As someone who has hiked literally hundreds of miles I can tell you a waist strap on your backpack makes a WORLD of difference. You want most of the weight on your hips not your back (I'm guessing they probably didn't have those on old backpacks though). I can also assure you those arrows are going to be SUPER annoying being on your hip and having so much movement but I suppose that could be a trade off of "I can easily get these arrows if I need them for defense quick" vs "it's harder to get them but more comfortable to hike".

Except Geralt wearing two swords in the games is one of deviations from the books, as well as lugging around all his potions and tools. It's really done for gameplays sake, but usually he as alll his monster hunting stuff stored on roach the silver sword is wrapped in cloth the potions kept in a wooden box. When he goes to confront a monster (which are rare enough that he actively has to look for people with monster related problems!!!!) he spefically prepares, drinking the right potions in ADVANCE and taking the necessary tools (silver chain and such) with him. So a book accurate witcher game would be more of a shadow of collosus type of deal ;-)

An adventuring backpack would absolutely need a stomach strap and probably a chest strap. I've done backpacking before and you absolutely do not want the weight all loaded onto your shoulders if you're going to be traveling for a long time. I remember playing Pathfinder and looking at the descriptions for the pack items. The more expensive pack specified that it had a padded stomach strap and that was the first thing I bought when I had the money. Most people's characters are walking around with constantly sore shoulders and bad backs and they don't even know it!

Awesome video and that load-out is cool :) I might add a few things though: - First, as far as survival is concerned using you're blanket to keep water off in most situations is an absolute no, small amounts of water bead off wool but after that it soaks in, wool is still insulating when it's wet although it's not as good, so you would be compromising one of you're most important survival tools because not only would it be less warm, it would also be up to 4 times heavier. Ideally a blanket should be tied up inside a light weight waxed or oilcloth tarp to keep it dry, then when you make camp you can use the tarp as shelter and to protect you're self/you're gear from the wet ground - Second, backpacks are a useful way to carry equipment but there are countless other ways to carry a survival and adventuring, some play much better with weapons/quivers etc... than a backpack, it might be worth looking into the following: traditional bed roll, snapsack (these can be tied easily to the outside of a traditional bed roll), historic aussie swag (as a method of carry not the type of shelter that's referred to as a "swag" today), the bindle (maybe on a spear - just shake the bag off and you're ready to fight) and the horseshoe blanket roll. Also a quick release cord on the straps of what ever it is you use is a must, then in a fight you can drop you're load, this is much more important nearer the end of you're adventure when you're weighed down by 15kg of gold LOL

For reference, Shad, it also wouldn't be uncommon for an adventurer or adventuring party to hire on some porters to carry goods and treasure so they would be able to carry their combat gear and maybe a day or two's worth of rations as you were mentioning. The average cost of hiring such an NPC would generally be 1 Silver Piece per Day. (Standard Wage for an untrained laborer in D&D). Negotiations would likely have it that the porter would be paid upon completion of the adventure they were hired for, or upon reaching either the destination town, or returning to the town the adventurers set out from. From my own perspective and experiences when playing, I'd opt for a backpack simply because I don't have the wealth to procure a pack animal and saddlebags or a carriage and a pair of horses to pull said carriage, though I would only bring one or two weapons as well. (Shortbow and Quiver, and either a Rapier or Longsword, as well as a dagger for utility for a Rogue). Though I do agree, carrying a backpack into a 'dungeon' isn't the ideal choice, unless it is absolutely necessary. Generally you'd want to know what you're dealing with before going in, and then only bring the the necessary equipment and gear, as well as an empty backpack/bag for loot. Hiring a porter (as mentioned above) is a good way for a low-level character who is just starting out on their adventures, to be able to bring everything needed, but not be encumbered by the extra mass and weight of a backpack.

You missed out on carts! Back in the medieval period, if a person had to travel far, and they couldn't either ride on a horse, or bring a pack animal, a cart or a wheelbarrow would be fairly common. Because back then, travelling usually meant trading, and bringing wares was the name of the game; and a hand drawn cart could help you bring heavy things. Of course, most carts that we see now are bulky tough ones, that are heavy to drag. But those were more for heavy produce, or using around the farm. And that's because the light spindly ones, have rotted away. Imagine a cart made with a light weight wicker basket, similar to a baby stroller or a lightweight wheelbarrow. With a drag-along cart, you could even tie it to the waist belt, and have your hands free. You could even turn it upside down, to work as shelter during rainy weather, when sleeping outside. In an adventuring setting, a wicker cart would make sense.

Just gonna tell you right now, you want a strap and buckle across the chest to link the shoulder straps, which will keep them from slipping and destroying your shoulders. If you can also get a backpack with a padded waist belt, that will help transfer more weight from your shoulders to your hips, and reduce shoulder fatigue. Even better yet, build a classic A-frame setup, and mount the bag to it via toggles. I do like backpacks, and my current one is a hunting day-pack (fairly small capacity) that is specially designed to securely hold a scoped rifle or crossbow, and has side mounts to attach a bow and quiver, as well as two spots, one on each hip, to mount a holster (great for hiking around in bear and mountain lion country). Also has an internal frame to spread weight to the hips, and to hang a 3 liter water bag with drinking hose. Good stuff. Also, don't underestimate a good wicker pack. They can do a lot a normal backpack can't. If you want to learn more, I suggest reading Dave Canterbury's 4 volume bushcraft book set. He's sold me on converting my blanket and certain clothing items to wool, as wool is fire retardant, but also retains its insulation properties when drenched. Modern synthetics are impressive, and I still use them a lot, but quality wool is amazing, particularly in cold, wet environments. Fall through the ice, or maybe your boat capsized, and now your gear is soaked and you're about to become hypothermic? Wool will save your ass as you build a fire to dry off, while modern synthetics let you freeze. Cotton also has a good place for head gear, as you can soak it on a hot day and keep your head cool, or use it to filter debris from water before boiling it to purify. Also makes a decent bandage. I guess what I'm getting at is you gotta plan and consider what you may be facing, then select your gear accordingly. There isn't really a universal "the best" choice for gear; you gotta dress for the occasion, as it were.

I recommend a game called Outlast for thinking about adventurer's with backpacks. You have the physically remove the backpack before every fight or it will encumber you. You also can hang stuff off your backpack, most notably a lantern. Micromanaging your food, water, supplies, and loot makes the backpack the most important tool to upgrade throughout the game.

If you look at the history of packs and backpacks used by soldiers across the generations, you will see not only the logistical concerns of moving men and material - but also the concerns of the men who have to move it then fight. The conclusion to carry a ruck to a point, and to drop it in a known location upon enemy contact is consistent with various iterations of pack carry. You can even see cases where designs were made so that a member of a squad could access the pack for supplies such as medical or ammo in case you had to stay in cover and couldn't squirm your way around to open your own pack on your back. The modern modular setup with various small pouches attached across your body is a modern attempt to increase the options of carrying small supplies without having to abandon them in conflict. Even then, larger supplies for estimated outings beyond a few hours or short engagements are still put in large rucksacks which any soldier who has had to do a march can confirm the amount of suck involved. Trying to hit the dirt 100+ lbs on your back because of incoming fire is a fast way to crush your ribs. You're going to drop that off in a fight unless you were ordered to lug it in a position move. Fighting with a sword is a bit different from a modern expectation of using a gun, but whatever an adventurer is carrying with an intention of not dropping - they'll have to train and compensate for its bulk and cumbersomeness. The larger the pack the harder it'll be to fight without dropping it. Carrying packs isn't universal though. In many historical examples soldiers were busy enough with armor, weapons, and marching. Instead they had supply trains of wagons and animals that carried the packs for them. And though armies weren't often taking their fights into caves [unless they were man made in sieges or guerilla fighting], they weren't oft to force their supply wagons and animals to spelunk [in a natural cave with small passages]. You could still get an animal into an enclosed space, for the animal being indoors whether cave or not isn't so different from being in a stable - the problem is if there are stairs or angle of ramps / inclines that might hurt their legs or cause them to trip. Spelunking often results in tight fit crawling even for a person, it's no environment for a horse or donkey to get far if that occurs. If however you do a bit of engineering then you can open up all manner of passages. The Mines of Moria were wide with many flat paths, a horse or donkey would have had no issue navigating - the issue was an animal's sensitivity to danger and the fact that the place reeked of death, balrog, and goblins. If your adventure involves an underground kingdom then so long as the paths are wide, flat, and tall enough there is no issue for horses or donkeys. If you have a more natural cave then it'd be less an issue of an animal fearing a dark dank cave, and more that the animal may not physically be able to enter or has a heart less stout than its rider. Anyone with any sense would hesitate to enter a goblin or kobold den. In some ways animals are smarter than the adventurers dragging them along. If you want to compare historical pack carrying for those expecting to fight, I suggest checking out some military museums such as those for the Marines or Army. Even the Airforce museums I visited will have examples of uniforms and sometimes their soldier's baggage which had its own constraints for size, weight, and what the designers expected the user to experience.

I remember my Waterdeep Dragon Heist character, He was a tabaxi ranger named Graveyard of the Ents (Ent for short). He had a back pack just because that's a given in 5e, it came up once actually in a battle. Ent carried so many weapons that I had to plan out myself how he was going to carry it all. Ents weapons: 1 long sward (Damage type: slashing) 2 short swards (Damage type: piercing) 1 long bow (Damage type: piercing) 1 quiver with 40 arrows (I kept track of them and bought more when they broke or got lost (Yes, I took actions after battles to pick up arrows)) 1 Magic Great Sward (+1) (Bark Thorn was the swards name) (Damage type: slashing) 4 daggers (throwable) (Damage type: piercing) 3 hand axes (throwable) (Damage type: slashing) 3 small hammers (throwable) (Damage type: bludgeoning) 1 standard explores pack. The short swards were carried on his right hip. The long sward on his left hip. The great sward was on his back over his left shoulder. The bow was held with it's quiver on his back over his right shoulder The light hammers and hand axes were spread around his belt The Daggers were attached to the belt across his chest that held his great sward and the back pack just existed. (Rule of cool) Yeah, I could not work out where the pack went. Ent was a very fun character. He was the heart of the party, making all of the moral decisions. The human bard and the tifling trickster cleric were the collective brain of the party, but were always arguing so our party was decidedly bipolar. Ent would be the tiebreaker by picking whichever side he believed was suggesting the "right thing to do," which was usually the trickster cleric oddly enough. (Atka the trickster cleric had morals, unlike our bard) If Ent could not decide he would defer to the half orc barbarian who was the gut of the party. We had a good time... and a great DM.

For picking up loot would perhaps a dump pouch or two on your belt be better? For those that dont know its basically a bag that when not in use folds up real small so it doesnt take up much room on the belt and has very low carry weight but if you find food or supplies you can open it up and drop whatever will fit into it and being carried on your belt would keep the extra weight off your shoulders and you could still carry everyday kit in a backpack if needed

I abused my bag of holding last game, was supposed to be blowing a hole in the bottom of a ship, got distracted by a chest because well, anything could be in there. Turned out it was a lot of gold and gems, so since I had barely utilized the space in my backpack I basically showed the contents to my DM and told him I was going to fill it or get caught trying. Did that, and still blew up the ship. My character has become an exercise in speed, nobody catches me.

Some medieval backpack design have a long leggings down almost to the ground, for a adventurer that a travelling in the wilderness, that design is the most convenient kind of design since you don't have to squat all the way down to wear or release the backpack, especially in combat situations when you need a more agile movement in the short seconds. Storing food in those kind of backpacks can avoid any unwanted situations such as rats or insects infestations (because of the heightened level above ground).

From personal experience camping with a haversack or shoulder bag type thing is only really comfortable for a maximum of three days and even then I use comfortable very lightly even a few pounds on one shoulder will hurt your back after a while. Belt pouches are definitely a great method of weight distribution but only works for a limited amount of gear. One of the best non-backpack methods I’ve come across is the lengthwise blanket roll across the whole body but this can get pretty hot on the trail. I made a wooden frame pack and that is probably the best option for multi day camping which I realize was probably not a very common thing in the time period in question. I made the wooden frame so it can be tucked into a belt for weight distribution which is a game changer for long hikes. An option for carrying loot is making basically a stretcher with two long poles to be carried between two people I’ve done this in the desert with water for extended trips in dry areas and while obviously very encumbering you could reasonably carry a small chest of gold. The over abundance of gold in rpgs is something that should change though it’s boring loot even gems are way more potentially interesting as loot. Speaking on weight, I have been backpacking all my life and do trail work with axes and saws in the backcountry now and consider myself an “ultra-heavy” hiker but anything over 60 lbs is encumbering with modern gear with a pack with a good harness, no hip belt like you’d see in history nearly cuts this number in half over any amount of distance over like a few miles. For ttrpgs I like the way Cairn handles inventory with item slots essentially acting as an hp pool. Grew up playing D&D while backpacking with my family it’s a good light game to bring if you don’t carry rules or just a few reference sheets and some dice.

Everyone has something (not just skills an powers) but no one has everything. ...and it just occurred to me that we could look at what Native Americans, frontier explorers and mountain men of the early Americas carried to see what we would need to carry as well.

Some of those larger modern backpacks can actually be almost less encumbering than smaller ones with the thick padded belts on them. The shoulder straps are often designed only to contact your shoulder in the front with no weight on the shoulders at all.

I thought the (tragically unknown rpg) outward handled this very well with it's backpack system. You had a variety of different types of backpacks, with larger ones restricting speed and movement more than smaller ones. If you were ambushed you could still fight with it on, albeit a bit more sluggishly, and risking damage to your supplies if you were hit in the back. But if you had a spare moment, or anticipated a fight, you could remove it to free up your movement but lose access to any supplies or weapons in/attached to it until you returned for it

I'm in the infantry reserves, and I can attest to a warrior's ability to carry around 40 to 50 lbs of gear in a backpack including rations, water, spare clothes, sleeping gear, a tarp for shelter, along with ammunition and weapons. It's heavy going, but when you're used to it, you are still combat ready.

Just one thing, just PLEASE DO NOT forget the water. If you go traveling (especially while using your own feet to get anywhere) you WILL need water. It is rarely mentioned, but water is MUCH MORE important than food, and you won't always be able to find water just because you are thirsty. PS, I was pretty impressed by the "hook" for the bow.

I'd imagine it be a lot like military rucksacks, if your expecting a fight or get into a fight you leave them behind at a rally point or just drop them and recover them latter. Also wouldn't you unstring your bow if you're travelling? As for backpack/rucksacks you want a strap around your waist to let most the weight rest on your hips
@totallynuts7595

I think the best/most realistic approximation of how an adventurer might travel like would be Geralt, the Witcher. In the books (at least), he really only seems to own his horse, his clothes and swords, maybe a satchel for alchemy purposes and another for food and coin. The man (mutant) could probably survive without food or drink for far longer than an average person, but truth be told, that's pretty much how any lone wanderer kind of adventurer should travel. Equipment aside, a good horse is invaluable to them, and they could have their supplies in the saddlebags. Mages/wizards and others who carry more would probably have to invest in a cart or maybe even a covered wagon, but that slows them down on the road.

Love the work you put into this stuff though, and glad to see your Nail Catch still in action!
@thetalon100

So as a soldier, one thing that we have to look at when we pack our rucks is the speed in which you are to get from point A to point B. Spoiler Warning: I'm *NOT* a combat MOS so if someone wants to add to this for better clarification that would be great. Anyways, getting back to the speed of travel, for the US Army, the light infantry standard for rucking is 12 miles in 3 hours with a 35 pound ruck, or 4 hours with a 45 pound ruck. That is dry weight (so not accounting for your water sources) and also not counting anything you are carrying like your body armor, weapons, ammunition, or things like that. Generally speaking, doctrine has two methods for the use of Rucks, on the march they can be dropped and used as cover to get in firing positions, or once you reach your objective you find a spot to drop and hide your gear before engaging the enemy. At most what you would carry with you into an engagement would be an assault pack (basically a regular backpack) stuffed down with extra ammo, food, water, etc. in case of an extended engagement, but the downside is that is extra weight you are carrying on the march. This is why armies throughout the ages developed logistical systems for armies on the march. From baggage trains and pack animals to QRF Humvees loaded down with pre-loaded magazines and extra fuel and water cans. Combat personnel (or adventurers in this case) need support personnel to handle the mundane things like logistics (and loot in your case) so they can focus on one thing: engaging and defeating the enemy. They will carry as much as they need to on their own, but without a support system they will be extremely limited in their capacity. Good video Shad! Keep up the great work!

A lot of fantasy iv come across get around this with either dimensional storage belts/rings if magic is a thing. If not they use a porter which might carry a single small weapon but their entire purpose is to stay out of the fight and just follow dealing with loot and supplies, with the occasional specialization on utility stuff like traps and lockpick knowledge. iv had a few books that say a good porter is hard to find as without the ability to fight many die, especially since with all that weight you ain't running.

In fantasy world we get the threat of vicious carnivore monsters . These monsters(& certain animals like bears or big cats) might be drawn to the scent of a mule or horse (something a sleeping adventurer won't ever want to encounter at night) . The way one can avoid this is by climbing in trees & sleeping there . But the horse or mule can't climb there. So perhaps that's an interesting utility of backpack ?

Absolutely! I actually commented specifically to say that his videos literally validated some of my own research and logical extrapolation for the heroine in my own fantasy series (who was also a D&D character in a campaign that never got past session 2). He is literally wearing the shabbard, bow, backpack, and quiver the way that I have her designed, mentions the adjustable strap for positioning (which I described specifically in the first book), and mentions having a pack animal, and dropping the pack when in actual combat if needed. I started the first book over two years ago, and all of those design elements were validated in this single video. Heck, the shabbard being adjustable was even an idea I had specifically because I hadn't originally thought of how it would attach (when it was a D&D character) then his OG design validated having a back scabbard, but didn't deal with having a pack or other items on the back as well. I came up with the adjustable strap because it seemed simple enough to make sense, and sure enough, he brought that to life in this video! I'm so giddy right now, having watched this video, and basically seeing the same outfitting my series protagonist wears! It means that it is valid, plus if ever there is a promotional photoshoot, a cosplayer who wanted to play the character, or any future movie or television series... it would be possible to do without redesigning their outfits!

Meaning he spent a hell of a lot of time recovering from lots of damage. Then his party would complain that he was being lazy because he was wounded and even dropped him a few times (it was like the gods got in their heads). He started off as a neutral character, ended up chaotic evil and couldn't even do a decent healing spell. As he wakes up from the near-death (for the upteen time) he becomes chaotic evil and his healing becomes suffering instead. Just as the party needs him to heal them shit hits the fan he's healing causes their deaths. Okay maybe having his head bashed against the wall too many times is a bad idea for the party in the end.

Of the three versions of the Willow Maiden, one ends in the Maiden's death when the suitor gets possessive and refuses to listen to her pleas, another ends in an amicable understanding, and the last ends with the suitor casting off the burdens of man to live amongst the leaves, all for his fair haired maiden. The first ending seems the most popular version, but all three speak a lesson rather than a story, and I think that's why I'm in love with Celtic lore, it's not all just legends and superstition, there are many teachings as well. Boy, this was long, my apologies, I didn't mean to ramble lol

Honestly, if I were to be your DM and you spotted fairies of some sort, you'd better have that reaction.

@@GBS4893 Nothing is more terrifying than a pack of small, flying, malicious, and hateful fey with magic to enable their "tricks"... I would rather face dragons. One of my campaigns had a tribe of fairies with high stealth (high for fairies, think ninja F-ing fairies...) and a burning hatred for "giantfolk". Their forest was criss crossed with ravines and small rivers. This necessitated a lot of climbing, rope work, bridges etc. The little flying shits kept cutting ropes, lighting wood bridges on fire, and rolling rocks down on us while we were climbing. Worst adventure ever....

longbows should never be carried strung, they were kept unstrung in waxed leather to protect them from water/moisture/damage

Imagine in a game or something having to string your bow during a battle. Never knew that, pretty interesting

@@bigprojects2560 late reply but a readiness system would work pretty well, much like with modern combat when there's minimal chance of a threat, like in a city or whatever, you've got it in its nice pouch and stuff travelling you might have it strung but on your back, if its raining possibly put something over it like a blanket at night, whoever on watch strings there bow, but once you go back to sleep your unstringing it and in dangerous environments your just carrying it ready

Once you get the muscle memory, you can string it pretty fast.

Isn't that specific to a campaign setting though? Where, at least under any normal circumstance, you'd have a 30 minute headsup before a battle? (would also help explain why ambushes were so effective)

I'm writing something sort-of like that, but with it being a parody of video game characters. The backpack will be worn by the parody of Link from The Legend of Zelda.

Electricity is real life's "magic," yet so few nerds are willing to become electrical engineers, which are basically reality's wizards, and a trade school is like Hogwarts except they actually have their shit together. My brother is an electrical engineer, and he spent a day in the garage tinkering with an RC car, and now it follows him when he calls to it. Can't pathfind at all, but it can drive a straight line to his voice, lol. Now, that seems like magic to me!

@@Gottaculat Magic is only not understanding what is happening. A lighter would be magic in past times, while knowing the upcoming weather by a slight breeze or a view to the sky is magic to us modern device junkies. From that perspective, there is nothing like paranormal in the world, its just the lack of knowledge that leads us to believe we know what is normal. The RC car for example, if upgraded with sensors, and fuzzy logic that allows more than yes and no, it will come the fastest way possible. Thats what you need programming skills for, which is essentially writing a spell.

@@tristanellis-mascoll1171 Yep. My point was so many people wish magic was real, saying they'd become wizards, and I'm sitting here saying they wouldn't become wizards even if magic were real. Electric is the closest thing we have to magic, and like magic, it is very dangerous if you don't devote yourself to study and master it. Electrical engineering is available to learn, but not many people bother to learn it, ergo if magic were a thing, I posit that few would bother to learn it as well. Everyone wants the power that comes from hard work, but few want it bad enough to endure the work required.

@@Gottaculat And yet many sit at home watching our discussion, and dont realize this is magic in its purest form. Like the "message" spell in D&D... I wish I could learn more, but earning a living gives quite some restrictions on your overall time.
