PROGSONIC SESSIONS- Between The Beats
Hello and welcome to the Progsonic Sessions family!
We are so happy and excited to have you on board and really looking forward to your feature!
Is there a key, defining moment in your life when you remember the effect that electronic music had on you to the point where you knew it was something you wanted to commit to?
Well in fact I always remember when I was 13 years old and my brother in Law (6 years older than me) gave me a cassette , I guest young people must search in google what that looks like to know what I am talking about ajajaja, well that tape has Italo disco mix, very very melodic and vocals , so that catch me. I use to listen it until I get sleep during the night in my bed.
So I always say that if there had been rock & roll recorded on it, maybe today I would have a rock band.
Then when I start to go to the clubs with my friend I was the one that always say “listen this track, listen this other , guau “ and I was standing near the dj bouth watching everything while my friends were running girls. And if we add that at 14 years old I was the one who played music very rudimentarily at the parties of my sister and her friends, who was 3 years older than me, I think that all of that could mark the beginning of my passion for electronic music and wanting to be a dj
What explanation can you share about what goes through your head when you're curating a set or working on the production of a track? Do you have a preconceived idea, a technique or a structure or do you like to improvise?
I'm from the vinyl era, and there was a lot of music, but not as much as now. What I mean is that editing a vinyl record comes with a high cost compared to an MP3. So, music was edited in smaller quantities comparing with today, but great quality because no record label would invest in a song if they weren't sure it was good. Therefore, there was less to choose. It was much easier to improvise by watching people on the dance floor, feeling when it was the right moment to play that song you had in mind, and knowing where it was in your record bag because you have at top 45 records to choose per night, now I go to the club with more than 300 tracks in a pen drive
Today with MP3s, there is so much music coming out every day, that it's impossible to have all that information in your head. So, when improvising, you might leave out a fantastic song, and when you get home, you think, "Why didn't I play that?" It's simply because you forgot it was there. Moreover, everything is quickly accessible on the internet nowadays, so the only way to surprise is change the music all the time. Back in the day you could play the same track in vinyl the whole month.
The conclusion is that even though I don't like it and always criticized it, nowadays when I go to play, I have with me a play list but with the freedom to constantly modify it depending on what happens that night. Otherwise, it's impossible. For example, if you ask me what I played in this set I did for you, I cannot answer you if I don’t see the playlist, . So, imagine I want to play a track of this dj set in 2 weeks, I will not remember the name of the track at all, maybe its me that I am old ajajajajaj.
it's simply impossible. That's why I usually carry a playlist that fortunately undergoes modifications because it would be very boring not to improvise. Additionally, one goes with an idea to the gig, but it's never an exact playlist as you had programmed it; there's always 4 or 5 songs left out and an others added.
When I produce the 30% of the track is improvisation and the rest is what that tracks needs.
To give you a parallelism, Imagine I am a chef, Imagine I start to cook but I don’t know what so So suddenly you realize you're not baking a roast but a cake, it's at that moment you stop improvising and start putting in the relevant ingredients to ensure it remains a cake and one of the most delicious ones. Anyway, I always cook 2 or 3 types of dishes what it means that I always produce between the 2 or 3 style of music I like (progressive, melodic tech house, and deep house). Damn, This conversation made me hungry.
If you were to give a definition of what Progressive House means to you so that your audience understands you better, how would you describe it?
Exactly that, “progressive” something that. Something that unfolds gradually, that has a crescendo, so I wouldn't advise you to listen to a progressive set starting from the middle or skipping ahead all the time. It's music to be listened to with the time it deserves. You wouldn't go to the theater and enter halfway through the performance because you probably wouldn't understand anything. Well, it's the same with progressive music. When a set is well crafted, you have to listen to it from beginning to end. I assure you, you'll .........
