If you are offsetting your blocks nail through the side of the boards not toenail them, run all your floor joyces then come back and do your blocks, it will go smoother for you, you will be able to get a groove going and make more progress, just a idea that works to get it done

@DIY_or_DIE also, I have used the same nailer and was really excited about it as well, and I like you, was unimpressed with actual usage. What I found to be the best for this nailer is setting 2 and multi nail. Even that gave me issues from time to time. Ugh! Technology! It's supposed to be better, but sometimes it's not. Mistakes are painful sometimes, I'm worj through some if my own currently so I totally understand. You will get through it. Keep up the great work

Oh hey, I forgot, you can just Sawzall through those nails in your spacer boards instead of ruining the board each time a mistake is made. Been there too. Sorry buddy. You got this though

Gonna help you out with 16 on center.. from the outside edge of your first stud / joist measure to 15-3/4 inches forget about the 16 on center marks on the tape measure as your laying out your floor or wall and make every mark 3/4 of an inch short of the 16 on center example second stud mark at 15 3/4 inches third stud mark at 31 3/4 inches and on and on now if your not sure go back and now check your marks using the 16 on center on the tape if you hook the outside edge of the first stud you’ll find every stud lands on 16 I hope that makes sense it’s very easy

Very good explanation! Easy to understand. Unfortunately, in this case It was a case of me being sick and doing the math quickly at night and rushing it instead of taking my time and double checking to make sure I had it right.

Where you have access to nail through the side of the joist, you should. Toenailing is not as strong. Probably no big deal since you're just nailing blocking.
@DIY_or_DIE
8 ай бұрын
Thanks for the tip! Toenailing is actually very structurally sound and can be stronger than a face nail because it involves to nails driven at opposing 45 angles which locks the board in place. Face nailing is easier for sure, but both are fine for code as long as correct nails are used.

I bought a Milwaukee battery framing nailer last year for framing my small cabin, and it works well. 3 nails per second and I can work all day with the battery that came with it. Only down side is it was very expensive but I'd buy it again. I'm jealous you get to keep working. I will have to wait until May before the snow is gone here in Canada. I always have to plane down some of the joists. Lumber is never perfect

Oh man, IDK how you do it in Canada...that is a rough winter! Good to know that Milwaukee works out good for you.
@RobertJLessard

The winter is when I work more to make money to pay for the building supplies. When I was a kid we used to get 6ft of snow each winter, now maybe only 1ft. Im not a Milwaukee guy it's my only tool from them but it's awesome. I know a small compressor and air gun is probably better but I have no electricity in the woods yet.

However, we want to be careful not to sacrifice content quality just to make them 5 or 10 mins longer. It would be helpful if y'all tell us, what exactly do you want to see more of? We have also gotten feedback that we spend too much time talking 😆

Some tips. The nails matter, don’t buy the Dewalt nails. I’m using the same gun and the nails from Lowes with the single plastic strip is key, no issues. I’m battling using duel plastic that holds the nails together, they get stuck every 5 to 10 nails… For the lumber, the bigger the size, the bigger the size difference. Lowes and home depot are so bad about this, almost every 2x10 I got for floor joists is different sizes. Also, not sure if you are using it, the construction pro app is well worth the price tag. I’m currently building my home in Texas. Cheers on building your home!

Thanks for the tips! I had two boxes of nails, one was old and one was new. When I switched to the new box it started working much better. I think the old nails maybe had a bit of corrosion or dust etc making them misfire a lot.

I also have a Dewalt Nail Gun - both framing and brad nailer. Like you (I suspect) I did Dewalt because I have a good investment in batteries/chargers for all the other Dewalt tools I have. I too had different jams and wonkiness - annoying for sure. I had to disassemble the nail head area to remove a jam on one occasion, but mostly just used screwdriver/pliers etc. However, overall, and especially after a several weeks of working with it (to build a 10 x 13 shed) it did smooth out and seemed to work better - not sure way. Maybe I was more consistent loading the nails or just smoother is using it?. I don't know if my experience (and yours) is normal for nail guns in general or if Dewalt is a lessor quality model. On other channels, some swear by Milwaukee - but who knows. The framing nailer had a few jams as well - but not as bad. Looking forward to reading comments on this :)

Suggestion for the first 16 inch issue you have on the first Joyce. Cant you just nail a 1 x 6 on the top of the Rim Joyce that way your 16" on center will be backed up to the end and give you something to nail to and allow your premarked lines on the decking line up.

You guys are doing a great job. We all go through similar problems with our nail guns, pneumatic or electric. They all jam at one time or another. The more you use it the more familiar you’ll become with that certain brand. Looking forward to seeing the progress..

To correct your first mistake you could just add a 1x12 to the first joist to make up for the 3/4” that you are off. This should center all your other joists.
