I didn't even finish the video yet, but I have o say... It was so HONEST. So many tuts about posing consists of a few points presented in a cinematic way. When you try them yourself you're like whatever, it's not for me, or "let's go back behind the camera where I belong". It's very encouraging to see you struggle with it too, being a great photographers at the same time. One of your best videos so far imo. Thanks!

It's knowing what frame do the best for your face. Imagine, if you have a flat face view from the front and you don't like it, maybe you can try do 3/4 so you can gain some depth. Knowing your angle is like you are already took various views of your face or body so you know what works for you. Imagine some people look boss all framed with feets and some need only an american frame - slight below your thighs - to have the same heavy presence as the other guy. Usually tall people look better all framed while short people look better with feet and shins cropped. Your haircut (mainly if you are a guy) for instance, because of the motion of the hair grow, sometimes look better (in your perspective) from the left or the right. Knowing all of these spares a lot of time and "bad photos" on the shooting.
@seekinghappy

I'd say take a million selfies on your own so you see how your face appears in different types of shots. Or make faces at yourself in the mirror for a long time, checking out what looks good and what doesn't. Try to recreate pictures and poses you like if you need an objective to get you started. It's so that you can make a good guess as to what your face will photograph like without seeing through the lense of the camera, because you've done that shot before and you're familiar with it.

So, I hate the left side of my face and I look like a sausage from down below my chin (looking up at me) LOL
@healthinsurance1018
3 жыл бұрын
Starting with your face, take a ton of selfies from every possible angle. Straight on, face slightly turned, a lot turned, profile, shoot up from below, shoot down from up high. You will see what looks best and what looks just okay. For example, my nose is not centered on my face. A straight on pic makes it very obvious. All of my face portraits are with my face at a slight angle. My right profile gives me a more angular jaw while my left profile looks chubbier. I take hundreds of pics and delete a LOT. Just experiment :)

I did an amateur photo session with my niece as a model. She’s nine years old so not a pro, and I’m not a pro photographer. I wish I had watched that video first so I could give her advices. The tip about fluid movements between poses was something I noticed during the session too. All my best pictures were about movements my niece made between poses, without thinking. My most common sentence was “to back to the movement you just did”.

Thanks for making this video! There were some poses that seemed a bit "wierd" as Kyra describes them (especially from the youtube vid camera angle) made pretty good photos. So the moral here is to never discount poses that would be off in real life but can possibly make good photo compositions - and actually add a personality and feeling to the image.

Educational and entertaining! Well-edited. Nice job diving in and growing your model skills. The models gave great advice and I like that it got a bit quirky and experimental. Another idea I have as an experiment is to try embracing awkward moments, like if something feels awkward could be interesting to lean into it and purposely go in that awkward mood direction. What brings that to mind is I've been to so many ecstatic dances and they're about just letting the feelings and body (and music) lead without caring how it looks - "dance ugly" - and it's so freeing and expressive that it actually ends up looking creative and beautiful. I know that's about authenticity instead of the acting and visual awareness of photography modeling so may not be relevant, but it comes to mind as a possible fun and useful experiment.
