Product Review HO Athearn SD45T-2 SSW - SP Tunnel Motor!
EMD's SD40T-2 and SD45T-2 diesel locomotives were built starting in the early 1970s. The SD45T-2 was an more powerful version of EMD's SD40T-2 tunnel motor design. It had a six-axle C-C configuration and produced 3600 horsepower.
Some SD45T-2 locomotives are still in service today.
Tunnel motors were designed to draw in cooler air from lower down on the locomotive body to deal with the confined spaces of the snowsheds and tunnels on SP's Donner Pass line.
Southern Pacific, Cotton Belt and Denver & Rio Grande Western were the only railroads to purchase the 3000 horsepower SD40T-2 new from EMD.
Southern Pacific and Cotton Belt were the only original purchasers of SD45T-2 locomotives. The model in this review, 9269, represents a unit delivered to the SSW in 1973.
After the Union Pacific merger in 1996, many tunnel motors went to work for other railroads. This unit ended up on the Bessemer & Lake Erie.
This model train runs well and is loaded with detail.
As usual, after the unboxing, Dan evaluates the model’s packaging, prototype accuracy, paint & detail, and how well it operates and conforms to applicable standards.
If you're a fan of the Southern Pacific, Cotton Belt, Electro-Motive diesels, or just like trains in general, be sure to check out this review!
