Thanks for the tips, Nickolas. I learned a nice way to fix a badly polarized blue sky. Sometimes one part of the sky is too dark compared to the rest because of using a polarizer. To fix, select the sky with a mask, then intersect with a luminance range. Adjust the range until the darkest part is selected, with feathering. Then just raise the exposure to more closely match the rest of the sky.

I stumbled across your video, just looking for something new... Then you added a few VERY interesting tricks that I could REALLY use... the highlighting one side of the tree, then de-selecting the sky for much better effect!!!!! I SUBSCRIBED because of these tricks!!!!! looking forward to more in the future!!!

I've set up few presets combining the blue color addition to sky with AI filters, hightlights, exposure and WB changes too. Calling them SkyBlue with some gradation (even more highlights down, different 'version of blue' and WB) - it's handy to just assess and pick one as a starting point, especially when the sky is not even like this. Then I sometimes add or intersect with a linear filter if needed - make the top darker/more saturated or tint to magenta or other color to make it more interesting, or just make the preset working only on the top part with gradation to lessen potential haloes etc. Great thing about this approach is you can copy it to other similar images in the series - so if there're 200 of them overcast but with a different portion of the sky, you just make one baseline AI+Blue etc and copy to all before editing them in detail. Speaking of overcast grey days, adding Color Grading - Highlights, Hue 40 and bit of Sat (10-30) adds nice sun-like warm touch to the image with 'fake blue' sky, when it fits, without touching the individual WB.

Thanks for this video -- I finally understand the literal meaning of "dodge and burn". Great examples; like the technique of assigning attributes to a brush before creating the mask -- very powerful approach. Thanks also for NOT loading this up with pointless audio and video BS that would distract from the quality massage.

I thought these were really solid editing tips. I'm not sure why you call them dirty tricks. Is it just because it's not faithful to the original scene? Neither are dodging and burning in the darkroom. I don't rely on photography to tell the truth but as a tool to show how I felt about the scene. This is art, right? Photography freed painting from representation. Now photography can free itself from representation. But, it's nothing new. Ansel wouldn't feel guilty about using these apps. Why should we?

Could not agree more. I enjoy being a creator. What the eye sees, or the camera captures is a bit of creation on my part, but mostly created by others. What I do with that image from the camera is my personal expression/creation.

Most of the dirty tricks I do already also a neat trick is to pull a flatten radient filter around a setting sun along the horizon and warming it up to get a nice warm glow around the sun adding yellow or orange tones. I did not really like the halo around the tree you created with the forelast gradient raising the exposure around the tree.. I guess I would have removed the sky from that filter to only raise the exposure on the tree itself.

Hi Nikolas, As a "raw" beginner in Lightroom (not in actual RAW photography) I'm very inexperienced in how to apply and use and know when to use masks and the type of masks to use. Do you have a video that takes someone like me through the journey via a slow step-by-step approach to this effect? Loved the "dirty tricks", but had difficulty following you, fascinating as it was, simply because of my inexperience. Glad to hear from you. Cheers, Fred Jansohn

Interesting video with some good tips. When I watch photographers make the kind of changes that you made, it is like watching an artist painting the scene. I don't have that kind of artistic talent, although I do use some of the tools to make changes. I agree that the tree does look like it has a halo, but that can be fixed, and I'm sure that wasn't your final edit of the photo. I really don't like the jingle type music you use in your video - just my opinion. Anyways, thanks for the tips. I just found your channel, and I will watch more of your videos. Lastly, I wonder if you read the comments? Thanks.

Great video thanks. One thing I find very confusing when I watch these videos is the comment "Bring up the blacks" when you move the blacks slider to the right. Unless I'm mistaken moving the blacks slider to the right reduces the blacks by shifting the histogram to the right. "Bringing up the blacks in the scene" which you mention several times is in fact lightening the scene. Am I missing something or is this phrase confusing? Maybe it's because it's the only slider that reduces the effect as you move the slider to the right

Bring up [the exposure of] the blacks. Think of it that way and it works like all the other light sliders in the Light panel.

Actually, if you watch almost any video about one's personal interpretation as to how a process is best performed, you will see this same repetition. It could be how to cook something, how to paint something, how to wax your car... Creators tend to use diminutive terms/phrases like "a little" or "just a bit" to soften their advice or to emphasize that these are subtle inputs (add a bit of salt, press a little softly when applying the wax, etc.). Try it yourself - you will probably do the same thing.

If you have a good grip of your full frame camera and can edit the difference is the right time of day and, most importantly, location. The beginner editing tips in your feed is not the difference.

It's far from dirty tricks. Photographers are doing things nowadays that have nothing to do with reality. 10% of the work is done with the camera on location, and 90% on the computer. 😅

It’s not a good picture anyway. It looks like it was cut and pasted onto the background. The subject is good, but poorly executed and looks like the animal was photo shopped in and it’s all squashed up. Looks like you paid to get into a safari or a zoo
