In science-fiction games, the development of x-ray lasers (the ability to instantly deliver atomic bomb energies at a distance) is a game-ender.

Guaranteed that even though project excalibr was a failure, some very useful lessons about the physics of high energy lasers was learned which paved the way for some of the moderately successful laser weapons coming on to the scene now.

A good well researched video, kudos! One nit pick- The Outer Space Treaty specifically bans "Nuclear" weapons in space, but does not specifically ban conventional weapons. As an example; one of the Soviet "Salyut" type space stations (Salyut 3) was equipped with a turret mounted 23mm Cannon- and even test fired it in space.

A good point, thanks for highlighting it. Though i don't think you would even need a weapon. A solid rod metal rod dropped from orbit could still do an insane amount of damage. Kinetic energy is not your friend in that case.

Awesome video! You should put your lighting up higher looking down at an angle. Because its face on, it gives you "Mullet Shadow" if you look kinda makes you look like you have a whispy mullet, but yea putting it up a bit higher so light can angle down on you from an angle, sorta like the sun at 10am or 3pm on the equator probably stretching it as far as 9am and 4pm as seen from the equator.

It never was tested in space. It's just too impractical and focusing x- rays is a nightmare. Add for the books, that sound pretty cool, though the x- rays wouldn't get through our atmosphere very well.

The main problem is with the focusing. They just couldn't properly aim the thing. Also it would be easy for an enemy to take out. But there still might be uses for it.

@@AlmostaDoctor1 The honorverse books used gravity lensing to aim and focus the energy. The series is pretty interesting, but I would suggest against reading the 14 mainline books, if you have a low capacity for an author shamelessly robbing history.

Reagan's "Star Wars" program would have *never* rendered nuclear missiles obsolete. If it had worked, it could have made ICBMs less effective, but this isn't necessarily a good thing, nor would it have made anyone safer. Here are a few reasons why: 1. It would have spurred more R&D into frightful weapons like nuclear-powered cruise missiles... things like the SLAM developed in Project Pluto. AKA the flying crowbar, the missile from hell. The US never went ahead with Project Pluto because they had developed more reliable ICBMs, and they were wise enough to realise that they didn't want to spark an arms race in nuclear-powered cruise missiles that shower the area beneath their flight path in fission fragments. 2. A successful implementation of Project Excalibur may have actually _sparked_ a nuclear war. You see, the Soviets did _not_ trust the Americans' promise that if they had such a system, they'd unilaterally disarm. Rather, what the Politburo expected was that once the Americans had this system up, they'd promptly use all their nukes to glass Moscow, Leningrad, and all the administrative capitals of the Soviet Socialist Republics with zero impunity. Just because they could. So, some of the more hotheaded leaders in the Soviet Union may have been tempted to strike first _before_ the full system of satellites was in operation. Instead of preventing a nuclear war, Project Excalibur could have sparked one. 3. We'd like have seen things like the Status-6 nuclear-armed UUV developed _much_ earlier--high-yield, extremely dirty and nigh undetectable long-range underwater torpedoes for attacking coastal areas. (Most of the viable countervalue targets, and many counterforce targets in the U.S. are located along the coastlines anyway). No x-ray laser is going to stop a 100 MT nuclear torpedo. And since that nuclear torpedo doesn't need to fly, it can basically be a Tsar Bomba with a screw propeller and guidance system strapped to it. Heck, you could probably drop one off another country's coastline, to detonate whenever you wished... and they'd be none the wiser. That said, it is possible that systems like Project Excalibur are in operational status. Nobody can say for certain that they never built or deployed it, because who knows what's exactly in those satellites they launch all the time? What I do hope, however, is to never know for certain--because if the existence of a system like that becomes public knowledge, that's because it had to be used.

#1 they do try to develop this things the same way #2 this one I agree probably the only good solution would be either to develop this system as a joint effort (open source) or in high secrecy #3 This torpedos probably exist and other systems to counter them need to be in place

@@AlmostaDoctor1 The casaba howitzer is pure speculation, and as far as I can tell, there are very few reliable or authoritative sources on it... and I hope it stays that way. Because frankly, you *really* don't want to live in a world where the casaba howitzer is public knowledge, because if they ever have to use that stuff, well, you wouldn't even have a KZitem channel since there would be no more Internet. That said, it's an interesting topic, and I am eager to see what you can find on it. Good luck.

1.2nm Selenium K shell x ray laser. The laser has 24 spaghetti like rods of selenium in the radiation case reflector. When the nuke is assembled the gamma/x ray energy rips the electrons off the selenium ionizing it, the selenium rod is expanded to maybe 2mm but is plasma. As the ions cool they generate 1.2nm laser light at an energy of around 200kJ per beam. When compared to the pump energy, the beam is pathetically weak. It has divergance similar to an uncollimated helium neon laser as well so it isnt very useful as the nuke's regular pulse would swamp the beam at distances longer than a few km.
