I knew Mr. Wayne Martin as a teenager and young adult in Los Angeles. I too was a huge Judy Garland fan and he was a kind friend to all of us. Perhaps he never grew up himself. If you loved Judy, he was the man to know! I still have photos of me as a teen where I'm actually wearing Judy's clothes! She had GIVEN him so many things! They were both true friends. I'm convinced he was harmless and sincerely cared for Judy. They were both in need of so much, both so alone & unhappy. Be kind, folks.

I’m only 18 years old and grew up with wizard of oz and always loved Dorothy (Judy garland) and as I grew older I realized the tragic life she had, I wish I could go back in time and help her, it’s so sad, and through her recordings, movie(s), and singing I’ve taken quite a liking to her, I’m sorry Judy, I wish things could have been different, she didn’t deserve any of the tough and terrible things that were thrown at her so to speak. This is despicable. Wayne was a fan who amassed a large collection of Garland memorabilia. He had no right to betray her by invading her privacy and recording her conversations without her knowledge. He recorded her on more than one occasion. What was the reason? He wasn't a writer or a journalist. No. He wanted to show his friends how special he was because Judy was his "friend" and he could prove it by playing these tapes. Gee whiz, he had the phone number of a Hollywood star! She was open, trusting, and friendly to him....and he betrayed her trust. He may have meant well but he sounds like a dizzy, old queen to me. Gossiping like he was in some menopausal high school...(Wayne) " Judy, Nancy is saying things about you..." "What is she saying"? (Judy), "I'd rather not say (Wayne). Pathetic.

Sad that Garland was reduced to confiding in obsessed, unstable fans operating outside the realms of basic trust and privacy. This person was stirring-up drama and gossip that could not have been healthy for the fragile Garland to hear in any context. The mere fact that he recorded her without her knowledge is an egregious betrayal.

@sissillian1 I totally agree with your assessment of this bottom feeder. Judy was taken in because she really must have been impressed with Wayne's 'devotion". It's goodthat Judy tells him she didnt want to hear him complain because she had her own issues going on. I wish I lived back then & could've helped her with these guttersnipes. She really needed friends & hoped that she could have trusted them & by these calls, she really was unaware of these calls. Wayne should have been arrested

You can tell she was not emotionally attached to this guy. But, obviously, he wanted her to be or to at least see him as very important beyond just being her "oldest" fan, as she'd put it. God I don’t believe a person would engage in self-harm, if that was true, in front of someone unless it was to make them hurt as much as they were hurting. They actually want to hurt others. It is rare with people who self-harm. They usually inflict the pain inward. There are others who knew Judy who also came out and said she did it in front of them, which I find interesting . They would all have to be lying. And they do have a certain motivation for doing that: money. Due to the nature of her life it’d be hard to know who was to be trusted, including her. We will never know. RIP Judy.

If you're calling from Nevada its not illegal, or at least it wasn't the last I heard. Remember the tv show "Crank Yankers"? The calls were made from Nevada -- the actors/actresses (Jimmy Kimmel, Sarah Silverman, Jim Florentine, etc) traveled there to do it. That was one of the reasons why the show didn't last longer: It was kind of a pain in the ass to fly people there to tape the audio for the show. Also, the laws were probably different in those days.
