My philosophy has always been to record flat and dry as possible. For everything: Vocals of course, but even for guitars, having a dry DI track has saved me more than once when a guitarist changes their mind about their effects treatment.

How do you feel about a light compression on the way in? That and a good mic and pre are my typical move at the moment.

I think I see the logic in this. Is it an attempt to prevent distortion like clipping in case the vocalist goes "overboard" or if they soft whisper some parts?

A little compression on the way in is really common, just enough to reign in the loudest and quietest parts.

Yeah that's what I immediately thought when the video started. You got to.

When I was starting, as a vocalist, I was blocked and out of tune unless reverb was put on in my headphones. I do not know if it was recorded with reverb, but I think not. Perhaps there were two channels, and reverb on one od them. Regards, Marek, Poland.

What about running vocals through compression (1176)?

Get the source and mic right, and you're about 90% there. Then small correction edits only. If it's live, there's a whole lot of other things you have to face too.

AC hum comes up so often that I'm pretty sure they need to move to a cooler area...
