Strange that Von Braun was more concerned about astronaut safety then NASA
@Carstuff111

Von Braun wanted more testing of Apollo hardware than we ended up getting in the end. That said, on the one hand, NASA has at times shown they would take risks with people's lives if it saved on budget, and on the other hand they had a budget that was constantly being exceeded and a government that expected results. With spaceflight, you are often damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Von Braun would happily kill people on the ground, but he was very concerned about the life of anyone who was airborne.

Ham also lived at the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro, NC from 1980 to his death in 1983.

When I was about five, maybe four we went to the National Zoo where Ham resided. Though I was completely unaware of the significances of this I did and do remember the gathering and the very relaxed chimp in the tree there in the enclosure. I have requested my sister to see if there are any pictures from then we may have. As for the story you envision Shoot for the Moon!! I will buy a copy! Peace

I imagine him in the zoo bringing up his space flight every day. The other chimps knocking him back by rolling their eyes and reminding him that it was the humans that did all the clever stuff.

I am also glad they decided against having him stuffed and put in a museum. Consider his service it would have seemed disrespectful.

Number 65 was nicknamed Ham after Holloman Aerospace Medical, not before.

From the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum: "Officially, Ham was known as No. 65 before his flight, and only renamed "Ham" upon his successful return to Earth. This was reportedly because officials did not want the bad press that would come from the death of a "named" chimpanzee if the mission were a failure."

I hate that we used animals. Don't get me wrong - I also hate groups like Peta (who lies in their propaganda and literally kills thousands of animals a year). It's absurd to say its unethical to use human test subjects when its impossible for animals to consent. Plenty of humans can and do accept very real risk of death.
