But i wanna point out that many issues where removed in later varients, and that the hull ammo doesn't have to be used, you can, simply just put ammo in the turret compartment. if you didn't know that leopard 2A4 is newer production of leopard 2 that has gunner sight but it was upgraded in Leopard 2A5 that made it on top of the turret which required making whole new turret for leopard 2A4 and in this video which if you didn't know that most modern Leopards are on upgraded Leopard 2 hulls and turrets reasons for this? well mostly it works better have working tank model that can be upgraded in need and be changed like M1 Abrams that was mostly just upgraded to fit newer and powerfull armors and weaponary. speaking of leopards survibility it of course lacks blow out panels on it's hull, but it wasn't made to take on any hits on the hull that why it was made to use any terrain as it's advange over it's enemies. currectly leopard 2A6 which is the newest model of leopard 2 has most protected frontal turret armor well of course it might not be most protected in paper for others to take some secrit documents to get it but it's angled frontal turret armor absorbs incoming APFSDS shells and it makes them lose their momentum and speed to be able to penetrate it's armor which in action makes it almost be invulnerable any used shells in modern tanks of course russians know this and germans know this and are trying to make them more protecting while russians mostly just need bigger gun caliber to pierce it of course this part is just being theore about it just needing bigger gun to pierce it well in my mind no well placed shots on tanks can make them be useless in battle. (speaking of caliber darts just need to be bigger)

4:00 wrong...Pzb 800 was replaced in 1983 with the WBG-X by Zeiss. With the introduction of the Leo 2a5 it again changed to the PERI R17A2 with an inbuild TIM (Thermal Imaging Modul) OPHELIOS-P, later upgraded versions in Germany Canada and Denmark with the ATTICA Sytem ( a5 are no longer in Service in Germany and are stored for possible trials,canibalisation or conversion ). Standard by now for all German MBT´s is by now the PERI R17A3 or the Cassidian Optronics PERI RTWL . So your claim that the optics,rangefinders and thermal sights are 40 years old..is simply bullshit, and a simple Internet research would have given you that information. And the Problems with the 2a4 only consider the turkish ones, they have been told that those where con cepted for early cold war frontal tank batlles and where outdated in every aspect, the turkish goverment is planing to upgrade them since then. later they tried to purchse more modern Leopard variants ,but where denied to do so. the German Government feared they would use it against the Kurds ( wich they are now doing ). since that the turkish are boasting on how about they would make their 2a4 even better than the most advanced 2a7 variants under the branding "Leopard 2 Next Generation" by ASELSAN...wich you guessed it...never happend. and even build their own Version of the Leo (without License or consent from Rheinmetall or the German Government ) . Instead they introduced their "domestic" Altay Tank...wich is basicly a K2 Black Panther with a Leopard 120 mm cannon, engine and transmission..And lastly you left out to mention that the most of the turkish Leo2a4 where destroyed by turkish forces,they where incapacitated in various forms prior, and then destroyed by turkish forces so enemy forces could not salvage them...or from them. must be very convinient to only tell 32% of the facts.

Not much wrong with it? Only one flaw that couldn’t have been solved since the British gave the Germans the Berlington armor layout. The original leopard 2 wasn’t supposed to use composite armor, so when berlington became a factor for it, they would’ve had to completely redesigned the tank in order to fix the hull ammo rack. Anyone who says it’s that major of a weak spot, majority of tanks shown in footage are Turkish (OLDER) Leopard 2’s without Infantry support. If you are wondering, if this thing would to be in active service, you’d bet your ass it would be covered by Panzer Grenadiers. Also majority of NATO designed tanks are meant to sit in a hull down position, engage targets from roughly ~4km out, and be able to fill in holes where needed.
@19Koty96
4 жыл бұрын
The tanks aren't meant to sit anywhere. It is just a simple matter of statistics - hull is generally less likely to be hit, therefor there is less focus on protecting it. It is still a problem however which could be solved in a number of (relatively simple) ways.

@@komradearti9935 if you watch the history of the development of the Yom kippur war, the Leopard 2 was already in development. It wasn't designed to have armor more than 30-45mm, but at extreme angles and multiple layers of steel. With the experience learned from Yom Kippur, the British gave the Germans a license copy of Chobham, aka "Berlington". This was quickly added to the design, which fit it most ways, except for the bottom hull ammo storage. Thus they would've had to completely redesign the tank in order for the ammo to be fully stored in the turret bustle.

@@19Koty96 of course not, but if you know NATO tank doctrines of times of the late cold war, it was designed around being able to take defensive positions, from a hull down position, engage enemies, and fill holes where needed. You missed the main point. If a round can penetrate the armour of the tank, there is NO safe place to be. Yeah the ammo can be ignited, but so what? Look at some footage of ammo penetrating a tank. It was already known around 4 to 3 years ago that the turkish Leopard 2had serious issues in armour protection as it was bitterly complained by the turkish troops. Namely it was about weak/faulty armour but I never understood what really was so until now I could only guess having having a weak roof on the turret (a typical problem for all tanks) as it was used in urban environemet that it was not designed for, but I was only guessing. Now, thanks to your video, it is about the ammo in the hull, weak optics standing proud and other small issues. Basically those are not new issues but can be traced back to the 2nd WW. For me the real problem nowadays is that tanks are encredibly expensive and are forced to do theorical/simulated trials on the armour but never really finding out the weak points only to find out on the battlefields. Why, during the war the Germans took an empty hull and later a turret of a Tiger and blasted to pieces and understood many weak points. I think the Leopard 2 could have avoided those problems or at least mitigated. Mind you it is just my opinion.....

@@komradearti9935 it is almost the same among the the western MBT tanks but according to the video it was the ammo rack next to the driver that it is one of the main weak points of the Leopard 2. In truth the ammo storage on the turret is quite limited and the designers were forced to put additional ammo next to the driver so or the ammo rack is relatively unprotected or it has a relatively thin armour. Again I'm asking why don't they do live tests on empty hulls and turrets to find out the weak points???

First, the Leopard 2 is mostly build on mobility and firepower. Second, that don't must be a disadvantage because the german tactics are sometimes different or used otherwise. (And they are effective by the way.😂) Third, armour packages are available for the Leopard 2. In the army. Fourth, many Leopards gets one of these active protection systems now, and some more armour. Was in the newspaper too. Thats what I know as an ex german soldier. With friends which are still active in the military.

When using examples of tanks blowing up or being destroyed, you tend to use extreme examples like Turkey or Saudi Arabia where the tank is alone or happens to be the only decent vehicle in visual range. I'll agree the ammo stowage is in a terrible place and badly protected.

The hull ammo storage is NOT a huge problem, a small problem at best. Because, you simply dont use it. Thus its mostly a waste of space. It is just too scary for the crew to store any rounds down there. Also that hull storage is NOT acessible during combat, because you have to turn off the turret to get a round out of it. As a commander I would only use the hull ammo storage if I expected a prolonged mission away from friendly support lines with several engagements over an extended period of time, with time in between to shuffle ammo from hull to turret. Any other time, I would store anything else down there but live rounds. Here are some real problems I see... getting hit by a non penetrating round is like being in a car crash, but the crew got zero crash protection. = after a hit, tank is fine but crew is porridge. The huge ass zoom on the sights, great if you want to shoot something 1-3km aways, but it totally sucks for everything else. Having some low level zooms on the sights to switch to would boost situational awareness for the commander and gunner by a multitude. (though I dont know details about the sights of the 2A7V. There is an urban warefare version of the Leo2 though, at least as a prototype.) A tank needs sights and sights are always a weakspot, so unless there are tanks out there that somehow dont have weakspoty sights, I dont see the point there...

If abrams also has a good FCS (fire control system) and also has a room in the turret for Its all ammunition then why leopard 2 has so much space utilitised only for the electronics of its FCS? Can’t we shift all those FCS electronics from the leopard 2’s turret back to its bottom of the turret basket?and then shift all those hull ammunition to the turret back with blast proof doors just like the abrams.
@azrael9016
4 жыл бұрын
Leopard 2 has superior FCS. The new one that is, I think it required way more electronics than what Abrams tank has. Abrams for example has 2nd generation thermal while Leo 2 has 3rd generation with very high resolution with superior range. Leopard 2 used to have hydraulic turret drive and blast doors were not made and when it was removed (since most Leo2s are upgrades of older ones) they couldnt make additional storage with blast doors and they put electronics from FCS inside since there was room for that, putting rounds there without blast doors would just make it easier target to hit and thus render tank useless.
