The ASEAN is a community founded on laws and cooperation. It resolves disputes in accordance with universally recognized principles of law, such as the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
The ASEAN seeks to share best practices in implementing safety of navigation instruments, as well as establishing the ASEAN Coast Guard Forum. To further utilize best practices, the ASEAN aims to develop a protocol of interaction to avoid miscommunication.
The region prevents illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing (IUUF). These forms of fishing damage the biodiversity and life on seas, which makes it an urgent issue that needs proper regulation. This will also protect the seas of member-states, and the rights of legal fishermen.
The ASEAN community aims to strengthen the region's adherence and compliance to international instruments relating to maritime safety and security. This is to assure that our seafarers reach their destinations safely and are protected from external threats, such as piracy and undesirable weather conditions.
Marine life and resources are vital instruments to the everyday life of the people in the region. with this, the ASEAN member-states uphold their commitment into maintaining peace and security, as well as the preservation of maritime resources.
