Blocking is suppose to be perpendicular to the joist while being on the same axis. This saves material and spreads the stress of weight throughout the deck. What they're doing will over time (and not a lot of it) rot around the screws eventually dropping the "blocking". Eliminating the distribution of stress between each joist and could eventually lead to a collapse.

Anyone know why the wood is going in between and only being supported by the screws ? Is there a layer going on top in the opposite direction ?

What? Terrible. U leave 4 holes on every board. Do it right and block it from underneath.

I’ve never built something like this before, but since every decent setup I’ve ever seen has the boards supported by other wood and not just nails, I’m gonna say this will look good for about a year or so 😛

Yeah and where is the water supposed to go. Blocking goes perpendicular to the joice and not flat. What they did there is only Blocking the top and not the bottom. Plus it will be the first place to rot and warp and create issues because of laziness and lack of experience. Enjoy your time taking your decking up and re-blocking it the correct way when you are called back because of issues or your boss sees it. Primary reason why you can't leave rookies or go-fors alone. Common sense and experience goes a long way. Take the extra couple of minutes to do it correctly the first time and you will save money, time and stress. Lazy, lazy and don't have a clue as to what they are doing wrong. Lol. People like that give carpenters and framers a bad name. If you aren't sure, ask, Please ¡!!!!! Ps. The funny thing is that his boss is probably going to duct his pay for the cost of fixing his mistakes. 😅😂

Good work here.... To all the "i dont know why they do that" blah blah ... shut up...Theres a perfectly good reason.... They lay a board perpendicular to the decking as to not have two boards come together and make a "butt joint", thus removing the eyesore gap that WILL happen with expansion/contraction...... Also, thats pretty cool you guys pre-treated / stained the framing... Quality.

This kind of crap is why we have failing standards and infrastructure and crap that falls apart way before it’s time. Not just here but world wide. The finished product is shit when the standards constantly fall. Just because it “Works” doesn’t mean it will last. And also doesn’t mean it will be right either. Using your caveman eyeball and a few screws to hold the board in place doesn’t mean it will be secure, level, even or balanced in the end. This short cuts are the very reason why shit falls apart and hurts people. 🙄

Sounds like everyone is a master deck builder here in the comments, instead of just saying “it’s bad” somebody explain to me why it’s bad cause I have no idea and I’m quite curious. I’ve heard it’s a flashing issue with water settling but from what I can tell, flashing goes on last, beneath the final decking and before the final decking

All the other obvious issies aside, they better bet usung some nails with all thise screws. Screws snap with expansion and contraction of wood, and flexing of the framing....not likely on that abomination....but if they screwed the rest of the framing....i mean, i dont see hangers....and is that ledger not attached?

John I think gramma said she wanted the final deck woods contrary going out from the house. Yes Bill that's why said in the beginning we need the joist going the other way. Uuuh well mmmm you see uuuh I was trying to save her $40, you see if we put the wood between the joists. We won't need so many. .. John you know joists support is overrated anyways.

I’m willing to bet those two guys are a couple of those that say “i work smarter, not harder”. I don’t know if it’s a coincidence or it’s just a fact. But those “work smarter, not harder” guys are always the ones that always do a crappy job and always leave work incomplete,or worse yet! They cut all the corners possible to avoid the labor that the job requieres. I mean! Doing unnecessary holes and breaking the seal of the wood is a no brainer. At least if they were to play it off with bathroom caulk, you’ll be like”oh,all right,at least they played it off and sealed the extra unnecessary holes”.😂😂😂😂😂😂

Blocking goes perpendicular between the joists to keep the framing from falling over. I’m honestly not sure why he installed that board how and where he did unless it’s a nailer to do something fancy with the deck boards. It’s going to collect dirt, leaves, bugs and rain water from the gaps in the decking over it and rot away in a short time.

So unnecessary to put all those holes in that wood just to get it to fit right. Whoever this contractor is needs to either fire these two idiots or have his license revoked. That deck is going to fail miserably.

Lol the comments acting like it's not pressure treated lumber it'll last 10 times longer then most things they build with a little vycor/grace it'll last a life time.most composite decking requires this where ever you plan to put an accent board. But most people don't read install specs for the material they use.

So the framing is not supporting the deck surface - only the screws are, it will accelerate rotting, this "style" only works for every second board, and I'm sure you have failed every code, did I miss anything?

That's so foolish. Now the load applied to any of the planking will be directed downwards onto perpendicular screws, instead of being directed onto the floor joist directly downwards and with no actual load being carried by the fasteners. You know, as we've been doing it for centuries because load force is an ancient knowledge that isn't worth trying to re-invent.

Um, that is not how you do blocking. And it is certainly not advised for strength or drainage.

Bad idea! I was a fence and deck contractor for over 20 years, this is NOT how it's done. The only thing this is "blocking" is the rain from properly draining. Blocking is supposed to be vertical for a reason. What they're doing here will not pass inspection!

What about the braces that go between the boards to make them stronger and able to support weight or is this one of those you get what you pay for and you have 2 options cheap fast and will last a few years or expensive and takes time but it will be standing when the house it’s attached to is long gone 🤦🏻♂️
