It’s actually nice that Francis has that “performance obsession” as Jimmy calls it, it adds something to the conversation
@paulhaselton

Some people, myself included, are motivated to cycle for the sensation of speed which is *just* as valid a justification to cycle as any other. Performance oriented products, ideas and mindsets absolutely have their place in cycling. I really want to enjoy this podcast as I thoroughly enjoy everything else that Francis, Jimmi and Emily do and create but this is starting to feel a little too awkward a conversation to be eavesdropping on. If I'm having a conversation with someone and they say "I don't care", as much as Jimmi has been in recent episodes, thats usually my social cue to change the topic of conversation pretty pronto. I fully appreciate it's done to introduce an alternative viewpoint but I don't think it'd quite having the desired effect. I dont want to be the harbinger of negativity but feel this is probably worth mentioning for the sake of (hopefully useful) feedback. Regardless of all that, please keep up the good work, I look forward to every upload.

Winter is a great time to go to the gym and work on strength. Strengthening core and working on flexibility is great for cycling. Working the leg machines to increase strength and doing lighter upper body workouts is also very helpful. You can save the cycling sessions for days when the weather is good. Variety during the year keeps you from getting stale and keeps you motivated to start training on the road come spring. In very snowy areas cross country skiing and snow shoeing will keep you very fit.

Thank you for the good job and passion. The discussion around the tires was getting on my nerves. I think performance matters, always. Even for a city bike, you want a degree of efficiency. If the bike is crap, the experience is not agreable. All my familly is using bikes, my wife is going to the train sation with a 35 old 'allround' bike and if the bike is crap and slow, she'll not like it because the effort will be to much. So for example, I have equiped the bike with "old but descent alu road wheels" I had in stock from my old rim brake bikes and gp5000 all season tires that I bought to a friend at 20€ each. It's making a hudge difference to the previous set-up (heavy wheels and crap tires). She never had a puncture. I don't see the point of buyindg "solid slow crap tires" to make the experience less enjoyable ...

Most people who ride bikes are fine with going slow. If we want to normalize riding bikes as a thing we should do instead of taking a car, more bike companies need to realize the market is THERE for regular people on a bike - on bike trails, on errand runs about town. And more things should prioritize comfort and large gear range so that more people ride.

Problem with airless tires on bikes is always going to be that rider/bike weight is always going to be highly differential which highly impacts ride quality. Manufacturers would have to make different tires and sell them based on weight categories to address this. Not sure how scalable is this.
@Frostbiker
11 ай бұрын
It really depends on how hard it is to install new treads on the airless tire. If it's relatively simple then you can sell them separately, which avoids having to stock all possible combinations of stiffness and tread pattern.

I'm not planning on taking the bike every day, but hoping I can maintain 3 days a week as a minimum. Last winter was fine, though a learning experience. One tumble on ice (despite studs) and lessons learned. Down to minus 10 is fine. Below that is a little unpleasant, no matter what clothing you're wearing. The British winter is just horribly wet. I fat bike in northern Midwest USA. Its cute that you describe England's winter as "grim". Here is the magical "biking down to the -20s F (-30s C)" formula: High percentage (85%+) wool base (& mid layers if below 0d F). Water resistant non-insulated outer layer, this doesn't have to be "bike specific" (and cheaper if you don't), though it shouldn't be baggy. Wool socks and winter riding boots - use SPDs or Crank Brothers pedals as they work better in cold if you need clipless, otherwise just flat pedal it. Wool balaclava - if you need windproof GORE makes a good one. Gloves can be weird, some people need a lot of glove some don't. Wind and waterproof is the key factor there. If above 10d F (-12 C) and not wet, you can go with normal wool winter bike kit (De Marchi) & maybe a down vest.

Do you actually ride in the -30C? I'm a little farther north than you (Manitoba Canada) and I find when it hits -20C nothing works, layering doesn't work, I'm still cold and the bike parts start to not work either. Gears don't want to shift and the (disc) brakes SQUEAL!

Jean 'cutoffs' (shorts from full length jeans with most of the leg-length cut off) are excellent for cycling if worn with padded 'liners'. If you have a leather saddle, where all the seams on the cutoffs come together under the perineum can chafe the saddle, so use a dab of saddle dressing (Brooks Proofide or similar) on the jeans at that spot. As well as being a lot tougher protection than Lycra for shorts, jean shorts have *pockets*...what an incredible invention...so that you can carry things like keys and money etc just like a normal person on your rides.

In winter I ride outside on the mountain bike on the wet days or if there is a high chance ice on the road. On the road bike on the dry sunny days, and we do have them right through winter. I reluctantly get on the turbo maybe 4 or 5 times a year if I've run out of light or if it's super windy perhaps. Luckily it doesn't get super cold here just around zero at its lowest. To stay motivated I do some sort of training plan every winter, I don't really care about the training goals. It's just a way to have some set riding I'm supposed to do on set days, also to have prescribed rest so I don't over do it. I find overdoing it is more of a risk than losing motivation to be honest. Riding around here ( foothills of the Pyrenees) is pretty fun even in winter.

I've been up to 5 hours on it - but usually 35 -100k rides unless I really need the hours. All I want to do is ride my bike too - and don't need anywhere near £100k to do it!

About undetectable motors,, we only think about electric. But we have lots of ways to propel something further. While combustion engines would be really loud and hard to hide, thermal cameras will also detect anomalies like bearings without proper lubrication AND electric motors since they also generate heat. But if you build the frame to hold copious amounts of pressure and then use 3 thousnd psi of air to hit some blades like an air tool? Just redirect the exhaust through some baffles and no noise is made, and no heat is created. Even easier, a long co2 canister on the downtube.

6:50 is there actually a country/nation that says “our roads are very good”? As a collective, I think every country says theirs are the worst..

I have trouble finding the motivation to even take a bike outside during the summer, when it's 97f/36.1c and extremely humid, with no hint of a breeze and for some reason, and for some reason people drive worse when then temps go above 80 where i live. I hate summer so much.

Never been to Mallorca? Go and make a Mallorca cycling series featuring some routes and spots. Get sponsorship from Mallorca Tourism Board (as if they need it) or just Garmin

The Smart tires would be a massive game changer for my e-bike since the rear tire pops like crazy when the pressure gets close to 50PSI (I ride 650x47 at 60PSI) due to the weight

If it's icy; MTB and find a bike park. Four hours around Forest of Dean or Glentress will still get you sweaty in the middle of the Grimdark months

Re: the e-bike road race kinda stuff and having irl power ups, this makes me think of how F1 has DRS and specific zones you can use it in. Would be cool to see a discipline where you can utilize tech or specific rules as “power ups” that can be tactically used. Super league triathlon has the course shortcut and penalty boxes… what could be done similar in our crit world? Interesting topic.

Where I live there's a lot of zero to sub zero weather in the winter. I get on well with Northwave winter shoes but when it's really cold I might even put overshoes or heat inserts inside. I thought Shakedry was discontinued but Gore sent me an email just this week advertising new jackets so perhaps they're back again.

I only commute by bike during the winter as it’s the only way I’m getting mid week rides in, 15km each way is better than nothing at all. Will always get a weekend ride in unless the roads are two icy, as I don’t mind riding in the rain.

I don't ride below 5 C. Not worth the risk. You'll get in a patch of shade, hit some ice and off you go. To be fair, though, where I live I could probably count the number of days where the high is below 5 on one hand, so it's not a big deal. On the other hand, I grew up in Canada and a *lot* of my friends would commute to work by bike at -20 C. The more it goes below freezing, the less slippery the ice is. If it's snow, it's not much more dangerous than riding in sand. The big problem is that brake calipers will get clogged up with snow and ice, so you have to be careful about that.

Great chat Team Cade Media. I'm sure there was a road e bike race before, during, or after this year's Giro. I think eurosport covered it during the giro race when the leaders approached the finish of this road e bike race........anyway have a good weekend, Jimmi, Emily & Francis 👍

You guys have seen the size & felt the weight of E-bike batteries haven't you? it's not the motor that hard to conceal. If it only works for 10 or 15 mins. Do you think roadies are gonna want to haul an extra 4 or 5 lbs for the other 120 miles?

Some years ago there was an i think austrian manufacturer Vivax, that sold tiny motors that fit into a seattube. Very simple setup: they had conical bevel gears on a sleeve that fits a standard shimano 24mm crank axle. Could produce around 80-100w and was surprisingly quiet, if mounted correctly. So motor doping isnt very hard to do, especially in amateur sports, where there are no checks with thermal cameras. Iwouldn't be surprised if there were more people who at least tried it or still using them in races.

Also there would be the option of a transversal flux machine, yes thats the name of it! It basically is a magnatic motor that uses coils and magnets, like used in high speed trains. Lightweight (the wheel manufacturer) has already shown a demo bike called Velocité with coils in the chainstays and magnets in the wheel, that can produce long term 500w!

About the x-ray test and how often it is done. It’s done daily. The ASO has a van with a CT scan following the tour in which they test frames on a daily basis. Several frames are scanned on a daily basis. I assume they are picked random.

TLDR: the nasa tyre will be shit full version: if you can't rely on compressed air for suspension and dampening, these functions must be provided by the structure of the tyre. In the case of the nasa tyre the "structure" is a metal spring in a rubber hose. And no matter how you twist it, if you want dampening, you need a thick rubber, giving you the comfort of thick puncture resistant tyre. If you don't want that, you will be bouncing all over the place like if you fille your tyres with springs. And lets not forget that i can adjust air filled tyres for cyclists of different weight. With the nasa tyres i'd need more or less stiff models depending on the weight of the cyclist. Seriously, for special applications like a freaking rover on another planet, maybe air filled tyres might not be the best options, but for bikes, on earth, they very much are.

Would be great if the spring in the puncture proof tyre could be developed separately as an insert to a normal tyre
