This is about her moving to California for her music career and her first label dropped her cause “she didn’t go far enough” and then she went home and then came back and now she’s literally your favorite artist’s favorite artist boy did they mess that one up
@stevejohnson4144

This timeline often gets messed up because the lyrics fit in too perfectly with her eventual story. “California” was released in May 2020, while she was still with Atlantic Records. She was dropped in August 2020. It ties in her general non-success up to that point, but it’s not a direct response to being dropped.

This is one of my favorites of hers, and I love every one of her songs. The lyricism and storytelling is so beautifully done. “I trade amber clay roads for the sea foam and the endless sun rays” paints such a visual contrast of where she came from and where she went. Then “Come get me out of California, no leaves are brown” as a contrast to The Mamas and the Papas “California Dreamin’” lyric “All the leaves are brown”. The drums are definitely more prominent in the album version, but still softened, and it almost feels like it adds some urgency to the feeling of needing to get out. I’ll be interested to see your take on it if you react to the album version.

Alanis. All uncanny and singular performers, and all with some great songs to their credit. But here's one big difference. Chappell and Dan Nigro's songwriting is consistently great in ways none of her legendary predecessors have ever gotten close to. "No skips" is such an understatement it's nearly an insult. And other difference is Chappell's special gift, of writing incredibly exuberant, FUN songs, partying songs, and slipping in to them, often unnoticed, powerful pathos and heartbreak.

I mean the vast majority of channels can't do it because they get slapped with a copyright strike... And if you get three copyright strikes your channel gets automatically deleted. So yeah, people try to avoid copyright strikes as much as they possibly can because they can be VERY detrimental... I only know of one other channel who does reactions the way that this guy does reactions... It's a really risky way to do it. 🤷♀️ Which is why most people don't do it this way.

This is also one of my favorite songs by her because of that Tiny Desk performance putting it in a new light for me. It's so refreshing to see someone appreciate the technical ability like you do. The part where you mention loving seeing people doing innovative stuff with their singing - it reminded me of how I felt watching the new video of Raye singing 'It's A Man's Man's Man's World' live at the Montreux Jazz Festival. @@TimWelchVocalStudio My favorite musical moment in this song is the last time she sings “no leaves are brown” after the bridge (at 19.00 in your video). It’s different than all the other times she sings it because she doesn’t go up on “brown”, she stays low. It sounds like the chords behind her would be different, creating a suspended note, but the musicians stop playing. She makes that change entirely with her a cappella voice and then the band comes back in when she resolves the note. It’s amazing arranging and musicianship.

I immediately subscribed, you pointed out all of the beautiful work that blew me away the first time I watched this performance. I feel like this performance of this song particularly is the perfect showcase of why Chappell is now known as "your favorite artist's favorite artist". As an artist myself, I can't help but feel immensely inspired by her. She does *such* an amazing job of taking her audience on a journey - even with her more upbeat tracks on this album, like Naked In Manhattan and HOT TO GO. I love that you also appreciate the orchestra music in her work. This song as well as Picture You, Kaleidoscope and Coffee all have that beautiful movie soundtrack-quality orchestra music. I would love to write a musical with her, or to see her write a movie soundtrack! She is a true vocalist and performance artist - through and through. I really feel that she may be one of the greatest artists of our generation, and I can't wait to see what she comes up with next. I've thought about posting covers of some of her songs from this album because the vocal choices that she makes are very similar to the ones that I love to implement in my vocal work. I'm hesitant though because I haven't really worked on my voice in 3 years, and I feel so out of practice. But it would be so much fun too, so idk!

Tim, at 19:00 you said something meaningful about great singing being "emotional expression" and "being a conduit for what the song is about; what you want people to feel...coming through you and just getting out of the way." True of all great artists, including the best actors. Often it seems like it's the other way around, where a singer doesn't so much respect the song (melody, form, intent) but is determined to make the song all about vocal acrobatics. Great video and love how plugged in you are at each moment; clearly your passion. Anyway, terrific Chappell Roan reaction videos -- keep them coming!

I'd like to add something to your observation on how Chappell was counting the beat to help the band come in at the start of the song. I feel that my be true, but I think there is another reason for it. In some of her early work when she is playing piano and singing she does the same thing, even with no band. So to me it seems she is doing it for her own use. As a totally self taught singer I think she self metronomes when she is a cappella, or moving through a very non-standard beat, to keep herself on mark. You can see that she even seems to be keeping a sub-beat count with her fingers while metering the major. beat with her whole hand. It's an interesting artifact I feel from how she learned to so what she does with her voice, and as a comfortable tool, and one that is a decade old, she still uses it without a second thought. As soon as the instruments started to carry the beat she stopped, but NOT right when they came in but a notable measure after. Probably when she felt comfortable in leaning back into the musics beat guide. But I'll also agree that this is a beautiful gutting song that is delivered so well by her as to pack a much bigger punch. It's very lovely, and in my opinion there are some other cuts on the album (Kaleidoscope) that punch the old feels harder. The Tiny desk arrangement is very very close to the albums, differing in the strings only. And I consider the Desk version superior. The muted Tom-Tom's appear in both, and really add a dynamic element that pulls the listener even deeper. But there you'll discover this eventually when you work your way to the album cuts. I wager you'll also be surprised at how damned close she comes to hitting almost exactly the same when live to her recorded versions. Great review. Thanks for putting the time in.

There are a few people that have started to collect it, but seeing her full development as an artist is still tricky.
