Its not a stereotype, its a work standard. Just imagine being falsely convicted or armed robbery and your freedom is on the line, and then the "lawyer" you are assigned to walks in with a massive bright yellow afro and tells you he is the guy who is going to represent you. Even if he is good at his job, the bright yellow afro is just going to encourage you to replace him immediately. Or imagine a salesman with a mullet hairstyle. Or a school teacher with pigtails. Hairstyles always convey a message just like you choice of clothing does, which is why you can never wear any random hairstyle to certain work environments. Same goes for facial hairstyles as well.

As tired as this argument is, it makes sense. That being said, there isn't really a static list of criteria that must be fulfilled for a hairstyle to be considered "professional". So it depends on the situation.

I work in corporate banking and decided to grow my hair out while I was working from home during the pandemic. I was struggling with the decision to keep my hair when the company announced that we were returning to the office and I was getting really anxious about it. It was your video that helped me make the decision to keep my hair and there was absolutely no issue when I returned. As you can imagine, there are not many black men in banking and I’ve always felt that I had to prove myself or conform in a rather conservative working environment. My hairstyle is similar to yours in this video and this is the only video I found that speaks to black men and natural hair. We need more conversations like this. “It’s time!” Thank you!

I had dreads on the top of my head and the woman who did them for me didn’t speak good English so she couldn’t teach me how to properly care for them. I tried to look online for guidance but ultimately ended up cutting them off because when it was time for my first wash, my scalp was in really bad shape and I had to cut my dreads😕 I was devastated because this was probably the first time in my life where I found a hairstyle that made me feel really sexy and it just didn’t work out. I found a more affordable woman who does dreads, locs, and braids and she is from here in Texas so there won’t be a language barrier. I hope this works out because I really want to express myself with a good hairstyle😊I also have my job lined up after I graduate college this December and they just want me to look presentable. First, I just want to say I like your accent. Where is that accent from? Are you from Haity? Anyway, to get back to the topic, I think all this stuff is in Black men's head. If they are insuecure with their hair others with sense it. I have always had long hair and used to having it in braids, twists, or loose. I have never had an issue working in corporate London, UK, because I've always been confident of who I am, very proud of my African culture and never tried to fit in or gain acceptance to the detriment of my culture. Besides, my ancestors used to have long hair for spiritual reasons. Sometimes they used to keep it in locks, especially the kings and warrior class. Therefore, stuff that! I'm not going to hide my heritage to appease others just because they feel uncomfortable about an important part of my culture. That is their problem, not mine. With this mind set, instilled in me since childhood by my parents, I have never ever had problems working in the corporate sector previously (now I work for myself). I think I had only had one small issue many years ago when I went to an interview for an important managerial position. The interviewer (a white man) said my hair is too long and if I would consider cutting it off if I get the job. Mind your, my hair was in a neat pony tail at the time. My response was: "Never! My hair is part of me and as you can see, it is in a pony tail." I told him with such pride and assertiveness and set the foundation then and there irrespective of whether I get the job or not. Few days later, I received an email confirming that I've got the job. I worked there for 15 years and never had any issues. If you are confident in yourself and love your heritage, this will show, and others would not dare pass negative comments about your hair. If you are insecure however, you will do all manners of things to try to appease others. In my view, most Black men in the corporate world are insecure about their hair hence whey they cut it off every week. In all the places I have ever worked where there are other Black men, I was the only one with long hair. Some White and Asian men came to work with long hair and in pony tails and no one said anything. So why are Black men cutting off their hair? It is weakness and lack of pride. If I'm ever going to cut my hair, it is because I want to not because other's are uncomfortable with it. Interestingly enough, I am more likely to be told by Black people to cut my hair. Of course I don't take their opinions seriously especially the Black men, because all of them are bald headed or have their hair short. They are the type that frequent the barbar every week to have their hair cut because they are ashamed of their hair. Why would I take the opinions of self haters seriously?
@Dre_La_Mont
2 жыл бұрын
Hey Tam, thank you for your response and sharing your experience. See in America it’s a different experience black men here aren’t just “insecure” prejudices are already set up against men of color due to the country’s history in slavery. You mentioned it you understand your heritage and history but for many people of color here in America that part of them was erased and in order to just get a job you had to cut your hair or code switch in language. It’s not about acceptance it’s more about this is our country too and my hair is apart of who I am it doesn’t make us thugs, incompetent nor is it distracting from the fact that I can do this job. I’m not sure how it was growing up as a person of color on the UK. But I’m America it’s a different experience. You’re absolutely correct about wearing confidence and being confident but here you can still get opportunities taking away because of prejudices. So I recommend don’t conform but apply to places that would accept you as you, also speak up, like you did depending on people’s circumstance and where they are in the country a good job can change their lives so some feel like they must cut there hair. And I understand why but it’s more about embracing who we are as men of color and individuals because like you said some white men can come in without a worry it’s because everything in this country is built for them to succeed but it’s the opposite for people of color and women. Also I’m African American I wish I could tell you where I’m from but I have no idea my African ancestry was erased so I’m a black American. And I’m from Connecticut! I hope you have a wonderful day and don’t forget to subscribe! Jesus loves you bro 💯

Send me a photo of your hair on Instagram, if you’re not black your hair isn’t blacks you may just have a matted hair texture, also there are similar styles you can do that won’t offend people from a different culture, but I know high top fade with two braids is pretty universal. Also a nice curly fro. Let me see your hair and I can potentially help.

Your hair only matters when you don’t know your shot and cannot perform your job duties.

Yes however a lot of the looks could suit you what’s your facial structure? If it’s round the cornrows may suit you or even as low top fade?

@@Dre_La_Mont it's that what I try to figure out. I'm trying to know my facial structure to get haircut based on it
