One of the helicopters that sparks interest and imagination is undoubtedly the collapsible Rotorcycle. Small enough when folded to carry in a pod under an aircraft’s wing or on the luggage rack of your car, this contraption becomes a full-sized helicopter in a matter of minutes. The XROE-1 "Rotorcycle" was developed by Hiller Helicopters in the mid-1950s. Saunders Roe, an English aircraft manufacturer, was subsequently contracted to build a handfull more of these Rotorcycles. However, the Rotorcycle never entered military service, as the requirements were canceled before the military tests were completed. Of the 12 Rotorcycles produced in total, 5 are currently part of the collections of aviation museums, and one is privately held. One military version and five civilian models are currently unaccounted for.
This video shows a fascinating air display of a large scale model RC version of the Hiller XROE-1 Rotorcycle at the RC Flying Days 2024 in Loorholz, Switzerland.
