This may all be repeat information for you...I don't know . . .I use high density insulating foam with an almost glossy smooth - like side as it's easy to cut using an exacto ... but I can always seem to find it in refuse for free. When I do foam block prints I paint the foam with a few coats of acrylic...this acts as a sort of sealer. I've experimented by adding some decoupage to the paint to make it 'fatter' and that seems to help create a smoother surface on the print block, so that the ink or acrylic (I use either to print with) won't get sucked into the block and look so 'dry' on the print. Also, painting the print block surface before carving is a common technique used in linocut blocks...the contrast of the block color and proper choice of paint color helps to navigate through the transfer and cutting process. Try printing on black paper using a 'fatted' white acrylic for your ink...dry it and then go back and hand colorize the print using water colors. If you don't over wet it, the colors won't run too much(a little tricky)...but it makes for a nice effect.

All great suggestions! I usually do this with kids so I like to keep it simple but your suggestions are really good and helpful. Thanks for watching and commenting.

You could tape the drawing over the styro plate and trace it to transfer an indention if you wanted to skip the graphite step (you can trace the indention with a pen or pencil to make it more visible if you're using several colors in one print and need to see the drawing). I'm doing a virtual camp class and this is a great project for them b/c it is easy to do at home with basic equipment and still is a good intro to the printmaking concepts- thank you!!

Thank you for your feedback, the graphite step didn't really work and the indentation might be enough. I use the graphite step more successfully in this video kzitem.info/news/bejne/tIOXyZ2uk6uZlI4 where I use craft foam to make stamps. Also a great printmaking project for kids. You could probably use the Styrofoam instead of craft foam and mount it on cardboard to make stamps. I used to encourage the kids to come up with a stamp that could be used in multiple ways so it was a different project that this one. Like a block print that repeats or a stamp like a leaf that can be repeated to make a picture.I think I just gave myself an idea for my next video. Anyway, thanks so much for watching and leaving a comment. Have a great day!

Do you mean to apply the ink? Yes, it's just harder to get the ink evenly distributed. The brayer delivers an even layer of ink on the styrofoam. Ink is sticky and not meant to be used with a paintbrush so it takes a little more care to get an even coat of ink. Using a stiff brush would work the best. I hope that helps. Linda
