Great man. I grew up living inside the iit madras campus and going to the same school as Ashok uncle’s children. My dad taught in iit madras and retired in 2013. Ashok uncle and his family has been our family friend for more than 25 to 30 years, a wonderful human being who has always contributed to the growth of India. He introduced free fiber optic internet in the iit campus for all the faculty and staff quarters in 1999!!! Eventually, all the hostels in iit m got that free fiber optic internet as well by around 2001. IIT has changed a lot now when I last visited in 2017 I was both dismayed by the amount of new buildings and the deforestation that had happened since I left the campus in 2008. But our nation needs the iits capacity to be increased and this change is inevitable. I went to watch a movie at OAT (open air theater) and it brought back memories of my childhood I spent in the campus, especially the 90s.. I watched Forrest Gump, Jurassic Park, Muthu (Tamil), Baazigar, DDLJ, and so many great movies in OAT.. beautiful beautiful days !!! those days the Saturday night movie was a big thing for us. Everybody from the campus would come and watch movies. My father and Ashok sir would sometimes sit together and watch the movie in the chairs below. I would run away to the gallery section to sit with my friends and watch the movies. Beautiful days. I wish ashok uncle a happy retirement. My dad passed away in 2019. I’m pretty sure this only the end of Dr. Jhunjhunwala’s teaching tenure, but I know that he will continue to be involved in various academics and research both in iit m and elsewhere. Thank you sir !!!

Watching this video brought back a flood of emotions for me. Dr. Jhunjhunwala is not only a brilliant mind but also has a huge heart. I was fortunate to work with him in the telematics lab at IIT Madras in the late 1980s. When I received an opportunity to pursue higher studies in the US, I could barely afford the flight ticket and considered abandoning my dreams. Sensing my dilemma, Dr. Jhunjhunwala called me into his office and wrote a letter, sealing it and addressing it to a contact in the US. He instructed me to mail the letter if I ever needed financial assistance. Fortunately, I never had to mail that letter, but it gave me the confidence to move forward. To this day, I am grateful for how Dr. Jhunjhunwala supported me and countless others. Whenever I have the chance to see him, whether in India or the US, I always make a point to meet him and thank him for the immense impact he had on my life. -Mahesh

Excellent and superb speech Jhun Sir. Fresh from polytechnic, I was the 5th batch CEC, IIT M Trainee. I had the opportunity to work in his lab in the afternoon session for 2 years. He taught me all basics of intensity modulation laser communication and optical transmitter and receiver in 1986 & 1987. Later I joined in ISRO. His guidance, teaching and explaining technical things very simple to understand, till today I remember and follow his advice . Thank you very much Sir. With Thanks and Regards, Maheswari S.

I had the good fortune of a brief interaction with Prof Jhunjunwala and Prof Bhasker at IIT M. It’s really these passionate souls who work tirelessly behind the screens without the attention or seeking fame and steer the country towards prosperity that’s is built on intellectual capital. Wish we can have more such eminence woven into our social fabric.

Speechless with reverence ❤. When I was a Project Assistant in the KBCS Lab and there was a conference in Delhi in 1990 or 1991, I traveled with a couple of colleagues in the train and Prof. Jhunjhunwala was traveling with us. I hadn’t anticipated the biting cold and was clothed like I was in Madras. He saw me shivering and simply handed over his blanket. Even in this talk, everybody can see the Gandhian in him.

Sir in 1981 I lived in New Delhi. The experience you shared of the true' copy culture, scooter, gas cylinder, telephone etc etc was the experience of all of us. Even in 1986 industrialists were camping in Udyog Bhavan begging for permission or licence for their expansion proposals against heavy demands , which was never given or given against heavy suit cases only. Anyways, thank you.

An inspirational life journey, creating life for many who were let down. I got a previlage to work under this great man for 7 years(1991-1997). I was a diploma holder, and was laying multi layer PCB. I very fondly remember Ashok Jhunjhunwala. I met him first time in 1975 at University of Maine when we both joined the graduate program over there. I was in mechanical and he was in electrical engineering. At that time I didn't know the ABC of computer programming so he helped me a lot. He was a remarkable and a brilliant student who was always getting A's without spending much time in his studies. To save money and to enjoy the Indian food, in the second year three of us (third person was Raj Singh a undergrad of IIT Kanpur)rented a three bedroom trailer and lived together for a year. We really enjoyed our time at University of Maine. Later Ashok moved to University of Washington to pursue PhD in electrical engineering and I moved on to pursue my career in mechanical engineering. I am also retired now. I wish Ashok all the best in his retirement life, a well earned retirement I would say. Sarvesh Agrawal USA 🤠

I would like to thank youtube for getting me an opportunity to see this video. I am from 9th batch of CEC trainee. We used to compete to get opportunity to work in his projects. I did not get. Probably that must be the reason to have some sort of negative image about him. This talk showed me what a great soul he is. Later on, my career went into power plant instrumenation. I often wonder why I am not seeing an Indian telecommunications product in PLCC. I knew that Dr Ashok was doing some path breaking projects in communication field. After seeing this video only I understood that business decides everything. When our Honourable Prime Minister coined 'Make in India' and it was made compulsory to have make in india component in goverment purchases,I was thinking that this would block getting us high technology products. Unless we make our policies strict, we will not put efforts to make our own products. We have to bite the bullet to have our own technology products. Thank you Dr. Ashok, Dr Kumaravel for creating good number of Technocrats who are contributing in various capacities in our nation building in a silent way.

I was working in Chennai from 1991-94 as a freshly minted E&C Engineer working for a company which sold IC chips, multibus products, Data acquisition systems, etc. I was interested in the application of technology in solving practical problems in rural areas and a friend of mine Sangameshwar who studied in IIT introduced me to Prof. Jhunjhunwala. I remember attending a meeting he had organised where a Mr. Rao from Andhra Pradesh shared the wonderful work he was doing in rural Andhra. I unfortunately had to leave Chennai in 1994 and shifted to Mumbai and lost contact. He was always approachable and ready to take upon problems. I was too happy to see this video and have old memories rushing back. He may not remember me but he has played an important role in shaping my interest to work in rural areas trying to make lives better there.
