Ultimately what I will likely do is standardize the type of adjustments I make and create presets for file export, that will also have a watermark that indicates the adjustment - "+1 EV," "+2 EV," etc, so that I can make test prints at smaller sizes before ordering a larger print. I guess what I am wondering is if you've found any specific adjustments to make or to avoid - increase the exposure, but maintain the blacks, boost the highlights... Whatever insight you have would be appreciated.
