I find it amazing that people complain about the price of the Polys. They think the Polys are expensive compared to the Prismas. News flash people: You'll be spending more money on your Prismas vs. the Polys. Why? Because you'll go through your Prismas faster than the Polys. I watched an interesting video where the person (SuperRaeDizzle) took 1 Prisma and colored blank sheets of paper (standard size 8.5 x 11}. She wanted to know how many pages she could color with 1 pencil. With the Prisma, she managed to color 4.5 pages. With the Poly, she colored 31 pages. Yeah, people, for every 1 Poly, you'll need 7.5 Prismas. Now break it down into money and you tell me which one is truly the more expensive one.

Polychromos are more expensive but they have better value than prismas, I'm a beginner and have been using prismas but not I switched to polys and I just love how infinitely you can layer them without having a wax build up and I love the details I can get and also you can get more depth in your work than what you get on prismas. With Polys you can also work continuously without sharpening your pencils once in a while. My prismas really don't last long like my polys. Well I'm simply saying I super love the switch. As a beginner I fell in love with my polys but I still have my prismas though cause I'm not using them that much anymore since I had my polys.

After deliberating over which pencils to buy for such a long time, I decided to go with Polychromos. The reason for this choice was that I was able to get a set of 36 at a discounted price because the tin was slightly damaged. After watching your very informative video, I’m so glad I came home with the Polychromos! I love them!
@annetteatkins7164
4 жыл бұрын
One thing I would add to the comparison, is the transparency. Polychromos are more transparent then Prismacolors. I first watched this video about two years ago, and ultimately bought the full set of 120 Polychromos. But then I started doing some work on black paper. I just couldn’t get the color density I wanted, and the problem was apparently related to how transparent the colors are: too much of the black paper was showing through. So now I’ve invested in a set of 150 Prismacolors. They have a greater opacity and for this type of art, that was important.

I have a set of both. One great wax set (prismas) and one AMAZING oil set. But I am an oil based girl at heart. I really love layering slowly with a strong point. Aside from Poly's I have like 4 sets of some amazing less expensive oil pencils. But I realize that it's easier to make a great budget oil pencil versus a wax one because I cannot find a GOOD budget wax pencil. Once my prismas are almost gone I won't repurchase as much as I love them. I'll get the Caran dache luminance or the Derwent Lightfast. Both oil and wax types have their uses which are completely different. I LOVE using polychromos and prismas together. It's a match made in heaven.

I've had the faber castells for years, and I just recently got the prismacolors. It honestly comes down to preference. I prefer the prismacolors because I like the softer lead, they are easier to blend and have a closer consistency to pastels. The only problem is that they wear down fast because of how soft they are. The faber castells are a pretty hard lead, so they don't need to be sharpened nearly as much and last a lot longer. You can definitely still blend them and the pigments are still really good, I just prefer the pigment in the prismacolors and I love the softer lead.

I have the 150 set of Prismacolor and only 12 of the Polys. I am happy with my Prismas. One of the biggest things I like is the color is pretty clearly printed on, whereas it is hard to read on Polys and Luminance, both of which are great pencils otherwise. The color so clear on Prismas makes it easy to sort and select pencils for projects.

I do like Prismacolor pencils, and still have most of an older set bought in the early 1990s for my aunt, who later gave them to me. I don’t buy them anymore because they seem to have quality issues. Either way, I rarely use colored pencils so it doesn’t matter all that much!

Love the video! Personally, I prefer Polys because they last longer (in my experience). Plus Prismas get a clear, hard wax buildup when you add lots of layers that make it hard to blend and looks super shiny. That said, I think Prismas DO have great pigmentation and are awesome for learning techniques with. I gave some to my niece (an aspiring artist) and she loves them.

Prisma Colors are a) badly manufactured, b) prone to breaking, and c) known for wax bloom. Considering the Prisma Colors have to be imported to my country they are almost as expensive as the Polychromos.. so no point in getting them unless the quality issues will be fixed at some point. So, if you can afford it (this list is in order of "expensive" to "seems like I won't be eating this month"): Oil based --> Polychromos Wax based --> Caran d'ache Luminance (hardly any wax bloom and extremely lightfast) Mixed --> Holbein

Saeyoung Choi you could look up lightfastness on the materials you do have access to maybe? Or just be careful it isn't exposed to light for extended periods of time if you aren't able to find any lightfast cheap materials? All my cheaper things are in my sketchbooks so they seem alright due to not sitting in the sun/light much. They're only exposed when I worked on them and then when I show it to anyone. I bought the Prismacolors because of the price and because I had heard that they were the best colored pencils you could buy unless you were a professional artist. I hadn't heard anything at all about the Faber Castells. I tend to hold my pencils and pens way too tightly and my hand always hurts quickly. I also break leads all the time, so I go through pencils pretty quickly and this is very expensive. Hi, Kirsty and your legion of followers! Cheers for this really useful breakdown of comparative performance; very informative as always. I personally have a silly amount (several hundred pencils and probably the whole range or most) of Prismacolours and also a whole batch of Laurentian included (not sure if they are well known, but I bought a job lot - probably similar to another of your vids I noticed!) which are comparable with Prisma/Karismacolour in most aspects. Really useful tips and insights here; especially the note about colour fastness and/or fading with the Prismas. Guess I should invest in some Fabers and also a few Caran D'ache to get optimum quality! Obviously, not necessary for an amateur, but getting going again as a pro, so invaluable advice. Thanks so much for all of your vids; massively impressive and helping to teach an old dog new tricks is no small achievement for a young artist. Just fabulous, so thank you so much and please keep on smashing it with the best art tutorials on KZitem....! (P.S: yeah; I have to agree with the comments regarding the creepy post about your looks: disrespectful, sexist and inappropriate. Probably meant well, but this is not the 1950s, mate!) 3:25: you could also use nail polish remover because it’s got alcohol or acetone. All I know is that it works very well with blending.

I have a wish list for Luminance pencils! I have used some that a friend has a set, they are one of the best brands and pencils are quality to be sure! I enjoyed using them! I know that they have the best ratings too. You present your ideas wonderfully! Thank you for sharing your expertise with us. I have a lot of different brands and they all work pretty well, I believe that the Artist is responsible for the quality of the pictures, longevity is a concern when selling artwork so be sure to check your lightfast rating on each pencil across all brands!

I'm using Prismacolor and that's what I've noticed also. So a good suggestion is to use both Prisma and Faber to maximize the full potential output of your work? And also I find Prisma annoying for its physical quality, the carbon is not centered 50% of the 120. I have heard that Faber is way better on the physical quality of the pencil.

My favourites are the polychromos, and the caran d'ache pablos - haven't tried luminance just yet as they are a lot more expensive and I stopped taking commissions for a while now. Prismacolour, I do not have expereince either, I am hesitating to try as many artists complain about them breaking easily and not being able to sharp them properly - and I am not so very gentle on my pencils lol. But this is a great video, thank you for sharing all these, I have been looking for a video like this ages ago, happy I found your channel. :)

I have been using polychromos since college and wouldn't change I love the colour pay off I get with them and I haven't had a new set since then. I do look at other channels and I do think people like what they want to like and I just used a lot of Faber castell drawing pens too

I would like to add something about the solvent and the price. Zest-it can be used for thinning oil(paint), but you have to have enough ‘oil’ to thin. With the prisma’s you get lots of wax in two layers so Zest-It has more oil to thin and therefor you get the fibrant colour. With the polychromos you have to build up way more layers to ‘produce’ more oil. If you have two layers Poly on your paper, you won’t get the same fibrant colour you got with the Prisma. Zest-it is also citrus-based and belongs to the group of turpentine’s. It is less ‘powerful’ than the group White Spirit. Gamsol is a save alternative White Spirit and it works great with the polychromos. The price of the pencils depends on where you order it from. Currently the Prisma’s are more expensive than the Polychromos. If I would buy the Prisma 150, I have to pay €250,- Because the Prisma’s comes from the US you have high shippingcosts (and taxes). The set of 120 polychromos currently costs €167,- They are made in Germany. So for me, in Europe, the poly’s are less expensive than Prisma.

Ok, I know you are a teaching artist(at least you help us here)... but did you know how incredible your face is designed? Your eyes and facial structure is so fluid and fixed at the same time. Incredible symmetry, and separation along with he mixing of curves, and lines. Fantastic! I guess I’m just trying to point out to you how simply gorgeous you are... lovely!

Hey Kirsty...You've not reviewed the Holbeins. They're up there with the best. Slightly different results as they're oil based, but they're my favourites. They don't crumble and break like the Prismacolors, (but I do love them nonetheless). Okay. the Prismacolors are waxed based unlike the Holbeins. But the Holbeins are very creamy and keep the sharpness. What do you think? Do they compare well with what you like most?

If you must know, I’m a patreon member! Been watching your regular fast videos on KZitem, the. About a month I’m a half ago, I finally decided to become a member. Learned a lot with how you color hair(via Noah schnapps) hair. And using burnt ochre for shading?..brilliant. First time I learned that brown can be used as shading(even on white skin)! I can’t remember from who, but I was taken aback. And it REALLY looks like shade on a white persons face. Which is still shocking till this day. And shading on brown, same concept, but using a darker version of that color. All in all, I still watching your hair videos on patreon(mostly)...noah schnapps face coloring over and over again.

Wax bloom isnt a problem if you spray your final work with a fixative. Also you can get uv protective fuxative to help with that colorfastness problem .
