I have fond memories of Leighford and the many Pacifics that ran on it. I would suggest that sprucing up old RTR is more accessible than old kits as these kits need skills, tools and specialist parts to get going - I applaud your talents - I just could never get these kits to an acceptable running standard and this was not unusual given the number of abandoned projects out there.

would you buy a hornby chinese diecast loco for 350 notes after hornbys class 31 fiasco ?

@@shakeyhandsshedmodelrailwa2494 I Dont know about the Class 31 issues, but I'm very sceptical about CCP derived diecast. I know in O gauge certain manufacturers are working hard to eliminate diecast cancer, but the problem lies in outsourced products from China.

Auctions are a good place to get very cheap kits of all scales. Often from model makers estates, they are rarely popular with auction bidders.

I got a completed Wills GWR King for £65 in a train shop, where they didn’t know it’s value. The paint job is about the best I’ve seen. It wouldn’t go round curves so I took it into Peters Spares, they said it’ll only run on 4th radius (so I’ll have to change my layout). Also they said they don’t service kit built locos. Just a hint that kit-built is quite specialised.

beautiful A4 , sadly todays model railways are mostly over inflated cheap Chinese tat ,, they are a far cry from going to shows in the 90s and watching guys building brass kit locos ,, today they are ecstatic sliding 20 quids worth of loco out of a box after handing over 300 quid for it ,, the heads of the model companies are the finest snake oil sellers in the world

Overpriced? Absolutely. Tat? Definitely not. Make no mistake the standard of current RTR models is nothing short of breathtaking they truly are beautifully crafted pieces. Just not worth the ridiculous prices manufacturers are demanding

@@shakeyhandsshedmodelrailwa2494 and the even shorter answer to your entire argument: eBay. Most of hornbys toolings haven't changed since pre 2010. Why would I buy a new product for £250+ when I can buy what is quite literally, no hyperbole, the exact same product in a slightly older box on eBay for less than 100. If you insist on owning the newest most modern most up to date version of *anything* .. well.. surprise!! It's expensive. That's not model railways, that's life.
