Hey you could use one of those Isky cams designed for circle track 2 barrel engines where they have to make a certain amount of vacuum. Because Isky KNOWS how to get every little ounce of power out of a really restricted engine as far as camshafts go, people may say it's old hat - but then they would be running something like a Solid Roller, if it makes power its MAKES POWER - newskool or oldskool..

If you take .125” off the head or block or a combo of both that is .250” you have to take off the base circle of the cam. Besides the fact you went way thru any hardness in the cam you know also destroyed the cam ramp rates and are now side loading the heck out of the lifters which are way out of their bores and unsupported. Combine that with that likely the lifters won’t receive oil properly because of gallery misalignment and you have a recipe for disaster. So could it be done that way yeah. But it should not be done that way cuz it’s all poor practice.

There is NO WAY that engine wont hit the 300 HP mark on the Dyno with all the work done to it. The only factor that will put sand in the gears is the 2bbl flow restriction. With a 4bbl, sky is the limit. No, it's not a 340. It's a race engine. At least, very close to one at 7000RPM!

Definitely an interesting build on such an overlooked engine. Same stroke and rod length as a 340, just smaller bore. Dodge choked the 318 with a broomstick cam and “economy” heads. That’s all going to change now! Interesting idea would be to see how a 318 would respond to a six pack setup with a good stock, shall we say 68 340 4 speed cam, and those heads. Good luck guys!
@paulmetcalf4471
6 ай бұрын
Everything you mention can and has been done before. It yields about 330hp. The 318 LA motor is an easy wakeup project, I've built several. The key to the way we used to do it was 340 six pack induction system, 340 cam or purple shaft cam, 360 heads, headers, and this is the most important thing.......a custom set of pistons that allow for higher compression than stock. You just can't get there by decking the block or milling the heads. Custom pistons were and are the key. Real world HP numbers put it in the 330hp area. The 340 was factory rated at 275hp and the 340 six pack was 290hp, but these were way BELOW that they actually were. Didn't want to step on the numbers for the 383, 440 or Hemi now do we...... ;) Heck, the 1957 318 poly dual quad Fury motor was rated at 290hp and that had a relatively mild cam and heads that didn't breath as well (without work) as the standard LA wedge head, so it should have been fairly easy to reach Uncle Tony's concept power expectations of 1 HP per CI using stock components, if his concept was to mix and match different factory parts, which it was not. His vision was to ring the most out of what the motor was born with and see where you end up. I would still love to see that, unfortunately this build is not that. Maybe if and when Tony decides to do his original concept after this project is over and done with, we can see what the original vision was and what that motor will produce for hp.

Stock valvetrain. This can all be applied to Mission Impossible. Very interesting.

Hot Rod magazine had an article called “Junkyard Jewel” It was about building a 400hp 318. It had ported 302 casting heads on it too. They hit their goal with a spacer under the 4bbl. We tried to replicate it with the same heads that had been ported by a man that once raced the 318.
