Yes to the sounds thing! You mentioned that some have it with food, and I definitely do. If someone eats with their mouth open/eats noisily, I literally CANNOT focus on anything else & it creates such anger in me (not just in a like “oh they annoy me with their poor manners”) but like it actually causes a physical reaction in me. I also notice it sometimes with some very subtle noises when I focus in on them… and then I can’t not stop hearing it (a clock ticking, for example.) You’re not alone girl!!

This! If I’m next to someone loudly chewing especially if they chew with their mouth open, I will have to get up and leave. My mom would snap her gum and after like the 3rd snap I’d snap lol

Hi! I’m an occupational therapist and this sounds like it could be sensory hyposensitivity to auditory input. Every single person has thresholds for how much sensory input they can tolerate (auditory is just one category) and it can really impact you if you receive too much or too little of that sensory input. Totally normal! You can make adaptations to your environment or use strategies to minimize sounds that you know will impact you, such as ear plugs while playing tennis or white noise while sleeping to drown out louder sounds. Hope this helps!

I have misophonia (which is diagnosable in the UK at least) - mainly around repetitive noise, like breathing and eating but also normal things like if someone taps their hands or feet, scuffing feet. And I FEEL you. It’s wild the rage that it causes, but interestingly I also have diagnosed OCD… my reaction is the same. So I’m pretty sure the two are linked. People think it’s an over reaction but it’s so hard to explain to people how it makes you feel. I do find that when my OCD gets worse, so does my misophonia. You get these “calm earbuds” that filter out certain noise - not all noise - that have a certain vibration. Might be worth looking into!

Yes! I have the same reaction to some sounds, especially some loud voices. I get so irrationally angry. But I use noise “dampening” earplugs a lot and they help me so much! Especially when I know I’ll be somewhere with those sounds. They might work for you while playing tennis.

I’m SO glad you mentioned your physical reaction to noises. I have experienced this my ENTIRE life and some people genuinely don’t believe me or understand. I will have to LEAVE a room/location because of my traction.. & it will cause me not to be able to focus .. I feel you girl. I don’t have anxiety or anything related (that I know of.. so I was never sure. But last year I got diagnosed w/ ADHD so maybe it’s related to focusing.. because I do know if I’m in office and someone is doing something that causes a reaction near me, I will need to ask them to stop or I move desks)

I have anxiety and I can absolutely relate to the specific noises driving you nuts. Mine are loud chewing (since I was a kid it drove me insaaaane listening to my dad chew specifically 😆), the ticking of clocks, the fan over the stove on too loud… I’m sure there are more but those drive me crazy!! My husband thinks I’m insane LOL but it’s a real thing!!

Some people with adhd and anxiety/depression can get overstimulated by certain sounds, smells etc. It could just be related to your anxiety or triggered a bad memory of a similar sound. Depending on my mood I can even be overstimulated by the volume of some of my friends speaking.

Your realtor owes you an effin' apology and a good talking to. Period! Having to dispel rumors puts you both in a worse position than your neighbors not knowing anything. And, I am old enough to be your grandparent, so yah, it would be appreciated if you did not pre-judge folks due to their age. AIso, I would never pop on by... that's not age, thatt's just rude. could the noise sensitivity be a sensory issue related to your anxiety? that happens for me and i find that using either my noise cancelling headphones with a lofi/instrumental playlist or even just "brown noise" OR just wearing some ear plugs (i like the brand loop from amazon) really helps. Maybe that is something you could try when playing tennis, etc.

I also have misophonia (self diagnosed lol). Anyone chewing gum or any food with their mouth open will make me internally snap. Even if someone’s mouth is closed but they’re just a loud chewer, ugh. My other biggie is music. I cannot share walls anymore, I just get into an anxious spiral I can’t get out of. I’m sure therapy would help because I know it’s unreasonable, but our neighbors while I was in law school just killed my home life. I let it get so bad I basically wouldn’t walk around without noise cancelling headphones unless I had to. I hate myself for letting it take over, but I didn’t realize how bad my misophonia was until living in an old apartment building >.

I have that! It’s certain pitches. And it is really hard to focus on anything else. One example, the crinkling of a plastic bag.. something triggers such an annoyance. Loud noise really affect me… I can pin point it with certain people I am around and their volume of voices.. which isn’t there fault but I get sensitive to the sound. It is worse when it’s that time of the month. I can have two noises happening at once. So totally get it. I learned about misophonia due to a movie character that had it.

Omg, the part of the vlog where you talk about the sound at the tennis court. I have this same issue with being in the workplace! I talked to my therapist and she told me that I could be a “highly sensitive person.” The triggers and the descriptions that I’d give her, she told me to do this quiz to see if this is what it is. Turns out, I’m highly sensitive to that particular noise. Misophonia is also me when I can hear people eat. lol

I'm neurodivergent and have big sensory issues, the main one being sounds. Misophonia is common in neurodivergent people. My worst one is people eating, it makes me instantly enraged. It's not as bad if I'm at a restaurant or there is background noise. I can't even eat with my partner at home. I also become enraged when neighbours make noise which I feel is inconsiderate. I've been thinking for a while that you might be neurodivergent and often when people are burned out, their sensory sensitivities are amplified. xxx
