This is how it goes Mike Long is playing Prosperity/Bloom combo, which use 4 Prosperity, 4 Squandered Ressources and 4 Cadaverous Bloomcards to generate infinite mana for his single Drain Life. Most deck play 3-4 Drain Life, but Long has only 1 Drain Life. This is the only win condition. Mark Justice is playing a BR Aggro/Discard. Justice best card against Long are his 4 Coercion main deck, to break the combo. He don’t know Long play only 1 Drain Life. At 1:20, Justice cast Coercion. The hand is good, Justice has to think hard . At 1:57 Mike Long pick Justice Shadow Guildmage , put it back with his hand hiding it and say ``Quick quizz; What’s the flavor text on Shadow Guildmage?`` Justice is like WTF??`` Long is trying to set him off-balance. At 16:50, Long must win or die this turn. With the Bloom, he discard his only Drain Life to generate mana and make sure Justice see it. He try to make Justice concede by bluffing he have the combo coming. It doesn’t work and he fizzle. But Justice think Long have multiple Drain. Game 2 - Long is drumming on the table really loudly. At 23:10, he say ``You should just concede`` At 23:20, he punch the library for the top deck, he show his two Prosperity and say ``You're dead`` Justice take the bluff and concede, even if Long has no Drain Life in hand 48:22 Final match ; Justice cast Coercion. Long only Drain Life in his hand, but because of the bluff in game 1, Justice think he have other Drain. Justice take a long time thinking about it. At 48:50 Long say; ``You got a chance honey.`` Minute later, Justice still haven’t make his choice. Long drink his can of Coke. At 50:23 Justice think Drain Life is a bait and pick the Cadaverous Bloom instead. At 59:50 Long go for the kill, empty his whole deck to show he only had 1 Drain and win the Pro Tour.

In the road to the 1999 worlds video, Jon finkel playing mono blue control also did not shuffle after his impulse, the rule was dubbed a printing error and c hanged. It was used that way in tournaments back in 1997. Rules were different back then, zero life, still alive till the end of turn and drain life brings it back up to high levels when turn is done. Even after 6 th edition changed the rules, pros bloom survived with city of solitude and abeyance to stop opponents from casting kill spells or counters on the active players turn. Great video on the magic of pros bloom, a really cool combo deck.

Mark Justice is one of the best MTG players of all time from the early days. Mike Long quickly built a reputation among MTG players for being one of the most-innovative deck designers as well as deck-players of all time, while trying NOT to suggest all his "skill" came by his ruthless cheating throughout his career. Justice would go on to play Poker and Blackjack with with John Finkel and other MTG pros during the late 90s. This specific Pro Tour match is one of the major reasons why MTG decided to start providing the Top 8 with their opponent's decklists. They felt Justice should have won through skill by simply knowing his opponent only had a single Drain Life. While others might call Mike Long's decision to only need one AND his ability to bluff that he ran multiples, ultimately it's a weakness of the deck that he chose to run for efficiency reasons when he realistically could have run more. As someone who has played vintage for a long time, Vintage decks have had to learn to play 4 "outs" or "victory conditions" because for a long time when Mishra's Workshop and blue decks picked back up in popularity around 2002, Jester's Mask and Extract would see random play and getting killed by a single card is never fun. While Extract is far weaker of a choice, I've seen in in sideboards as 1-of with U/b/x decks because a tutor can grab it early if you've been able to verify the opponent only runs a signle win-con.

@@TeambrutalDeluxe Long's win is courtesy of some pretty dirty tricks, but the game isn't decided by cheating here - it's all head games, not Long palming a Prosperity to sneak in when he needed one or garden-variety dodgy shuffling (as he received penalties for on other occasions). It's a legendary game precisely because it wasn't decided by the use or misuse of cards, but by a player taking an insanely risky and outside-the-box route to outwit his opponent. It's the maxim of "play like you always have the answer" taken to its logical conclusion and proof that Magic isn't all down to scrutinizing deck matchups and playtesting 'til your eyes bleed.

I find it weird that everyones calling these guys cheaters etc. back then there was basic tournament rules and weren't very strict like that. These games were tournaments yes but had only been out for couple years. Magic didnt hae the huge rule set it has now. Guys need to stop comparing 2016 rules and regulations with rules and regulations from over twenty years ago.

not only that, a huge population of the top players cheated. I remember george baxter saying stupor read target player discards a card at random and forgets to discard a card, or ollie rade with reading his lands by the back which is how he got away with so few lands at pt 3. I hate reading how everyone wants to nail long to a cross (he was a shit) but its so overblown to how many where out there and how lax the rules were.

I mean, there was some legitimate trickery going on (someone more observant than I noticed Long using the "oh my God, am I at 12!?" bit to misdirect Justice into thinking he had 1 more life than he actually did, and the infamous palmed Prosperity can't really be read as anything but a plot to sneak the card into his hand when he needed it). I agree that people getting outraged over cheating in a tournament that happened 24 years ago is silly and the player tactics that made this match famous are way more important, but there was never a time when full-blown sleight-of-hand trickery was allowed or tolerated under Magic rules. That's why Long got a match loss when they caught him with the aforementioned palmed Prosperity.

I’m so glad damage on the stack was done away with, Long would have never gotten away with this bullshit he pulled off here

Damage on the stack was actually introduced in 1999 with the release of the sixth edition. I think what you're referring to is being able to play something in response with 0 or less life and not losing the game rightaway. But either way, it's a good that both things are gone now (even though i liked damage on the stack from a tactical point of view).

I wonder if someone could remake long's deck, obviously updated, to make it vialble in legacy/vintage. I would try however, I don't play either format, let alone, combo is not my style. I wouldn't be able to know where to begin.

AnubisApprentice I played this deck a lot back when it was legal, mainly because of Long. The deck sadly wouldn't work as well now as it did then because at that time you were able to drop below zero and not die until the end of your turn. That is one of the reasons he isn't able to burn Long out of the game. Another reason is it would just be really slow in comparrison to other legacy combo decks. Other then that it is still a really fun skill intensive deck to play.

Team Magikarp Thanks, for letting me know this, I started playing at this point, and after thinking about it, I realized that about the life. Also I don't know vintage/legacy as well as I should. I am just not interested in that format, to rich for my blood. I will stick to modern, lol "the poor man's legacy/vintage".

Didn't ProsBloom only run 1 Drain Life? Why on earth wouldn't you take it?
@CGoody5642

Sam Scott elven cache reclaims it. No one would think to do so, because who is going to remove he backup win con? Apparently Mike. Still, it tends to be more disruptive to stop the combo from going off, rather than taking their win con and hoping they don't have a backup plan when they obviously can combo to that point.

Generates mana with cadadervous bloom and squandered resources, draws a bunchnof cards with prosperity and infernal contract then, uses the bloom to make a ton of mana for a lethal drain life.

48:23 Why Justice does not discard the only Drain Life in Long's deck????
@TheCaptainObvious2
8 жыл бұрын
Cause long had elven cache maindeck, which would let him get it back and bloom lets him rip through his deck pretty good which he then did anyways. But long had sided out the cache so if he wouldve taken it he would´ve won the game
@joyfulwaffle7094

I think the answer is that in game one long discarded the drain to bloom in game one, which he only normally would have done if he had another. In actuality he did this as a mind trick, but it made justice think he had more than one drain life so discarding one was pointless because he could find another.
