Plasmas - ionized gases - seem to have almost unlimited applications. Plasmas are used for materials processing, for cleaning water, for making lighting sources - and now, to manipulate electromagnetic waves.
Using a small forest of plasmas, Prof. Mark Cappelli of Stanford University, demonstrates how electromagnetic waves can be turned on, off and redirected by leveraging unique properties of plasmas to interact with electric fields. Prof. Cappelli discusses how to make the microwave equivalent of a photonic crystal.
