It's always pleasing to see black people drawn accurately and beautifully in an anime-esque style, especially when people seem convinced that the common misguided caricatures in anime are 'just how the style looks.'

We are so happy you picked up on this. It was a lot of work and we fought hard to ensure that people could have an example of what it should look like to capture Black beauty the way it should be. We're so grateful for the hard work and effort of Powerhouse Animation studios to keep trying until they got it. It's possible--and we hope this leads the way for how to more consciously represent all cultures of color. 😊

Am I the only one who saw like a message in this? Like, the water is society and that was the reason why Jay said "It was like he was meant for the water" saying that his brother was accepted in society since he wasn't "like him" a queer poc! The boy that helped him out to face his fear was also a queer poc that has gone through the phase of being afraid of the water and knew what it was like so he helped Jay out to let him slowly accept the fact that he can live comfortably in society and that it wasn't all bad when you had the right people by your side❤
@Marispider
Жыл бұрын
Yes!! I'm rewatching this and just noticed that the book Jay was reading is about a scientist trying to figure out how to "walk on water" too - I think that'd mean being able to go through society and survive it without really being a part of it or needing to know "how to swim" through it. But the whole point of going to the pool IS diving in and getting wet, not just walking over the water to get to the other side. And the whole point of life isn't just walking over it and getting to the other side, it's getting to know people, do things, have fun even if you make some mistakes... "it's about the journey, not the destination," that sort of thing. I just love it sm

it's also great that he got out of the water to relax or calm down and be there with/for Justin, cos it's always okay to get away from society for a little while when things gets overwhelming. We deserve to see ourselves, to know that we exist, we matter, and that there are tons of queer creatives of color committed to making sure more work exists like this. Thank you sharing this story. I can’t wait to see more. My partner is a person of color, and he doesn’t get the same treatment I do as a queer person. I have to do all the family business so he doesn’t get harassed at the bank or the grocery store. I know one day, if we keep fighting, these injustices will not pass on to the future generations. I am looking forward to seeing more representation and normalizing of queer people across the world.

This was so cute and nostalgic at the same time! The community pools and fear and embarrassment as a kid… the story was so cute and I can’t wait for a final animation! 🫶

I LOVE THE YOU ANIMATED IT, like shows the rough draft yet gives us the entire picture and plot of it. And it already opened up about someone drowning or getting hurt in which it shows why he is so afraid to jump in, and with a traumatic experience like that I would to. And it kinda shows how the main boy doesn’t necessarily like the orange one. Even if he doesn’t say it. I AM SO READY TO HEAR MORE FROM THIS! Please keep me updated!

I remember when black panther came out, but before it felt like I was asking for too much to have a strong black lead as a superhero. I felt the same way when I started watching queer films. I’m 17 and know how helpful this will be for queer black kids

This really is important to hear. When we committed to making this, it was because we literally didn't have an example of anything out there in the world like it. And as two people who grew up loving animation, we couldn't believe there was no Black, queer animated anything that centered around a character like this. We've been working almost three years to bring this to life, and we're still at it. But we believe it's worth the big ask--comments like yours remind us that this has all been worth it!

You don’t understand how happy this makes me as a black trans gay guy. Theres hardly any black queer characters in media, and when they are they’re usually stereotypes, and never in animation. Finally just regular guys who happen to be gay and black, and in my favorite medium, animation! (:

Giving this some engagement because it deserves it. The story has a lot of emotional nuance to me. I think talking about self acceptance and mental health can be very tricky because within the bounds of a story it can give to the viewer the false impression that one singular sequence of events somehow magically made it all better for the character, and it's just not truthfull to how things are when you're struggling. To me this felt like this is less that, and more of a defining moment. Jay finally feels understood and supported enough to take steps towards accepting himself and opening up to people. That's beautiful.
@prittynotpretty
Жыл бұрын
Exactly! We wanted to be very intentional about that very nuance. Mental health is a process, a journey--one that can absolutely be impacted by radical acceptance, affirmation--among other things. No magical solutions here, just one powerful example of what being fully seen can do. As you said, a defining moment. The novel goes into much more detail and depth about what these type of experiences mean for Jay and his community. So grateful for this comment 🙂

10:06 💀💀💀 LMAO. This animatic is so good by the way! I like the sounds of the environment and the water. It feels like I'm in the scene with them💞 I wonder if them passing flowers to each other was also a small reference to Hippies and Flower Power? Ik it had something to do with trust, but I just got reminded of that, y'know? Anyhow, lovely video!

I like this sort of thing at least the emotional aspect of it since in most scenarios with men talking to other men, being vulnerable, saying how they feel about things, usually guys just write this stuff off as being weak or other terrible terms (unless in sarcastic way) that showing the more emotional side of themselves is bad/ too wierd. I don't know about the book though this animatic to me at least shows some boys just trying to understand the world around them though one is shy and is more emotionally intelligent than the others. Reading some of the comments this is a queer story. Maybe I am reading this wrong but, this is so sweet. Hope you guys get the funds for this project. This vid was in my recommended's, glad I came across this.

Thanks so much for your note. In fact, it's the book that inspired the development of this animation because the novel really shows how vulnerability among men and diverse genders embodiments is a strength. And it does so with a level of audacity that you never feel like it is something that shouldn't be allowed. It's why we worked so hard to convey this in the animation. This is just as snapshot of the full world that was conveyed in the novel. But we're happy to see you picked up on it. And those lessons aren't just for queer people, it's for all of us. Only then can we heal, together. If you're interested in pre-ordering the novel, you can do so here: prittythenovel.com/bookshoppreorder
