Hi David. Could you do an in-depth video on your template? Specifically, the bussing, labeling and how you set up and bus to a Print track for the mixes and master. I know you've touched on it a little before, but there's a few things that are unclear. I've already added the, sending instruments to a widening bus for automation and that's been very cool and also some parallel 2-bus compression, but I'd like to learn more about your workflow.

So, what's the difference between the "Vocal Crush" and the "Ld Vocal Level", how do they relate??
@TheMixAcademy
Жыл бұрын
Great question. The vocal chain I use starts on an audio track. I route that audio track into 2 busses. The first is parallel compression "Ld Vocal Crush". The audio track and the "Ld Vocal Crush" meet at the "Ld Vocal Level" which I use to automate and send to effects.

Thanks, Michel! By the point the signal has reached the compressor I've already shaped the tone (high-passed and cut lows) so the compressor is already reacting to what I want it to. Great observation, though! I use the high-pass/sidechain on the stereobuss and sometimes with kick or bass but not often on the vocal. Thanks again for watching!

@@TheMixAcademythanks man can you share the settings?
@TheMixAcademy
Жыл бұрын
@@zachpitt9249 I would but I didn’t record it. It’s a feel/taste thing, but slow to medium attack, fast to fast(ish) release. Anywhere from 2-3 db of reduction all the way to 10+ db of reduction. I also like to use a second compressor to smooth things out. Sometimes, I’ll even use a parallel chain when recording vocals to deliver a mix ready vocal that sits on top right away. But… I’ll only do that when it’s a hard rock song where the vocal won’t need any dynamics. If there’s a softer section in any song I don’t recommend committing heavy compression as those sections will likely need less to feel more natural. I hope that helps!
